I received the comment below last night, but didn't see it until this morning. At first I didn't understand why the person had commented on one of my old posts, but it only took Googling Tania to realise that this brings up a post of mine that she was mentioned in when she started her YouTube channel.
I'll let you read it before I say anything else -

It seems that Tania of Living on a UK state pension has closed her you tube channel. It sounds like she was being harassed terribly via comments. I don't know why people feel the need to be so cruel. I thought her channel was fantastic and I really will miss it. I was particularly disappointed that I wasn't able to send her a comment letting her know how much she will be missed. Anyone know how to get in touch with her?
This is odd as I went to look at Tania's you tube thingy and found she posted just recently about blackberry jam!
ReplyDeleteYes, she said on her last video, the one where she walking the dog and explaining why she is closing the channel down for now, that she had some videos already filmed that she would be putting up this week. She has disabled the comments though.
DeleteOh, right, I'm afraid I've rarely watched any youtubers recently - tends to be a winter occupation, so hadn't watched tania all the time and didn't hang around to watch the three posts that are still there.
DeleteI get quite frustrated with bloggers who stop and start and take offence although that's my problem not theirs as they are free to do whatever.
I don't mind people that suddenly stop, but it's nice to have a bit of a heads up as to why. Even without that though, I wouldn't chase them around online trying to communicate. It starts looking a bit stalker-ish. 🤔
DeleteI agree with you about commenting and also about bloggers/vloggers stopping when they wish. I sometimes have to comment as anonymous and I can’t seem to change it. I read a few blogs and try always to be positive when I comment. My late Yorkshire father in law used to say “If in doubt, say nowt” and I think that’s sound advice. Catriona
ReplyDeleteYour father in law's advice is very good. Yes, you comment as Anonymous Catriona but you ALWAYS sign your name and that is very appreciated.
DeleteYes, I too am an anonymous commenter who signs my name. Agree with all the above. It's a privilege to share parts of bloggers/vloggers lives, interests, thoughts and feelings and we have to expect that for whatever reason from time to time writers will pull the plug - their choice to make.

Yes, exactly that Alison. Thank you for always signing off your comments. ❤️
DeleteWell said, Sue.
ReplyDeleteThank you. 🙂 x
DeleteI was really sad to see Tania has had a terrible time with commenters. I didn't see the actual comments at the time but I know the rough gist. Someone asked me if I had her details so they could check on her. I do hope that was an innocent question but you never know. When you put yourself up for public viewing you do have to have a thick skin. For some reason these trolls seem to find and zone in on vloggers who are kind hearted and try to respond to them or reason with them. I just delete and block them as does Frugal Queen and don't give them a second thought. Ali xxx
ReplyDeleteI always hope these questions are innocent, but you never know do you. You and Jane do exactly the right thing. Hopefully Allie will pick up on this way of dealing with any nastiness too. 😀
DeleteI watch a few You Tube channels. There's been one vlogger in particular who's had various rants about her fellow vloggers in an unpleasant way. Not nice! Old enough to know better!
ReplyDeleteSorry, not anonymous - It's mrs lh here. No idea why it's anonymous.
DeleteDefinitely old enough to know better. 🙂
DeleteThanks for coming back to leave your name, it just shows how easy it is to be polite. ❤️xx
DeleteI watched a video last week in which some of the frugal channels that i watch were very nastily slated. Appalling behaviour from a fellow vlogger. The video has since been removed, but sadly the damage has already been done.
DeleteWell if it was removed the person putting it up has obviously realised just how out of touch they were with their own audience, no doubt they were slated in their own comment section.
DeleteWe seem to live in a time were it's hard to live and let live to a lot of people. Hopefully the damage to that channel is greater than that to others.
A blog or Youtube channel is a individual's choice to stop, start or share. It is so sad and uncalled-for when people resort to that unpleasantness/nastiness. Would they say such things to the person's face? It is one of the worst things about the internet that people have anonymity and think they can get away with such behaviour. On the whole, I would hope that the majority of people who comment are supportive and kind.
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense to be careful with contact details - you never know whether someone may have an ulterior motive.
Best wishes
Ellie
The vast majority of people that comment on blogs and YouTube videos are really kind and want to do nothing but support the person they are communicating with. But sometimes fifty lovely comments can be really overshadowed by one that cuts to the quick and intimidates you. As Ali says you need to have a thick skin these days to put yourself out there online. And even those with a thick skin can have sad days where a wrong remark can really hurt.
DeleteI have read all the comments. It was me who posted about Tania and wondering how to get in touch with her. I can assure you I had no ulterior motive other than to wish her well and thank her for her videos which she obviously had put so much effort into. I feel very badly for her that "trolls" caused her so much upset that she had to quit her channel. I really didn't think to sign my name but I will in future. Of course, I would respect her right to privacy ...it truly was an innocent wish to perhaps lift her spirits by letting her know how much I enjoyed her videos. I appreciate all the feedback and will be respectful in future by leaving my name.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn S
Thank you for getting in touch. ❤️
DeleteIt is a relief to know that your request was an innocent one. However, I imagine that the best thing for Tania at the moment is for her to be left alone, so she can contemplate her future on YouTube. It has to be on her own terms, with no influences that might make her sway in a direction that she does not want to go in.
Again, thank you, and thanks for leaving your name. 🙂
I agree, Sue and I wish her all the best. I enjoy your blog so much. Thank you!

