Fishing in the Recycling Bin

When you find this in the paper recycling wheelie bin, you've just got to act haven't you ... well I did.  Alan might not have been tempted but I sure was.

To be honest I didn't know if I would be able to get the offer as it said 'new online delivery customers only', but I thought it was worth a go.  The offer is not quite as brilliant as it looks at first glance, as what you actually get is £20 off a first order over £80 and then £10 each off your next two orders over £80.  Now there's no way I would be spending that much, but I thought for the £20 off the first order I would give it a go.

My order went through with no problem and I got the discount, perhaps it was because it's been over a year since my last order, I don't really know, but anyway it worked.  😀

So here's what I got.

I went for things that I have been struggling to buy elsewhere, and some quite treaty foods, but those that are still relative healthy and as free from nasties as possible.  There's absolutely no need for me to rush into eating all these up before Christmas as everything has really good dates on.  The only thing short-dated was the Chickpea Tikka Masala, and that did come with a note telling me I could refuse it if I wanted to.

I did have a moment this morning, the day after my delivery, when I thought 'What have I done to the budget?'  But after doing the maths it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

In total this month and with only one week left of November, I have spent a grand total of £126.54,  which added to last months overspend means I am overspent on my self-imposed yearly target of £100 per month for shopping by only £50.08.

Looking at what I now have in the fridge and with the freezer now being packed to the gunnels thanks to food from Mum's and two of these pizzas (the other two I have put into Alan's freezer as I had no more space), I will definitely not be shopping next week!!

Now all I have to do is get all my December shopping for the grand total of £49.92.  😄

  2. Oh you lucky, lucky girl. Not the discount (although that is not to be sneezed at) but actually having access to a Waitrose . . . sigh.
That is one of the very rare things I still miss about where we used to live.

PS: By my logic, if you amortise that delivery over the months when you will consume it you are probably not over budget at all. Years ago I saw a blog where the lady had written the cost of all her pantry goods on the tins/packets and then noted the cost of what she actually used each week. Perhaps that might work for you occasionally?

    1. Only online at the moment as I have yet to find the actual Waitrose that is supposed to be somewhere near-ish to me. It would be lovely to shop there occasionally, I shall have to ask Little Miss Satnav for help.

That would be a brilliant idea and a great way to find out exactly how much it costs to feed myself. I remember a few years ago, when we lived in Wales, writing on the boxes of meat and fish products that I split from multi packs to freeze with the individual cost of each item.

  3. When Waitrose moved into the old Somerfield a few miles from the smallholding I went to look but decided I was too scruffy to shop there! Now the nearest is the other side of Ipswich so I've not been for years. They do have good looking products and your haul looks tasty.

    1. Oh I had no such qualms when we lived in Oxfordshire and I regularly shopped at the Waitrose in Thame. I would make sure my wellies were relatively clean and put on a clean jacket but that was about it. :-)

  4. Our nearest Waitrose is in Abergavenny (37 miles away). I go in there if I am in Abergavenny, but don't buy much, and then stuff on offer or a meal deal (as I am normally there at lunchtime). Nice to get what you can't get elsewhere and with a good £20 off.

    1. It is nice to browse the aisles of a completely different supermarket sometimes isn't it. I think I will try and make more of an effort to find all the non-local to me supermarkets next year when we retire ... I'm sure they all have cafes so I can offer it up to Alan as a morning out with a bacon butty. :-)

  5. Our nearest Waitrose is 16 miles away, we sometimes go as the market town it is in is a nice place to visit with a lot of independent shops. We always buy some things in the Waitrose but to shop their weekly would be above our normal price range. We too find they stock some items we like that we can't find in other stores so that is useful. Regards Sue H

    1. I was watching a television programme last night about M&S and it said that more and more people are doing their full weeks shop there ... oh that sounds like they have money to burn. As you quite rightly say picking and choosing a few of your favourite things from the more expensive supermarkets is a really useful thing to do. I will keep frequenting Aldi, and just do little tops ups from their dearer cousins.

  6. We get regular deliveries from Waitrose and it was £25 off if you did two orders over £100 in November. I duly did the first one only to discover that you must have your December delivery before 19th December to qualify for the discount. Our Christmas delivery is booked for 21st December and I don’t want to change it now. So I’m going to forfeit the wonderful offer and just shop as usual. Catriona

  7. I've never been to a Waitrose, there isn't one for miles! The Black Country clearly isn't posh enough for such things.
How sweet is that note? xxx

    2. Vix, there is a lovely Waitrose in Lichfield if you’re ever that way. Just off the Walsall Road, as you head towards the centre… 🙂

    3. We like the Lichfield Waitrose, the staff are lovely. We divide the few things we buy there regularly so we both get our free coffee. They have good bread flours, especially their wholemeal malted and seeded, and a good variety of dried pulses.
Stratford upon Avon Waitrose is a convenient stopping place, for a cake and a free coffee, next to the long stay car park, a pleasant walk along the old tramway or across the playing fields to the ferry into town.

    4. Well Vix, you've got a couple of good suggestions there. Perhaps there will even be a Wetherspoons close by. 😀

  8. Awww, such a sweet note.
I spent a small fortune in Tesco this morning ( it did include most of the Xmas Booze ) however I didn't shop last week but even so it was the most I'd ever parted with at the till of a supermarket 😉🙄😩😁
My challenge to myself is to shop normally in December - we'll see!!!
