A Shocking Stocktake

It all started with me using the last of  the penne in the large pasta jar last night and needing to refill it.

Realising it was what I thought were the last two bags of pasta being tipped into it, I added pasta to my shopping list.  Then I remembered that I also had lots of spaghetti and thought I would check how much, perhaps I could just use that instead.

It turned into a full scale pasta and rice stocktake, with me sat on the floor and things being pulled out of the cupboard left, right and centre.

After half an hour I had written out the top half of this stock take, and then I remembered another stash of assorted pastas in one of my basket drawers.  I seems that I have more than enough pasta.

I added together all the various pastas and rice's ... and I have the grand total of over eight and a half kilos of each.  That's a combined total of over one hundred and seventy portions of carbohydrates to go with my meals.

At the rate of two portions of each per week that's the rest of this year sorted out then!!

Needless to say I have now crossed pasta off my shopping list. ๐Ÿ˜

Perhaps I should stocktake my tins of tomatoes after buying another eight last week ... I don't know if I dare!

  1. When I was cleaning out every cupboard in the kitchen I found all sorts of things in odd places-mainly the high shelves that I need the steps to see. The biggest culprit was husband’s oat milk and bags of porridge. We have enough to last until September!! Catriona

    1. It's shocking how things mount up without you realising isn't it. Most of these were hidden down low, so I think I need to crawl around the kitchen more ... and then get my steps out to see what's up high. I also think I should grit my teeth and get on with a full stock-take.

  2. I think it's safe to say you're an official Pastaholic!! Not to mention the rice.....and the tomatoes. You'll never go hungry Sue - well, not for a year or so anyway! ;-)

    1. I do love the stuff, but even for me 8.5kg seems excessive. :-)

  3. Do you like pasta then?
When I sorted out Mum and Dad's pantry, I found all sorts of dried goods that were so old even I felt they had to be thrown out.
    I hated doing it, but . . .

    1. You would have a shock if I said no ... it's fair to say I love the stuff, and rice too. :-)

Now I've found it all, it's lined up in the one place and in date order so nothing goes to waste, the oldest is best before 2023, so it's all good to eat as it's been in a nice dark and dry cupboard since I bought it, well apart from when I moved house with it ... haha.

  5. I had to do a quick calculation to see what 8.5 kilos came to in terms of pounds; 18.7 lbs. of rice isn't too much in my opinion. I usually keep at least 20 lbs. of rice in stock, although I have less pasta. I think it's because you live in a place where you feel you have access to a fully stocked grocery store any time you might want to buy something, whereas I feel I need to be prepared to not have access to a fully stocked grocery store should there be an earthquake (I live in California) severe enough to damage stores or cause power outages which would force the stores to close, or damage roads which would disrupt supplies being delivered to the stores or make it difficult for me to drive to the store. Having said that, a regular stock check is a good idea and I should do one, myself. :)

    1. Yes, I'm literally a five minute drive from three different supermarkets these days. It was different when we lived in thee middle of nowhere and regularly risked getting stuck on the farm, then it made sense to have large stocks of food ... and I did. :-)

I like the sound of 20lbs of rice, a nice neat number ... maybe I should get more and round up to 10kg. ;-)

  6. I need to do a stock take too. Last week I paid a ridiculous price for brown rice in Asda, only to find that I had a full one in the larder cupboard. I'm blaming him because it had been put on a different shelf. I keep padras and rice in one place with couscous etc. Logical! I normally buy brown rice, wholemeal pasta from Aldi when I go to my hairdressers, which is 16 miles away, as we don't have one locally.

    1. I think the reason I have so much of some things is that they are stored in different halves of my food cupboard, and also in the overflow drawers. I think doing a stocktake would enable me to put like with like and be able to see exactly what I have. Asda has really good prices on their wholemeal pasta and rice don't they, I miss having an Asda close to us.

  7. I am laughing, but only because I've had the same problem on occasions. Eventually I realised that when ~ I ~ put (for example) pasta away in went in the right cupboard but when Himself put it away he'd created a 'pantry' in another place. Anonymous above seems to have the same issue ๐Ÿ˜‚

It's not a bad problem to have though, when you read about what little or non-existent food stocks some people have.

    1. Exactly, if anything it's a very good problem to have, especially this year when I am trying to keep my spend low. Unfortunately, I can't blame Alan for things being put away in the wrong places, it's all down to me and it's time to get organised.

  8. We don't eat a huge amount of pasta as my husband isn't keen but I always keep rice, spaghetti and penne. However my five year old grandson was coming for dinner so I decided to buy the tri-colour twists pasta. When I went to put it in the cupboard there was already one there unopened. Doh! I must have had that same thought earlier and forgotten it. Not on the scale of your pasta hoard but it will still last us a good while and shows how easily things get forgotten.

    1. Oh yes, things get forgotten so easily. I have done exactly the same as you and had the same good idea twice in the past. Thinking of something that my Mum would like buying it, and then the following week doing exactly the same again. Deja vu in the supermarket. ๐Ÿ˜„

  10. That's a lotta pasta & rice! We visit one of those out of date food warehouses twice a year and have to buy by the case and I thought we'd got a fair bit of Napolini pea pasta and sachets of Tilda rice in our larder until I saw your stash.
Back st infant school in the 1970s I remember doing crafts with dried pasta which had been sprayed gold. Maybe you could have a new hobby?! xxx

    1. Ooh ... imagine how much pasta and rice I'd be tempted to buy if I went there. ๐Ÿ˜„ Nooo, I'm not crafting with my pasta, although thinking back I remember making necklaces with penne pasta with the children at my son's nursery many years ago. ๐Ÿ˜€
