Yet Another Shopping Trip ... and More to Come?

I went shopping to Booths on Wednesday, I waited until then as I knew there was another freebie to pick up.

Since I was on my own I decided to buy Alan's 'Easter egg'.  As you can see it's not actually a chocolate egg at all as he is trying to avoid chocolate at the moment, so I got him a bottle of Port.  I also treated myself to some Easter goodies, a couple more little cans of spritzer and six of my favourite chocolate bars as they were on special offer.

On the way in I spotted a trolley full of yellow stickered Hot Cross buns, so I chose us these apple and cinnamon ones, they were delicious and did us both for two breakfasts.

I've just been trying the free carton of juice and I doubt I would give this to any of the children in my family, looking at the ingredients list although at first glance they seem fine, looking into the erythritol it says:

  • Other Side Effects: Some people may experience bloatingnausea, and loose stools when consuming erythritol.

and considering that this is only one of the many artificial sweetening sources, as well as the naturally occurring ones, I think I'd rather give them a small glass of orange juice.  It's also left a very strange taste in my mouth, but that's probably because I rarely have things with artificial sweeteners in these days.

The items crossed off went in the Foodbank trolley.

I tend not to buy much for the Foodbank from Booths as the prices are usually more expensive there, and I like to get as much as possible for my money so that it helps as many people as possible, but when I see a good deal on something I will buy it for the trolley.

An Easter breakfast, a hot cross bun and a nice cup of coffee.

I forgot to turn the toaster down and it browned it a bit much for my liking, but it was just on the right side of being too well done.  My son used to tease me about eating 'hot bread' rather than toast as I like it so pale.  πŸ˜„

So I've now spent most of my budget for this month, in fact I think I have only about £15 left in my purse.  But as Alan is going shopping later today, I might go with him and see if the reduced priced vegetables are in our Aldi.  It would be worth a little spend to get some more veggies in as I have just turned a lot of what was left in the fridge into a panful of roasted vegetable soup.

Have you made use of the reduced priced vegetables that most of the supermarkets seem to be offering here in the UK?

  1. I have Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda, Lidl and Aldi all within a mile of each other so I tottered into each one and spent about £4.00. I have 3 broccoli heads, 2 bags carrots, 1 red cabbage, 2 bags potatoes, 12 onions, 3 heads of garlic, 2 bags parsnips, 2 bags of shallots, 2 bunches of spring onions and 2 packets of green beans which I thought was a bargain. What I don't use this weekend will be frozen except for the potatoes. x

  2. I love apple & cinnamon hot cross buns - well, most of the flavours actually - but they're just too moreish! Not bought any of the reduced veggies as I don't need them, I already have a load of veggies I've cooked and processed in the freezer.

  3. I like "regular" HCBs best. None of this faffing about with cinnamon, and blueberries and caramel etc!! And leftovers go into puddings

    1. Yes, I usually only buy the traditional ones, but they had none without milk added in, so I got these. They were very tasty though. πŸ™‚

  4. I am sitting here reading your blog and the little world counter on the right side bar says someone in France is also reading it. Isn't technology amazing?

I just went to Aldi, our lower price supermarket. Still costs a bundle, but, hey, I am not complaining. I got Walnuts and Almonds for half the price of other grocery stores. It pays to shop around.

    1. It's fascinating watching that globe, and sometimes I click on my stats to see how many countries folk are reading from over the course of a day, also fascinating. πŸ˜€

Nuts are usually pretty good value at Aldi aren't they.

  5. DH makes a good spiced bun loaf in the bread maker which is less faff than making hot cross buns. I like it with homemade marmalade. It is good toasted too, in place of tea cakes.

    1. That's a brilliant idea. I have seen the 'teacake loaves' in the shops too, it would be much easier to fish a slice out of my toaster than an actual teacake, and yes they are delicious with homemade marmalade aren't they. :-)

  7. Sourdough hot cross buns πŸ˜‹ once I had tasted them there was no going back to supermarket ones. It's a win win. Because they are harder to find, and more expensive, I eat less of them and savour every mouthful.

    1. I must be a really strange one, but I really don't like sourdough at all. I've tried the bread, the buns and even the sourdough crumpets and I just can't get on with it. I bet I'm in a real minority!

  8. Forget hot cross buns, it's the port I'm eyeing up!
This week's Lidl Waste Not box contained 2 lamb's lettuces, a pomegranate, a white cabbage, a cauliflower, 5 bananas, 2 mangos, 6 apples, a pineapple, an aubergine and 6 peppers - not bad for £1.50! xxx

    1. Alan says 'hand's off it's mine' ... he's lucky I don't really like Port so he gets to drink it all himself. That was yet another good box, you seem to do well with them. Hope you have a lovely Easter. xx

  9. I took advantage of Tesco reduced veg the other day, spuds and a swede at 15p each. Curious about the brand of chocolate bar you like, no matter what we try we always end up back with Cadbury πŸ˜€
The port is a nice gift - gorgeous stuff

    1. I like a lot of the dairy free chocolates, my absolute favourite at the moment is the Aldi 'Blonde' or these Rhythm 108 bars. The 'blonde' is delicious, sort of a mixture in taste between white chocolate and the old Caramac. I used to LOVE Cadbury's Dairy Milk.

    1. I know ... the supermarket war for our Easter spend has triggered all this. Easter is being turned into a second Christmas spendathon for a lot of people. Mum is home and after a scary first day is slowly getting back to normal.

  11. I cannot believe the price of your waste not boxes! Here in New Zealand our fruit & veg prices are through the roof. Thank goodness I have a garden as that kept me out of the grocery stores a lot this summer.

    1. Sadly none of our local shops do them, but some other bloggers and YouTubers that I follow get some great To Good To Go Bags or veg boxes. Vix from Vintage Vixen gets an almost weekly brilliant fruit and veg box from her local Lidl ... I'm not jealous honest. ;-)

  12. Boothes in Keswick is unbelievably expensive but we have no other supermarket other than a small coop, I've never found a bargain in their store. We have to travel about 15 mile for an Aldi or Lidl it's infuriating, Jill x

    1. I've not been to that branch for years, but I have found over the last couple of years there are more offers available. There are the freebies if you have a Booths card and lots of yellow stickered items on a regular basis, especially on Monday mornings. Of course Keswick is much more touristy than where I live so you do have to cope with higher prices. ☹️
