Presents, Meals and Progress

My elder son and his fiancée called on Saturday for a coffee, they were on their way back from their yearly visit to Mum.  He had already sent me a box of 'Letterbox Flowers' ... not that any of our postmen have ever realised that the box will fit through the letterbox, they always knock on the door ... luckily the flowers were just starting to open out so he got to see them looking good.  They are even better today, fully open, really filling the jug and looking so fresh.

Alan got back later bringing me some sparkling water and some paracetamol ... oh he knows the way to a girl's heart.  😄

I've been trying to use a few things from the freezer this week, so my lunch was a bowl of the soup that I made here and half of one of the garlic breads that I bought here.  There's something very luxurious about a garlic bread dipped in a tasty homemade soup.  The soup gets a bit more garlicky with each dip.

A bang up to date progress report of the bungalow.

Alan sent me this photo of the opened up loft space late afternoon yesterday.  We aren't using the loft for living space, there isn't the head height to add rooms as it is at the moment, and anyway we like the fact that our bungalow is a 'true' bungalow.  But we are having to have both the gable ends taken down and rebuilt as the wooden lintels above the windows below have all rotted.  We are putting in all new lintels above the windows and doors.  It's not a huge problem really as we are changing the sizes of all but one of the windows, so it would have made sense to change them anyway.

Alan got the photo because he was also up in the loft working to make a wooden pathway to the front of the roof space for access to what will be the solar installation panel.  He said at it's busiest there were six workmen and himself all getting on with various jobs.

He is absolutely loving it.

  1. I've just been reading about someone renovating a derelict doll's house... same idea, vastly different scale!

    1. Haha, oh how I wish ours was a doll's house. It's small but not that small. :-)

  2. I think our postie rings because he prefers to hand deliver if he can than, rather let the flowers fall on the floor

  4. My mailman will ring and run. Whether my car is in the drive or not. Its a good thing we don't get many porch pirates as sometimes the item will sit in full view of the street for most of the day until I get home. Your flowers are lovely. What a nice thing to have a son stop by for coffee! (:

    1. It broke his four hour journey heading home after visiting his Gran, and it was lovely to see him. We took him round to the bungalow too, last time he saw it it was all in one piece ... he was a bit shocked!! ;-)

    1. He didn't do all that, the builders are now back on the job and really cracking on. We won't be using the loft for storage, anything we have that is only used yearly will be on the shelves in the garage. Neither of us like having any excess stuff, so the loft will just be for the solar control panels and the night time batteries.

  7. My Goodness! They would've been squashed up there! Are you having access for storage? My son and DIL have a swing-down ladder so things like the Christmas decorations can live up there. It would require some self discipline though, or it would end up being a total rubbish collection! Your family are wonderful - flowers for Mum, and Paracetamol!! Storage is a problem in our "down-sized" home, the roofspace is inaccessible as it is entered by a "very-small-boy hole" inside a tiny wardrobe. Totally ridiculous. I feel sorry for the man who comes to change the filter in the DVS system, which is, of course, up there.

    1. Only one other man and Alan up in the loft so they fitted nicely, the rest were knocking down walls 'downstairs'. No we won't be storing things in the loft, Christmas decorations will live in the garage. We have a loft hatch in the kitchen area for access to the solar control panels etc.

I guess service guys are used to strange places for services etc, poor them. :-)

  8. I can just see Alan being in 7th heaven with this redo. Things seem to be moving right along. Hopefully all goes well and you get in when you had planned to.

    God bless.

    1. He is absolutely relishing every day. I am staying at home and relishing NOT having to be involved in this one. I did Wales, Alan is doing England. :-)

We are still hoping to be in around Christmas time if possible.

  9. Beautiful flowers, and looking really good for having come via the post! I'm glad at least one of you is happy dealing with the renovations. :)

    1. Alan LOVES the planning and execution of his plans, and being in the company of all the tradesmen. I hated being left to cope with the workmen, mess and disruption for well over a year when we lived in Wales.

It's a clever flower postage system, they all come in a flat box that fits through the letterbox. It's amazing watching them gratefully drink after their journey. 🌷
