I picked up a few more books the day we were in Morecambe, three of them from the
Farplace Animal Rescue charity shop and one from the charity book table in Morrisons. It seems that virtually all supermarkets are doing this here in the North West ... a dangerous thing for me. 😄.
Do they do it where you live?
The animal charity shop is a good old fashioned one with things in boxes, shelves stocked occasionally very haphazardly and with lots of treasures to find if you have the time for a rummage. Suky used to love having a browse in there with me while Mavis and Alan walked further along the prom than her little legs would take her. She was always fascinated with the boxes of balls of wool for some reason.
Anyway four more books for my collection, luckily I have my reading mojo back at the moment.
I have been making a point of using up all the leftovers from the end of my challenge, and yesterdays breakfast was the last two large tomatoes, fried with some home grown onion and a little garlic powder, a very tasty way to start the day.
The fridge is looking a little bit healthier than it was at the end of the challenge, well one shelf of it is. 😀
I had a picky tea last night using some of the Morrisons mixed salads pack that I had, and a couple of little samosas added in to pad it out a little bit.
And then I used the last two eggs for this mornings breakfast, scrambled on toast. It is very satisfying this using everything up. As I am obviously already overspending this month, I think I might have a mini challenge again towards the end of the month and use things from the freezer this time.
I really want to have freezer space to buy lots of packs of frozen vegetables as there are rumours that the price of nearly all vegetables will be shooting up in the near future. Do I believe them, I don't really know, but thinking about the weather we have had this year there is every chance it could be true!
Quite possibly ... but I'll do my best to combine the two. 😁

I love the look of your picky tea - that is just the sort of plate I enjoy.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to sit and eat a mixed bowl of things when you're watching something on the tv isn't it. It was very tasty. :-)
DeleteI've started buying frozen veg too, at the moment it's very reasonably priced. Already there does seem to have been a price hike in fresh veg, for example broccoli - not much change from a pound for that, even in Aldi.
ReplyDeleteTomatoes on toast, tasty and healthy.

I would definitely like to have at least one of the drawers bursting at the seams with frozen veg, if not two.
DeletePicky tea/lunch is a favourite of mine. The new book case has 1.5 empty shelves-yeah! Catriona
ReplyDeleteOooh, the potential for filling those shelves is great. :-)
DeleteI heard that also about the heat and bad weather causing vegetables and fruit to be higher in the US. Who knows what to believe.
ReplyDeleteWell my own experience at home is that it has been a terrible year for all my vegetables. Around us the farmers are getting good hay harvests, as the ground after being flooded is now parched, but I have no idea of the vegetable and fruit harvests in England this year. Time will tell, but it might be wise to be slightly prepared.
DeleteWell, I can certainly relate to that last bit about the books! I have an entire bookshelf (and there are other books scattered here and there) that I have yet to get too - but I will eventually and I like to know they are there. The issue these days is that I put books on hold at the library and then they all tend to arrive at once and have to go to the front of the line - must learn to restrain myself a bit more!
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you about the veg. I intend to buy a small freezer before the end of the month (live in a very small apt.) and I'll be happy if it just contains fruit, veg, butter, pastry and a few prepared meals.
Someone likened our book stashes to a wine cellar ... just because you've got all the wine you don't drink it all straight away do you. Just because we have all our books there is no need to read them all in any sort of urgency.
DeleteI'll never have a wine cellar though, that would be dangerous ... hic!! I'll stick with books. 😄
Yes, most of our local supermarkets have a book table (but not lidl or sainsbury's where I do most of my shopping) I conscientiously avoid them
ReplyDeleteHaha ... perhaps I should too. 😄
DeleteI like that bit about buying books and reading them being two different hobbies! I have stopped buying books and will only borrow from the library, now.
ReplyDeleteI think vegetable prices (and food prices in general) will continue to increase, due to the weather, increased cost of fuel to transport them, rising fertilizer prices, etc. I'm growing at least some of my vegetables, but, I don't save anything by doing that, because I pay very high prices for the water needed to water them.
I haven't borrowed from the library in years, I have too much trouble handing the books back. 😄
DeleteGrowing just a few things ourselves really helps doesn't it.
No book tables in our local supermarkets as yet. Our prices are so high here and sadly it isn't the farmers who are making any profits:( I've just order another 2 more books:) The Jane Austen Diet book and Jane Austen's table: Recipes, fingers crossed they live up to the reviews.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't be as bad if it were the farmers getting a fair profit would it. Those books sound interesting. 🙂
DeleteYes, our Morrisons does. They also have one with children's books. I think it's nice. xx
ReplyDeleteYes, our Booths has a children table upstairs in the café alongside all the colouring pencils and paper, which I think is a brilliant idea.
DeleteI adore Kate Morton- that one there is a gem of a book. My daughters read the Girl of Ink and Stars and loved it, I recognise the cover.
ReplyDeleteI need to do a freezer-use-it-ups. I’m not a huge user of frozen veg, I buy frozen berries,
Mixed and blue but I’m pondering now why I’ve never really gone in for frozen veg? Apart from our own grown stuff, I’ve frozen plenty of that over the years but this year life has been incredibly difficult and my vegetable garden is a depressing abandoned state which makes me sad and frustrated. One can’t ‘do it all’ I say to myself but then wonder back to the war years where people had just as much on their plates but still managed to tend vital vegetable patches.
Danette xx
No, we certainly can't do it all, but we all do the best we can when we can, and should always remember that. The weather been against us vegetable growers this year, I think we've all battled one way or another. ☹️
DeleteI'm looking forward to reading my books, but Kate Morton's is a big one isn't it. 😄
It’s great that you’re back into your reading groove and have found some more treasures at charity shops. The charity book tables in supermarkets are becoming quite common here as well, and they’re definitely a tempting find!
ReplyDeleteUsing up leftovers and organizing your fridge sounds like a rewarding endeavor. Your breakfast and picky tea both sound delicious and resourceful. Good luck with your potential mini challenge and freezer organization—being prepared for possible price increases is always a smart move.
I just posted a new blog post at http://www.melodyjacob.com, and I invite you to read and let me know what you think about it. Thank you!
I think it's a brilliant idea raising money for charity with book tables, but it's far too tempting isn't it. I can never pass by without looking, you never know when there might be a real treasure waiting to be discovered. 😄
