Just Read Books

With the suddenly colder weather back again I've been sinking into books almost every afternoon.

It's cosy in my little living room with the sun streaming through the French doors on the sunny but 'cold outside' days, and it feels even cosier if the rain is battering the glass and I can be inside with the heating on and a cup of coffee to hand, and of course the occasional biscuit ... or three.

When the warmer weather appeared last week Alan brought our garden chairs down from his spare room and put them on the patio, then the weather turned cold, wet and windy and we have yet to actually sit on them.  One day soon ... hopefully, it will be warm enough, perhaps with a cardigan on, to sit outside and read on one of them.

We can but hope.  😎

In the meantime I will sit indoors and carry on really enjoying my latest book, it's one by Stanley Tucci.  It's the sort of book that I love, very foody ... enough to make me hungry while I read ... and very well written.  He has a slight sarcastic at time humour that I find funny, and gosh doesn't he know a lot of very famous people so well.

Being half Italian and a really good home cook, he's making me want to eat more pasta with his wonderful descriptions of the meals that he makes, which can only be a good thing considering my current spaghetti mountain.  😄

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  1. If reading gives you peace, you are doing it right. I agree. I think most any reading is good. I even encouraged my kids to read comic books. If you get your kids on the road to reading they will find much joy there in the years to come.

    1. Exactly. Both my now adult sons, joined our local libraries at just 18 months of age, when the librarians saw how careful they were with books. They were brought up devouring books as was I. One is still a prolific reader ... and the other one owns ONE book. 😄

  2. Can I ask the title of Stanley Tucci’s book Sue? I always think pick up a book and you can be in another world and there are so many worlds.I love seeing what Alan’s been up to, such skill and knowledge.Of course everything is in the interior design…that being you Sue🤣 Only joking Alan, well done. 1. His book is called 'What I Ate in One Year (and related thoughts)'.

We are a good team we both bring a lifetime of specialist knowledge to our areas of expertise ... one of the few good things about being older and on our 20th house move. 😄

  3. I love that picture of a sofa... it looks so inviting. Makes me want to replace it Now with one like that (but in a patterned fabric; if I had a cream one it would soon look grubby!) Books, blanket, coffee, biscuits - yes!

  4. I have to say, I wouldn't be found reading a cookery book, but that's just me. I have my farmhousy cookery ones and baking ones when I need a recipe, but that's it. Currently reading an Edith Pargeter trilogy, set around the 12th C.

    1. Most modern cook books have more than just recipes in them, and old recipe books are just written so well. 💚 I wouldn't read historical novels, but happily we are all different and book shops cater to us all.

  5. I love Stanley Tucci, a clever, funny guy and gifted actor. Brilliant in " Julie and Julia", where you just know he is enjoying his wife's cooking

    1. I actually stopped reading his book and sat and rewatched 'Julie and Julia' for the third time last weekend. It was just as good. 💚

    1. We had such a lovely start to this morning, but in the space of an hour in the garden centre the weather changed to high winds and sleet. 🫤

  7. I love Nigel Slater for the same reason. I could cosy up in that reading chair in the photo. Weather so cold again here, I have had to abandon garden again, also because mum has had another of her 'episodes' and has worn me out. Just having a quiet moment to sit and read sounds good.

    1. My Nigel Slater collection is very well read. ❤️ It's Mum's nursing home we fight with, sadly Mum doesn't have the energy to cause us any problems now.

  8. Reading takes us away from our daily routine and sometime tribulations, so is always worthwhile.

    1. To be able to pick up a book and switch off from the real world, for even a few minutes is a very special thing isn't it. 📚

  9. This time of the year seems to be bipolar everywhere I've lived. Yesterday was about 70 degrees F, today should be mid 70's, and by next Wednesday it'll be cold and rainy. Oh well.

    1. We've had a weekend of cold temperatures, high winds and random sleet showers. Oh, and a few little glimpses of sunshine, just to show us what we're missing. 😄

  10. What lovely illustrations. So nice always to be able to retreat into a book, at the moment I wrap myself in a fleece blanket when reading - hard to imagine that in a few short weeks we’ll all be in t shirts saying how hot it is !

  12. I have been reading more lately, too. I had forgotten how comforting it is to just sit and read. A couple of cookies make it even more so.

  13. I read most evenings before bed. Nothing is better to me than curling up with a book in bed.

    God bless.
