A Blast from the Past

I was searching for an image of a coin purse to use as an illustration on yesterdays blog post, but the only ones I could find online that I liked were copyrighted.  So, I went back in time on my old blog and found an image of my old purse to use instead.

Dangerous stuff, it sent me down a rabbit hole of blog posts from various years, where cash was indeed king as we shopped with limited budgets gleaned from our various sealed pots..

This one was particularly interesting, it's from the era when we all used to share things to get to know each other better.  It suited the times but I'm not so sure we would really do that sort of thing now ... or would we?

But, I decided I would be brave again and share it with you.

  1. Everyone younger than me just seem to carry their phone with their debit card tucked into it!
I'm still a handbag full of all sorts person. (which might make a post for the future if I remember)

    1. I've done that occasionally when I haven't wanted to take a bag out with me ... and I also have an emergency £20 note tucked into my phone case. It used to be an emergency £10 note for coffees or suchlike, but then Alan said 'what if I want a cake with my coffee' so I upped the limit. He also carries an emergency £20, so I suspect he's planning a feast!!

    2. Haha I like Alan's thinking. With the rate of inflation you'd of probably needed to up your limit anyway lol

    1. Gosh, it's annoying when that happens isn't it, many a time I've been halfway through a comment and it disappears. I think my phone is definitely the heaviest thing in my bag these days, the phone in the blog post photo is a much smaller offering, but then it was back in 2010.

I love your sense of humour with your new rose, I hope you have a restful weekend. :-)

  3. Lovely to re-read that post. I’m a backpack kind of woman these days and am currently wearing a Ridley one which I got in the Chester Oaks outlet enroute to Wales. Like you, I wear them out even though I have some beautiful ones in my wardrobe. Catriona

    1. Sometimes I go down a rabbit hole of reading old posts, they seem as new to me as anyone else. Well I guess that particular one was written 15 years ago ... where HAS the time gone!!

I only ever own one handbag at a time these days and use it until it wears out, I used to be a real 'bag lady' when I first met Alan. I love the one I have now as it is small, has slots for cards, space for notes and an inner zip compartment for coins, so I don't need to own a purse anymore.

    3. Yes, Isla he is ... I haven't swapped hubby's honest!!

Back in the day due to the nature of his work he couldn't be named on social media, then the rules relaxed slightly, so I did too ... and he gave me permission to share his name. LH stood for Lovely Hubby. :-)

  4. I really enjoyed reading that Thank you. I love a bag but somehow, more and more I'm joining in the thing of just carrying my phone with a cash card and a fiver stuffed in it and anything else I need in my jeans pockets.
Sign of the times I guess .....

    1. I've been thinking recently that I really need to just carry my phone rather than take my bag everywhere. Life would be a lot easier, and lighter for sure. Maybe over Winter when I'm wearing a jacket that would hold a small purse in the pocket this will be possible. Or perhaps I need to look for an even smaller bag?

  5. Golly, I enjoyed reading your old post. I don't think I saw it first time round. Your bag must have weighed a ton ! These days, I have to carry a lighter bag than I used to otherwise it hurts my shoulder so I've taken to a smallish cross body bag. Lucky I do because it saved my hip when I fell on Thursday 🤫

    1. Did you follow me way back then, that post was from 2010 ... a whole lifetime ago!! ;-)

All my really old posts can be linked to from the 'Our New Life in the Country' photo on the sidebar. Perhaps rainy day reading for Winter ... haha.

  6. I have a phone case that holds cards on the back. I always keep a bank card with me as well as ID (incase of emergencies coz paramedics won't be able to get into your phone). The reason I carry my cards is coz I was at the hospital one time and I went to Costa coffee for a treat and the contactless had gone down so they couldn't accept any payments from phones etc but if you had your bank card you could put it into the card machine and that would work or go to the ATM and get cash but the ATM didn't accept contactless either (older type machine). It got me thinking of the amount of times people go out with a phone just taking for granted they can pay using it when sometimes you can't so it's always best to have a back up imo. I have a little purse aswell for other cards library etc but I take that out only when I need too. I've always loved bags too but I have scaled them back over the years aswell. Like yourself I use them till they are no more. Don't you find though things are just not made to last like they used to be!

    1. I don't have the facility to pay with my phone, mostly because I don't want it. Card payment is about as far as I will go. This bag is lasting me quite well, I think it's about twelve years old up to now. We'll have to see how long it does actually last.

    2. 12 years wow that is good! I prefer cash or card payment but more and more car parks seem to be switching to pay by phone which is really annoying.
I don't think I've had a bag last that long that I've repeatedly used but the one I'm currently using was free off a friend so it's been used before I got it and I've used it loads too. I call it my Tardis bag coz it looks really small but holds so much stuff lol (phone, keys, purse, makeup, meds, body spray, handcream etc). The only thing it doesn't hold is a book or bottle which I do like taking out with me but I'll leave it in the car or put it in a little canvas bag along with a water bottle 😊

    3. I meant I like taking a book and water bottle so I'll put both in the car or in a little canvas bag

  7. I had to get a bigger handbag now I have to stuff it with emergency medication, spectacles and the darn phone, plus a husband who often says "could you just pop this in your bag". Canadians call their handbags purses. Doesn't make sense to me and I still get caught using the wrong word.

    1. Yep, quite a few of the things that I carry are actually for Alan. The amount of times he says 'Do you happen to have a ...?' is unbelievable. I'm like a boy scout, always prepared, because usually I do!!

Yes, here a bag is the thing that everything goes into, including your purse which is for cash and cards only.

  8. I have been trying to so hard to use a smaller handbag, and made the last one. However on this upcoming trip I need something that actually closes so will be searching for a new purse. And yes I am a Canadian.

    God bless.

    1. Yes, we have some different words for different things don't we. Luckily, we mostly know where each of us is from. :-)

    2. I live in the USA, and we use the word "purse" for our handbag, and wallet is the word for the small one that has cards and cash. Anne in Wyoming

    3. Wallet is being used more and more for 'purses' these days in the UK, but it always used to be what just men put their money in, and women had purses. And bag is just short for handbag ... the thing we usually put our purses into. 😄
