When Life Sends You Lemons ...

I made Compost Heap Jelly with the last of my lemon trimmings and apple cores, peelings etc, but this weekend when I was slicing up that lovely new lemon ready for freezing for my morning drinks I decided to do something else with the ends.

The base of my kettle was looking a little bit scaly ... we are lucky here with our lovely Lancashire water, it takes a long time for scale to appear in various household gadgets, unlike when we lived down south when the first boil of a kettle made the scale appear as if by magic ... so I had read a tip that lemon juice would help remove it.

It doesn't, well it might have made a little bit of a difference but not to the same effect that a simple slug of vinegar does.  So I redid it with vinegar ... and lamented my wasted lemon ends. 😔🍋

So ... when life sends you lemons, don't attempt to descale your kettle with them, anything else but not that.

  1. I would never have thought of lemons. It's vinegar and a good clean out afterwards for me - works a treat. xx

    1. It's definitely back to vinegar for me too. It definitely works so much better. 🙂

  2. I'm sorry you had to waste your lemon ends, but, good to know they don't remove the scale buildup. I've been making lemonade with my lemons (I've three Meyer lemon trees).

    1. Ooh, lucky you ... I have never been able to keep a lemon tree alive, even when we lived in much warmer southern England. I have tried a few times, so I won't risk murdering any more poor trees. :-)

  3. Our motorhome kettle needs cleaned out frequently as we meander round Britain but our home one in central Scotland seldom does. And yes, vinegar for me too. The jelly looks amazing. Catriona

    1. It looks good, but I've not tasted it yet as I'm still working my way through the last lot. The water we had in Berkshire was the absolute worst, we went through so much vinegar and so many water filters when we lived there.

    1. I can't say for this one as I'm not opening it yet, but it's usually very fruity and citrus-y. I like it best when I have been able to use lots of lemon and orange skins like this time. I shared the link to making it on Saturday's post. :-)

  5. When I lived in Oxfordshire the water was terrible but here in Wales it's much nicer and scale takes a lot longer to build up thankfully.
    Your jelly looks gorgeous x

    1. Yes, our Welsh water was almost as tasty as the Lancashire water ... and obviously very prolific. Lovely wet Wales. :-)

  6. I had some cut-up lemons that were getting old, so I put them in a saucepan and let them simmer while I was working in the kitchen. They smelled so good, but it only lasted for a while, then they lost their smell. Oh well. We both gave it a good try! :)

    1. But I bet the house smelled lovely and fresh, even if it was only for a while. 🍋🍋🍋

  7. Our Midlands water is so hard, we're forever having to descale our kettle. It used to be really weird washing my face or shampooing my hair when we used to go on holiday in the Lakes, it took forever to get rid of the bubbles! xxx

    1. Haha yes, I remember going on holiday up North when we lived in Berkshire, and having a shower full of bubbles just from using my usual amount of shower gel. I looked like a Yeti. 😂
