Shopping, Lemons, Marbles

I called to Sainsbury's as that's where our nearest cash point is, to get this month's £100 out of my bank account. So while I was there I went in for a couple of lemons as I was down to my last slice in the freezer.  I also got followed out by a cucumber and a pack of tomatoes which were reduced as I have a Nectar card.

So my first shop of May cost me:

Lemons 2x30p = 60p

Cucumber - 89p

Tomatoes - £1.60

Total Spend £3.09

Considering this was going to be a no spend week, I'm not doing that well.  But I'm not going without my morning hot water with lemon slice drink for anyone ... not even a self imposed shopping ban. 🍋

  1. Morning Sue - just wondering if it is just that you like the taste of the lemon in water or does it also have health benefits?

    1. It's supposed to have lots of health benefits, but it also stops me drinking far too much coffee if I start a bit later. It does curb your appetite a bit too and stops you wanting to start the day with something sweet to eat.

    2. Thanks - that makes sense!

  2. I wish I could drink water with lemon first thing but my stomach rebels. I start with plain water and like you, try to cut the coffee where I can. Catriona

    1. You really have to do what's best for yourself don't you. A few years ago I don't think I could have done this either.

  3. I start the tea with a cup of tea. Trying very hard not to spend much - visits to dentist and podiatrist this week mean that for the next six months, half my pension will be going on essential foot&mouth bills. This is a little disheartening to say the least!

    1. I've not been able to drink tea since I was thirteen ... far too many years ago to count. It makes me really unwell. It's sad that 'foot and mouth' is ravaging your house. ;-) It's very disheartening to have to spend so much money on basic upkeep, but also vitally important.

  4. That's funny how that cucumber and the tomatoes followed you out of the store! :D
I went over my April grocery budget by $15.39. Not a big problem - I'll just deduct it from the May budget.

  5. I chuckled at the veggies following you out too 😄
I allow myself one decent coffee first thing then it has to be decaf........I start getting palpitations otherwise which is most unpleasant.

    1. I tried decaf, really I did. But I've come to the conclusion that my life really, really, really runs solely on caffeine. A bit like my car runs on petrol, without it my engine doesn't start, I lurch from job to job and then curl up in a comatose ball. 😄

  6. Sue, I'm really enjoying this new blog of yours - it mirrors many of my thoughts around frugal ( but rich in enjoyment ) living.
I've become more conscious of giving what I no longer need to charity shops so they can (a) raise money and (b) offer quality items cheaply.
For instance, I went through our toy farm animals and found quite a few that were duplicated.
So I made up a nice boxful and was happy to see it selling later in Oxfam for £1.

    1. Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. 🙂 So now basically all your flocks of chickens and sheep, and herds of cows and pigs number just one of each. 🤣😂

Seriously, it's a good feeling knowing that things we don't need or use anymore are going to people that do need them AND benefitting a charity at the same time isn't it.

  7. Lemons and tomatoes are very compatible. I have been known to make a great, small quantity, lemon and tomato jam from an Amish recipe. Now and then.

    1. That sounds interesting. I've never made a tomato jam, lots of chutney and sauces but never a jam. I'll have to give it a go when tomatoes are properly in season and cheaper. Thanks for the idea. 🙂

    1. It works for me anyway. I find that once I start eating sweet things I crave more, so not starting is the answer. 🙂

    2. I’m sure you’re right … I just opened a bag of Maltesers and had to scoff the lot!!

    3. Haha ... I used to be exactly the same with Maltesers. They are one of the few dairy things that I REALLY miss. A bag, a box, any amount and I would eat them in one sitting.

  9. Not really that big a spend, so I think you are still doing very, very well.

    God bless.
