Easy Peelers ... and Right Back to Basics

As you can see I make good use of jars in my store-cupboard, all sorts and all sizes.

Lots have been collected over the years especially the Mason jars, Kilner jars and any that are usually purchased new.  Some were bought when they were on special offer, some bought from car boot sales and a few gifted.

But even having lots of jars already ...

... I can never resist an 'easy peeler'.

The ones where a little soak in the sink means that the label peels off smoothly with no sticky residue to get off.  Now that I have so many jars in my arsenal I rarely have that sticky label fight and I'm more than happy to send a jar off for recycling ... unless of course the jar is really special, then I still can't resist.

They are just so useful, and jam jars especially are strong enough for reuse time and time again whether in the freezer for soups and sauces or to actually be used once again for jam.  With the courgettes still coming through I might be tempted to make some chutney and make good use of some of my empty jars.

But as you can see from the top photograph I definitely do not need any Green Tomato Chutney making this year.  😀

While I am supposed to be being really good this year, especially since April when the pay packets stopped rolling in each month, replaced instead by my miniscule private pension of £77.45.  I have in fact let things slip slightly each and every month.

The money that my son owed me has now all been paid back, so no more £100 a month extra to supplement the pension, gosh even the interest from my savings account has gone down and I was drawing that each month into my current account as well, but the tax man had to be paid.  Greedy man!!

I've just checked what I owe on my credit card which is usually paid on or around the 10th of each month and oops ... I owe just over £300.  This will of course be paid in full just as it always is, but doing this will send my current account into an all-time low of just £78.80 after my direct debit for my life insurance has gone out.

It really is time for me to stop messing around and get right back to basics.

The first step is to count all the cash I have in my bag, my little Facebook Marketplace sales pot and my spare change box and see what money I'm playing with ... because cash is going to be king from now on.

I had just finished typing all of the above and Alan came over.  Did I want to go for a *coffee with him as he was going to Booths for a bacon butty, of course I said yes.  When he asked if I wanted any shopping on our way out I said just bread really.  I picked up the buns as they were on offer £1.25 if you had a Booths card instead of the usual £1.40.  He was going to pay for them for me but I stopped him, I had enough bits of change to pay for them myself and I wanted to start immediately.

Then I obviously came back home to finish this post ... and now the Challenge is on.

I did of course accept the kindly offered cup of coffee.  😁

    1. Thank you. Today's main task is to go through the freezer and list what I have ... it's pretty full. 🫤

  2. That is a lot of chutney. Have you considered the many different ways of using it in cooking? It's brilliant for livening up a bland tight-budget diet, and you can also turn it into lovely brown sauce 【check out my blogpost 6th June 23 for recipes] I too am a jar collector!

  3. Another jar hoarder here. I like the faceted jam jars for storing leftovers, such as tinned fruit, in the fridge. We have a sweetie jar each for our weekly 50g ration of good dark chocolate. I use them for the mixed seeds, fruit and nut mix, and salted peanuts. I save honey jars to give to our beekeeping friend.

    1. It's just crazy to put nice jars in the recycling isn't it. They deserve to be reused over and over ... especially the easy peelers.

  4. I love an easy peeler. They're incredibly satisfying :)
Good luck with your challenge! X

    1. They really are aren't they, so satisfying. The worst jars to get the glue off for me are all the Deliciously Ella products, the labels are WELDED onto the glass. They now get recycled without a fight.

  5. I recently decided to get serious about the budget. I go through lazy patches and then wake up and realize I need to get back on track. And I'm a jar hoarder too. I recently used up the last of some jam and the jar had a cute gingham lid and fit in perfectly with the other jars I have. I'll be watching your posts for some money inspiration :)

    1. That's exactly what I've done recently, gotten complacent even knowing that I had such a limited budget. So now it's time to get serious. My first step was to count the money, second step is to inventory the freezer so I can see what I have, it seems to be full of bits and pieces ... lots of them!!

  6. I am so pleased that you like interesting jars. I, too, can't resist an interesting jar. Kindred spirits... And I really enjoy your posts. Thank you for taking the time to write, to challenge.

    1. Some are just too good to go straight into the recycling after their initial use aren't they. :-)

  7. My OH just doesn't get it about the value of a lovely jar, as soon as one is empty he's asking "can it go in recycling?" Sometimes I have to hide them 😉😂 Both Lidl and Aldi jars of jam are easy peelers - lovely 😊

    1. Haha, Alan is exactly the same with new jars, although he's good at saving any jars that I have previously put my jam, marmalade or chutney in. In fact he has most of my jam jars stacked in his top cupboard. That Aldi strawberry jam is delicious too, so I'm glad it's an easy peeler. :-)

  9. Another jar collector here! I like the square jars for crafting especially decoupage using pretty napkins. Well done on trying to “hold in” as my late mother in law always used to say ( actually she said haud in bring Scots). Catriona

    1. I used to use a lot of pretty jars when I crafted and sold at fairs. 😀

One of Alan's Scottish grannys sayings that regularly gets used here is ... Back tae Auld Claes and Cauld Porritch. 😄 It's got to be done.

  10. It's so easy to slip back isn't it. I look forward to more inspiration from you in your challenge!
Of course you had to accept a free coffee from Alan, it would have been rude to refuse having already paid for your own buns ! lol....

    1. Oh yes, it's so easy to let things slip away from you. I don't want to come out of this virtually pension-less year with no savings. 😬

I will never say no to a free coffee. ☕️

  11. Bonne Mamman jars are a favourite. One pasta sauce company uses canning jars complete with markers on the side. A special fav are coffee jars from Douwe Egbert. Husband thinks I'm crazy for bringing them home with me.

My pensions start in September. I resent paying ta on them because I already paid tax on the money put into them

    1. I've always wished that I like Douwe Egbert coffee, the jars are brilliant. I did used to have a really good array of large Nescafe jars for my dried goods. They were retired and recycled as I built up my 'posher' ones jar by jar. 😀

  12. I, too, have a nice collection of jars that I reuse to store various things. But I buy canning jars for the jams and chutneys I make to give as gifts.
Wish you well with the new challenge; I know you can do it. :)

    1. Thanks. Yes it is nice to give gifts of jams etc in new jars isn't it, some people are a bit funny about reused jars ... sadly. 🫤

  13. The only real jars that I have are ones that I have purchased to can with. I think I am going to start saving jars to use for storage and reclaim my canning jars. Most jars that I purchase are not really suitable for anything but storage.
I know you will do very well with your new challenge.

    God bless.

    1. That sounds like a good plan, reclaiming your canning jars for their real purpose and saving some nice jars to take their place. 😀
