My £2 a Day Food Shopping Challenge - Day Four

Day Four Shopping - Total Cost £2.64

Going so far over my £2 was possible because there was an 87p underspend yesterday so I had £2.87 to play with.  It's good to try and have some cheaper days when you know that there's something 'expensive' that you want to buy on another day.  The eggs cost me £1.35, which would be cheap in any other scenario.

Meals

Breakfast
- 1 slice of  toast and a banana

Lunch - Egg Mayo Sandwiches, made with 3 slices of bread and 2 eggs.

Tea - Potato Wedges and Mayo

I wasn't overly hungry after my filling lunch so I just a plate of wedges with a dollop of the mayo for dunking purposes.  It was a very simple days food, but very satisfying and I enjoyed it.

Leftovers Carried Forward:

400g SR Flour

 DF Spread

Jam

375g Pasta

2 portions of Pasta Sauce

Mayo

10 slices of bread

4 Eggs

Tin of Peaches

Cash - 23p

  1. You're doing very well, I have to say. It helps that you can use the herbs/spices you have in the cupboard, as those can soon add up when you have run out and one cannister of spices might be nearly your whole budget to replace!

    1. I'm only using the things that I chose for my pantry staples though. So mixed herbs, garlic granules and chilli flakes this week.

  3. Eggs, good choice. You have everything for a Tortilla Española made of egg, potato, and onion cooked in olive oil. I steamed a few extra vegetables yesterday for a frittata with a bit of cooking bacon today. A 500g pack of bacon offcuts costs £1, and I freeze it in 100g portions.

I am freezing the surplus eggs, lightly beaten, in individual pots. The hens are going to moult and stop laying soon after the autumn equinox.

    1. Ours, except for the bantams, used to lay all through the year. Maybe a couple less per week in Winter, but we always had enough to sell until they got older and retired.

  4. Another good day-do you like French toast/ eggy bread and would that be a possibility for a hot meal? Norrie’s just told me that Octopus has put our monthly payment up by £26! Enjoy the rest of your challenge. Catriona

    1. I'm not keen on French toast/eggy bread really. Well I wasn't, it's one
of those things that's always worth trying again isn't it.🙂

  5. You seem to be eating very lightly. Are you losing weight? Nothing green in your meals. That would concern me.

    1. This is about the usual amount that I eat on a daily basis. No, I'm not losing any weight, I seem stuck at a default weight since my back injuries left me unable to exercise much, or walk any great distance. I do eat 'green things' just not every single day. My recent blood tests showed me to be in excellent health. So, no need to be concerned.