DeleteWell said, Sue, I liked Tania. I've had quite a few horrid and unnecessary comments on my blog, and I get why ... that doesn't give people the right to be so judgemental though. Usually I just bin them and don't comment - a few times though when I've been in the grip of depression they've really hurt. I've also sometimes had people saying they've googled services in my local area - I know they're probably trying to be helpful, but to me that comes across as a bit creepy and vaguely stalkerish.
ReplyDeleteIt very hard not to take everything personally isn't it, especially on 'down' days. People digging into the area where you live, even with the best intentions can definitely feel quite stalkerish. 😳
DeleteI don't think I ever watched that particular channel but it's sad that she feels she has to give it up because of a few nasty people. People disappear from blogging and you tube channels sometimes without saying anything and i do wonder sometimes why they decided to give up and if they are ok. From the sounds of it she just wants a complete break now. Glad you got a reply from the anonymous comment and that she sounded genuine.
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising how a few nasty or negative comments can really upset you if you are already slightly out of kilter.
DeleteIt was really good that my original commenter has now clarified her innocent intentions. The sign of a good person. 🙂
I haven't watched much youtube, it takes way too much time, I like reading blogs. But I have problem with commenting on blogs. In some blogspot- blogs I can comment as I am, Ulvmor, but for some reason in most blogspot- blogs I cannot do that. I can't sign in - even when I'n signed in in other blogs in the same browser!
ReplyDeleteAnd being scatterbrainer me I sometimes forgot to sign my comment.
And being me I cannot understand why to be nasty and mean, when you just can be silent, no comments?
Ulvmor
Yes, commenting on blogs, even those where you used to get in just fine can be very hit and miss at times. It's the reason I do allow Anonymous comments as long as they are signed at the end. It's nice to know who you are speaking to. 😀
DeleteLate to the party, sorry (busy day) I don't really follow any vloggers. But I do struggle with anonymous commenters - and appreciate friends like Catriona and Alison who sign off by name at the end of their comment . And whilst it is sad sometimes if a person stops publishing, that's entirely their choice. But really sad if they stop because of unpleasant trolling. You can hold a different opinion, but there is no need to be nasty. Here's to the kind people out there 👍❤️
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. Happily the kind people vastly outweigh the ones being nasty for no apparent reason.
DeleteI just can not understand how people can be so mean. As you say both bloggers and vloggers are sharing their lives with all of us and we should definitely be appreciative.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It takes nothing from us all to be nice to fellow humans does it. ❤️
DeleteGood reminder to be polite including when giving up a blog. I'm afraid I left on a bit of a cliffhanger but I've since been able to re-connect with some of my small band of followers. I've recently returned to blog world and dipped my toe into a gentle expansion of my reading list. I've been seeing your comments on JGs blog (I hung on to him despite life beating me up) and Codlins... liked what I was seeing and nipped over to have a look. I'm particularly enjoying your posts for the weekend. They are a nice distraction from the daily grind.
ReplyDeleteI've been known to vanish, seemingly without warning from my own blogs at times. But I have always gone back with an explanation. 🙂
DeleteI've been friends with John for years, both in blogland and in person, especially when we lived nearer to him in Wales. Clicking on the links above comments is a good way to find like-minded people isn't it.
I followed Tania and really enjoyed her vlogs! I loved her sassiness and common sense. I learnt quite a lot! I totally respect her decision to stop. In case you are reading this Tania, I would like to say a huge thank you for sharing parts of your life for these few months. Carastel
ReplyDeleteI don't honestly think she reads this latest blog of mine, but she did follow all my previous ones and I hers. It would be nice for her to see all this support for her. 🙂
DeleteAnd thank you for enabling this Sue! Carastel
Delete❤️ xx
DeleteMy father told us, if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all. I’m 76 so a long time ago, I have never forgotten that. Sandy from mid wales
ReplyDeleteOur parents instilled lots of memorable little sayings into us didn't they. They can help shape a better life. ❤️
DeleteI was so sorry to see that Tania has given up her YouTube channel. I really enjoyed watching it, and appreciated that, like Ali Lives Well on Less, she donated a percentage of her ad revenue to charity.
ReplyDeleteShe was very generous, yes like Ali. Both of them trying to help people in their own unique ways. She will be missed by many if she decides not to return. ❤️
DeleteI watched Tania's vlog from the very beginning too. She was entertaining, sensible and cheerful. It really annoys me that some awful person or persons made her life so stressful that she has had to close her vlog. She certainly didn't deserve that.
ReplyDeleteWell done on writing this very pertinent post, Sue, it...and the comments....say it all.
Angie x
I didn't know if I should write it really, but I am glad that I did. It has served a few purposes, one of which highlights how good the majority of blog readers and YouTube video watchers are.
DeleteI've never been afraid of sticking my head above the parapet, or saying what needs to be said in defence of friends. Perhaps that's one of the reasons trolls and titheads have never bothered me too much on my blogs, they get very short shrift, a few swear words and on one occasion traced and warned off.
Oh gosh, I missed this post. I never followed Tania closely, but the videos I have seen were lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is good that you have published your post because it highlights just what foulness total strangers seem to think they are allowed to sent to bloggers using the anonymity of the internet as a shield. I was fortunate when I blogged only to receive a small number of cruel comments, all of which I deleted because I saw no reason to give the Abuser* any more oxygen.
(* and yes, leaving comments such as you talk about is Abusive and if you spoke to someone like that IRL you would deserve all the subsequent fallout you received)
You're not too late to this particular party, I only did this post yesterday afternoon. It's good that we mostly all think along the same lines. That delete button is a very useful tool, and I hope Tania decides to come back and make full use of it in future.
