News Ways of Cooking

When my Remoska broke at the end of last year, literally two weeks after Alan's bit the dust, I had to decide whether to buy another one for myself, or whether to invest in an alternative way of cooking that would save me a similar amount of money.

Alan asked me to order a new Remoska for him from Lakeland and while I was putting his order in I had a look at their range of air fryers.  When I saw the price of THIS one I was very impressed, at exactly a hundred pounds cheaper than a replacement Remoska would have been, I thought it was time I brought myself bang up to date with one of the latest kitchen accessories.

Although it takes up quite a bit more space on my only bit of worktop I managed to find a way to make things work for me.  The electric kettle now sits at the back of the hob, on the ring and section that I never use and the air fryer takes up the space that the kettle and Remoska used to occupy when they were both out on the worktop, although the Remoska was usually put away into the cupboard between uses.

I still happily manage to cook in exactly the same way as I did before, with a pan on the front section of the hob and occasionally, as with this meal, with a steamer on top.  With the other part of the meal being cooked in one of the drawers of the air fryer.

I have to say that after a few months using it, I am very impressed with my new purchase.  The only negative I've found is the noise it makes.  But that's mostly because I am usually sat directly opposite from it on my computer, and after all it is just a very small fan oven ... but with less soundproofing than a full size fan oven has.

I think in the three months or so that I have been using it I have only turned the oven on a couple of times, each time making sure I filled it to capacity, so I am more than happy to put up with a whirring fan behind me if my bank account is staying a bit healthier.

So I am happy to say that my change of small cooking appliance has been a happy one.  😀

And now it's time to relax into the weekend, I hope you all have a good one.

  1. That's the same air fryer I've got, I love it and use it nearly every day. Yes it is a bit noisy though, fortunately I can shut the kitchen door if necessary. I also have a smaller single drawer air fryer (not a Lakeland one) in the caravan, it suits us very well. However did our parents manage with just a cooker?!

    1. I'm a bit sorry I didn't go for the smaller one, as I have never used both drawers at the same time.

I guess they managed the same way we used to. I had no gadgets at all when I was bringing my boys up, not even a toaster for the first few years.

  2. Air fryers are a very useful bit of kit aren't they? Yes, agree a bit noisy, I'm able to keep ours in the utility so that helps. I was looking at the Remoska again online recently, I've never owned one or seen one in action, but it does sound as though I don't need one as well as an air fryer!
    Enjoy your weekend x

    1. No you definitely don't need both. An air fryer is like a mini fan oven and a Remoska is like a mini normal oven. Now that I've had both, if I had to choose one or the other especially in my tiny kitchen space, I think it would be a Remoska.

  3. I had to do some research to find out what this Remoska is. It does sound versatile, especially for a compact kitchen. Noted.

    1. You could have just clicked on the link, that's why I included it. 🙂 They are really versatile.

    1. I know of quite a few people who have two, but I think mine is more than enough for just me. :-)

  5. We have both but the Remoska wins hands down in the motorhome as we elected not to have an oven. Catriona

    1. They just take up so much less space don't they, and can easily fit into a cupboard when not in use. There's no way I can put the air fryer away between uses.

  6. Not for the first time, odd one out here 😞 A few weeks ago I caved in to the lure of a big discount voucher which Lakeland had sent me and ordered a small (8L) fryer.

Although the box did not appear to have been tampered with, the fryer was marked in 3 places outside as if it had been used. When we tried it out it seemed to cook well enough, but the beeps and buzzes and panic alarms it sounded when finished were not right . . . then realised that it was rated at 1700W which is only a fraction of the electric LESS than my regular fan oven. I would have to cook for hours & hours to save the purchase price off my LX bill.

Thankfully Lakeland are remarkably brilliant about returns.

    1. I resisted the urge for a long time, and would no doubt not have bothered to get an air fryer if my Remoska hadn't broken. I actually like the air fryer for it's timer beeping loudly, as I'm now someone with no sense of smell I never know if something is burning in the kitchen without a timer to remind me when things are ready. I've lost a few pieces of toast when the toaster has jammed!!

  7. Like Bag End Gardener above I am also an odd one out and don't have an air fryer - I am a real old fashioned non- gadget person I like a sharp knife and my steamer. I have only just got a toaster since having a new kitchen after being married for 48 years but only use that about once a month if I get an urge to eat toast! I have never had a microwave at home either (though we did get one for the caravan as an emergency before we had the gas connected but only heat up my wheat bag in it now and the odd baked potato). My daughter brought her air fryer on holiday with us last year (we go self catering) so I could see what it does but as well as taking up most of the worktop it was a bit too noisy for me and always beeping and we found it difficult to cook a meal or part of a meal for all of us at once (5 of us). She had to keep stopping it to shake the food about and restarting it seemed such a faff to me and it seemed to take just as long as cooking it in a normal oven, but she likes it. Each to their own. I am pleased you like yours and it is saving you money - I think like microwaves they are the biggest selling item at present and very popular.

    1. Oh I do love my toaster and electric kettle, and yes ... I always ask myself when small gadgets come out 'could a knife do that?' nine times out of ten the answer is yes. I mostly use my microwave for reheating my coffee, when I have forgotten about it on my desk!!

  8. I do like my air fryer, and should actually use it a bit more than I do. I should actually use more appliances (I have lots) to do my cooking. Something I need to get in the habit of.

    God bless.

    1. They are a good kitchen gadget aren't they, and not as new as most people think they are. My brother got one many years ago ... although he only seems to use it to make chips!! (Fries)

  9. I too have that air fryer and use it most days since my small oven gave up the ghost. I like the idea of no fats but I do miss the convenience of my small oven.

    1. I think it's good to make do without something for a while and then work out if it is really useful to you isn't it. I did this when I moved here and didn't get a microwave for a long time, but then I found I was washing a lot more pans when I was reheating things, so when I found a nice small one I reinvested.

  10. I'm in team non air fryer, too. I've got a slow cooker from 1975 and a microwave from a charity shop and that's the extent of our gadgetry!
Love that quote. Someone much wiser than me once reminded me when I was dashing around like the mad thing that I am, Remember you're a Human Being not a Human Doing! xxx

  11. Hi Sue I have an air fryer, with two baskets, haven’t looked back since, rarely use my oven now, the best recipes I have found for an air fryer is Nathan Antony’s Bored of Lunch books, given me so much inspiration for my air fryer and also he has slow cooker cookery book’s which I also use. On channel 4 at the mo Jamie Oliver is doing a series on air fryer recipes. It’s so quick to use we had Sunday dinner in 20 minutes today.
    Hope you are keeping well,Margaret

    1. I watched the first Jamie does air fryers, but I've yet to watch the second, although I have it recorded so I should. His new series starts this week doesn't it. All about seasonal Spring recipes, although I'm still eating quite wintery foods at the moment, it's been really cold here.

  12. No air fryer here either. Had never considered a Remoska but actually that sounds better for me if I was getting another gadget.

    1. Having now had both they are my preference, for what they do and the space they take up.

  13. We've wondered about getting an air fryer, but as my husband does the cooking, he decided he'd rather use the oven, so we're still talking about it! I like the fact it cooks chips with less fat,

    1. I think that's why my brother got his air fryer many years ago, the cooks chips with less fat angle. I love that it cooks everything a little bit faster, takes no time to heat up and makes everything nice and just crispy enough ... chips included.
