Blogmas Day Five - A Little Christmas Shopping

Christmas booze from Aldi - £16.42

I decided that it was about time that I showed willing and started to get some things in for Christmas.  With Alan wanting a bacon bun for his breakfast from Booths, I went with him for a coffee ... you can't let a man eat alone ... and then we both went into Aldi, him for some shopping and me for some of their very reasonably priced alcohol.

Some bits that I needed and a little bit of Christmas shopping from Sainsbury's the next day.

I had extra Nectar offer points for the potatoes, mince pies, bananas and lemon so I definitely picked all those up.  The washing up liquid was needed and the Cranberry sauce and bake at home Pains au Chocolat are a must for Christmas Day breakfast to go with our Bucks Fizz, it's one of our few traditions.

Sainsbury's £8.31

I forgot to use my Nectar points when I got to the checkout to pay.  😞

If I am to stand any chance of getting through this month in the black I have to remember to get the majority of what I will need for Christmas with my Nectar points from now on as there is not much cash left.

Total spend this week £24.73

Cash left £ 25.19

  1. I always buy odd things if there are Nectar points on them. I'm pleased to see it's not only me who buys just 2 bananas and a single lemon 😉 😂 I'm saving my points up for the last minute shop. We're really cutting back on buying alcohol this year as our son in law is now diabetic and we don't want to tempt him. I have a single bottle of rose prossecco to go with the meal on Boxing day and a bottle of port for a tipple in the evening. He'll have to be content with that rather than guzzle beer and whisky then go to sleep! That's what got him into bad health in the first place 🙄

Your wine is very reasonably priced Sue .....

    1. Yes, I regularly go to the checkout with one onion, banana and potato and come away with nearly 200 points. 😄

I didn't get a receipt for the booze, I keep saying no by accident when they ask me in Aldi if I want one. You'd think I'd have learnt to say yes after almost a full year on this challenge!! From memory the matching bottles of Pinot were £3 something, the posher looking one is about £6.49 and the Bucks Fizz was just over £2. They are all favourites, I'm not snobby about wines, they just have to taste good. 😀

  2. The boozy photo is right up my street 😉 Aldi 's booze prices are consistently reasonable aren't they......
I've noticed that already the supermarkets are heaving with folk, as if it's Christmas Day at the weekend!

    1. They sell pretty good wine at good prices, I'm only shopping early in the mornings now, as you say it's getting pretty busy in the supermarkets already. The adverts are all doing a good job of telling people what they HAVE to have.

    1. It must be a lot of preparation and planning to have two such big annual events so close together. But I do love leftovers, so I would be in my element now. :-)

  4. When I went food shopping today with my mum I was horrified as I am over with the family for Xmas. They wanted to meet baby Sakura . How on earth do you lot eat!! I can see why she loves reductions. I mean I do as well as I have 5 kids at home.
But OMG!! Some of the biscuits and cakes one bite and gone!!! So I bought baking supplies and I making some bits for the family. I wouldn’t mind if some of the stuff even tasted nice but uggh . Sorry it doesn’t remind me of my childhood. Even the combinis in Osaka were now live have higher quality food and cheaper a dozen eggs back home are under £1!!! Yes veggies are dear but at least they aren’t mouldy like what I saw yesterday!
I just felt so depressed when I left the supermarket. I feel like you need to be a member of the Japanese royal family to afford to shop in Asda! Of all places! Sorry rant over.

    1. Please feel free to rant away, that was really interesting to read. I have noticed more and more that so much of our food is ultra processed, garishly packaged and getting more and more expensive. Although I do love food shopping ... it's the only sort of shopping that I even like ... I do get what I need and then marvel at other peoples shopping habits and choices. Still it's fascinating. I now have a vision of the Japanese royal family walking round Asda pushing a shopping trolley with their entourage close behind. :-)

Sakura ... what a beautiful name, doesn't it mean cherry blossom?

    2. That made me laugh the Japanese royal family pushing a Cart round Asda. Food in Japan is a very much loved art form that’s why a punnet of strawberries can cost sometimes £2000 I kid you not!
Yes she is named after the cherry blossoms but is our final addition.

  5. Late to the party again! I had to google "Pains au Chocolat" 😉 I've never seen Bucks Fizz ready made here like in the UK we have to make our own 🥂

    1. I used to make my own Bucks Fizz too until I saw it for sale ready made, and it works out so cheap to do it this way.
