Making Money ... and a Renovation Update

At the end of last week with a car loaded up and jingling all the way, we took a trip to the scrap metal recycling merchants that turned out to be reasonably near us in Preston.  We both had a guess at how much our offerings would be worth.  We had heard from a few sources that the price of copper was at an all time high, so I guessed at £200 and Alan at a slightly more conservative £150.

Which one of us was the nearest?

We had a copper water heater like the one in the top photo, which I borrowed from Google Images, and the pipes in this photo.  You can see our actual water heater in the last walk through YouTube video that I made at the start of March.  We also had all the stripped out electric cables that Alan had pulled out from under the floors and up in the loft.

The scrap metal yard was a fascinating place, we were pointed to the right 'weighing in' area and had to unload onto the scales, first the tank, then the pipes and finally all the wiring, which were all individually priced.

Then we had to drive over to the office, show proof of identity and give our bank details, as all money is paid straight into your account these days to discourage theft of metals from church roofs etc. as this then gives a complete transaction trail.

Anyway, what was the total I hear you shouting ... it was £509 of which £106 was for the old copper boiler.

So I was the closest, even if I was a long way out.  😀

We treated ourselves to breakfast at Barton Grange Garden Centre on the way home to celebrate.

Now the bungalow is completely stripped out, we also got our planning permission through last week, so the alterations to the front of the bungalow will be allowed, and the garage is now almost finished.  The next steps will be to take a couple of walls down, and then start filling in the floor space again.  We will be using the bricks from the walls to fill in the floor, you don't get much money for selling off old blocks!!

    1. It was a very busy and noisy place for sure, the guys next to us were weighing in four old cement mixers. It was all fascinating, I do get some good days out don't I. 😄

    1. We were both thrilled with the amount. Alan did a little happy dance when he was handed the receipt. I bet the guy behind the counter thought he was mad 😄

    1. Definitely worth the drive. 😀

Next step is the garage floor being sealed and coated. Then it's demolition of two interior walls. 🫤

  9. Thinking of what is in MY tip load tomorrow, believe me there is nothing worth any money whatsoever, although someone might appreciate the big pile of fencing wood as firewood.

    1. We can't get rid of any wood to the tip, Alan is chopping everything up for the log burner. His piles are building at an alarming rate. 🫤

  11. That's a great price!!
We drove our previous Audi estate work horse, 20yrs old, to the scrap yard 2 years ago & got £380 for it. I could have kicked myself afterwards as I realised I'd left about £20 worth of £1 coins in the ashtray that I used for parking!!! We upgraded to the same model, but slightly younger at 19yrs old!! They go on forever.

    1. Oh no, I would have kicked myself too. 😟 We are hoping to go back to an Audi next time. Alan still misses his A6.

  13. Nice! Alan sure knows how to party. :) A worthy dance for him, I'd say, considering the labour it took to strip it all out. Happy to hear you had a nice breakfast out of the deal. On to the floors...

    1. He really does. 😄 Yes, onto the floors next, first sealing the garage floor, then actually building floors in the bungalow.

  14. A good haul and a well deserved breakfast.
Are you installing insulated solid floors?

    1. First we have to install actual base level infill and concrete floors to build the level back up. Then it's insulation and underfloor heating, then finally wood-effect floor tiles.

    1. Thank you. Alan said it made all the scrabbling around on the floor and up in the loft on his hands and knees worthwhile. 🙂

  17. Perhaps you will have some rollout shelves in new cabinets. Helps easily see what you have. I love my kitchen deep drawers. Do ask the installer or contact the manufacturer how much weight each drawer will hold.

    1. There's a small roll out style shelf unit on either side of the oven. We are having the same large drawers as we have in our current property, so we know how strong they are. We are actually replicating my current kitchen, but obviously there will be more cupboards and drawers

The new kitchen is pictured here:
