I bought a pack of the Wicked Kitchen Spinach and Wild Garlic Ravioli from Tesco last time we were in Wales. It was a bit of a splurge at £3 for a pack so it was definintely a treat, it did made me think how easily and how much more cheaply I could make this myself, as lots of this sort of products do. But of course the question is would I ever have the time and patience to bother?
It was delicious and something I might buy again, but I guess on reflection it would be cheaper and perhaps fresher to make the sauce myself and just serve it with pasta.
There were 14 pieces of ravioli in the pack so I had half of them one night and then the other half a couple of days later. I kept it really simple, just using a good drizzle of my 'Plants' Oak Smoked Tomato Ketchup ... which in itself seemed a bit of a splurge at the time, but it's lasting me ages as the taste is so blissfully rich and balanced that you don't need much of it at all ... under the ravioli and a sprinkle of grated cheese on top.
It was one of those meals where each mouthful is a delight and worth savouring, and that long after eating it you don't want to eat or drink anything else to mask that lovely flavour in your mouth.
No dessert for me that night then, for which my waistline was extremely grateful in the post Christmas period.
Have you tried any 'new to you' products recently?
Sue xx
Not bought ones but am experimenting with home made sausages!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds interesting. Even when we had pigs we never made our own sausages, we got the entire pig dealt with by a very good local butcher. Once when we got virtually a whole pig turned into bacon and sausages our meat fridge was VERY full of packs of sausages.
DeleteI bought Waitrose spinach and ricotta cannelloni and it was delicious but very rich even with some roccoli on the side. Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt is a very decadent mix of flavours isn't it. I was surprised that the vegan version was so delicious.
DeleteJust started reading Chris Van T's book. Like Dc above, doing "made from scratch" at the minute (not got round to sausages yet) and hoping to make some pasta next week.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very good book isn't it, I read it last year when it first came out and now happily there's a real resurgence of readers. I make my own pasta quite regularly, but at the moment I have lots of dried pasta in so I am spared the rolling and draping. :-)
DeleteI have shelves full of cook books so this year I'm hoping to give myself a 'shake up' and make one New to us dish each week..........
ReplyDeleteThose ravioli can be so delicious can't they, and so quick to prepare.
Alison in Wales x
Years ago I had a blog called 'Cooking the Books' where I cooked a recipe from one of my books every few days and joined in challenges with other bloggers to cook a random recipe. We were told what number book on our shelves to cook from and what page, it was very 'pot-luck', but fun.
DeleteThis sounds delicious. :)
ReplyDeleteThey were both really tasty. The roasted tomato sauce is brilliant on a good old sausage butty too. :-)
DeleteThat looks and sounds lovely. Jon stocks up on the fancy fresh pasta when it's been yellow stickered in Morrisons. Good idea on making the sauce yourself to chuck over plain pasta. Wild garlic grows in abundance in our garden and I'm always after ideas of how to use it. xxx
ReplyDeleteWe transplanted a lot of wild garlic on our Welsh hillside in the woodland, about a year before we moved, I bet the new owners are reaping the benefit.
DeleteI think I'll look for that Ravioli sounds delish and we usually pop to Tesco on a Monday afternoon for yogurts as altho we have a delivery they don't deliver individual yogurts.
ReplyDeleteIt was really tasty. Sadly we don't have a Tesco close to us, but I think I'll get a couple more packs next time we are in Wales.
DeleteI've never particularly been a fan of pasta - but new-to-me is the ZenB range, made entirely from yellow peas - settle much lighter in my stomach, and it's gluten-free.

I started by trying the Pasta & Sauce sampler pack. followed swiftly by more types of pasta and some more delicious sauces. Ideal for a dinner-in-a-hurry . Then there are the crackers - Mmmmmm And the Agile Bowls. I buy them all online - delivery is free. I'll never go back to 'ordinary' pasta.
Yes, I tried a selection of these last year and really enjoyed them, so I put in a big order. They are very tasty aren't they. The little snack pots/Agile Bowls were really handy too when we went on holiday. Luckily our Sainsbury's regularly has pea pasta and red lentil pasta at really good prices so I tend to buy these now or the Deliciously Ella pasta packs with spinach or turmeric. I still love the bog standard wheat pasta too though ... now I sound like a pasta addict don't I. 😀
DeleteSeveral months ago I bought a brand called "Wicked" one jar being out of this world sliced red onions and the other jar is seductively sweet n spicy Kimchi. I plan on trying these with my lunch today, fingers crossed:)
ReplyDelete'Wicked' is a range of vegan food in Tesco here, are your Wicked products the same? Because sweet n spicy kimchi sounds lovely, I'll have to look out for it. 🙂
DeleteHi Sue, the jars don't say vegan foods however on the jars there are no preservatives and fermented. I would say it's a different range as the Kimchi is a product of Poland and the red onions a product from India. I really enjoyed both especially the sliced red onions♥
ReplyDeleteThey sound good no matter what. I have found a jar of 'Biona' brand Kimchi in my cupboard so I am going to give that a try soon. xx
