Small Kitchen Appliances

These are three of the six small kitchen appliances that I use the most often.  Seen here in action last night earning their keep and cooking my tea.  😀

Usually the rice cooker is kept in the drawer, the other small appliances not shown here, are my toaster, which kept on the little white drawer unit in a basket, my Nutribullet which lives in the cupboard under the sink and ...

... my small sized Kitchen Aid food processor, which also lives in the cupboard until I need to use it.

I don't have the space to leave them all out ready for action so it's just the things that are used every single day that are on the worktop.  The kettle ... what would life be without numerous cups of coffee over the course of the day ... and the Remoska which is used once or twice every day and which normally stands on the back of the hob, I only ever use the front part of the hotplate so it's perfectly safe there.

I did give an air fryer a try for a few weeks last year when my last Remoska broke and was unrepairable, but it didn't suit my style of cooking as well.  So that was sold on and that particular little dalliance ended.

What are your most used small kitchen appliances?

  1. The kettle! We don't really do appliances. There's a toaster that is stashed away in a cupboard and we use on a Sunday morning for toast and also lurking in the cupboard is a 1970s slow cooker which I've not used since the pandemic. x

    1. I remember when slow cookers were all the rage, I bought one and then never every used it. Someone got a real bargain at a car boot sale.

  2. I will echo Vix - the only kitchen "appliance" that I absolutely will not do without is my Bialetti Moka pot. I do not have any others.

    1. I had to Google that, I didn't realise that's what they are called. I have often been tempted to buy one, but just never got around to it. As I'm mostly a Nescafe girl there's no rush, and I just enjoy 'proper coffee' when we are out and about.

    2. I have to confess to having two of those pots - the other is (of course) in the van.
I only have coffee once a day, so I had better make it a good one 😉

And has Kirsten quite rightly pointed out - the microwave, which I am afraid I think of as essential as the oven and fridge so did not fall into the 'appliance' category for me.

    3. I didn't consider the microwave either, so I actually have two more gadgets after reading all these comments. The microwave, and my stick blender ... which is hidden from view and mind in a drawer. 😄

  3. In order; Air fryer, microwave and kettle every day, Kettle and toaster most days, and the slow cooker, stick blender and minimagimix also get an occasional turn.

    1. Oh, I forgot my microwave, it's mostly used for reheating my coffee when I forget about it so I should have remembered, it's usually about four times a day!!

  4. The kettle, the toaster. I make bread every other day, so the breadmaker is often in use. Less in the summer, but in the winter the slocooker is in regular use. And I warm plates in the microwave. But we are blessed with solar panels, and storage batteries, so have plenty of electricty.

    1. I miss the luxury of solar panels and battery back-up, hopefully we'll have them again when we move.

  5. Breadmaker weekly. Blender once in a while. Don't use a kettle, I boil up a mugful of water in a little French enamel pan. I have a stick blender - but never use it. My girls do sometimes. Microwave used regularly. Toaster once in a while. Slow cooker mostly in the winter. I cook my rice in a saucepan. Didn't know there was a gizmo for it!

    1. I guess if I were to downsize even more a pan could be used for boiling water for my coffee, or even just putting a mug in the microwave would be cheaper than boiling the kettle. I may have to try that as Alan has just turned into the 'Electricity Police' with the installation of our new and finally fully functioning Smart meters. He came dashing over yesterday to ask what I was doing as we had gone from using 2p per hour to 7p per hour!!

  6. We have quite a fair sized kitchen so have a lot of things out, kettle, toaster, milk frother, microwave, airfryer, bread maker all of which we use all the time

    1. Gadgets are brilliant when you definitely have the need for them all aren't they. It's only when they are stuffed into cupboards and forgotten about that they're not earning their keep.

I was just thinking that I have never had a milk frother ... then I realised I never use milk. :-)

  7. We use the kettle almost daily, but more often in winter. The toaster is in use every day, as is the electric mill, which I use to grind flour from grains, rice, and pulses.
The microwave broke years ago and hasn't been replaced. We only use the coffee maker in winter, when it's too cold outside to cook with gas (outdoors).

    1. Yes, it's the kettle and toaster that are used the most in my kitchen. I use the Nutribullet to grind small amounts of grains and pulses as I have one of the original models that came with a grinding blade. It's obviously on a MUCH smaller scale than an electric mill though.

  8. Microwave- used often, Bread maker - once a week, toaster every day, coffee machine and frother everyday and the kettle if I have tea for a change from coffee - and I'll need a new one soon as it's going rusty. My Kenwood chef used less often now - and that's it - nothing else and that's two things more than I had 10 years ago!

    1. I'm sad to say Ken, my Kenwood chef is in one of Alan's kitchen cupboards and hasn't been used since we moved here. I am loathe to get rid of him though as he was brilliant for doing all the hard labour of bread making for me. One day he might be called back into action, I just have nowhere to keep him. :-(

  10. Keurig coffee maker is a must for breakfast, depending what I will be eating, toaster, microwave and the top of my kitchen stove are used. The kettle several times during the day for tea, and air fryer and crock pot used quite often.
As I look through all the comments, it is interesting to read all of the names of the appliances. I had to Google a couple of them to see what there purpose was.

  11. Hello Sue, I had a terrible attention fail three years ago,and laid my beloved Remoska's lid directly on the kitchen counter without switching it off. My usual place for the hot lid was on the cooker. I had had a particularly tiring day. I'd used it safely for over 12 years before that.
So, in case of future lapses I replaced it with a Ninja Foodi which has several functions including air fryer, slow cooker and, additionalky and most useful of all from my point of view, pressure cooker. With a substantial hearing loss, not having to watch for the hiss (which I couldn't hear) as with the old stove top pressure cookers, still feels like magic!
I use the Ninja Foodi a lot. It and my kettle (a repairable Dualit stainless steel model) are out on the worktop permanently. The Dualit is the most expensive electric kettle I've ever bought, but it's not needed a repair in over 12:years. A worthwhile investment.

    1. I always flip thd lid so that it's hot side up while it cools but I've still had little accidents, occasionally when the edge has touched something and melted it for instance. 😬

  12. I’m a sucker for a small kitchen appliance! However, since moving to a place with a lot less storage some gadgets have been sold or given away.
The smallest thing that I wouldn’t want to do without is a hot milk frother, the sort that has a tiny wire whisk on the end, runs on a couple of AA batteries. We do have a milk steamer on the coffee machine but the little frothing tool is so much easier and quicker and makes a lot less noise 😀

  13. We have a Breville toaster oven which is used multiple times a day, a slow cooker used frequently for beans mostly, a Zojurishi rice make used frequently, an Instapot used again mostly for beans or chicken broth,. the only thing out on the counter though on one side of the sink is the toaster oven. The other things are under a stainless steel island. On the left side of the counter is a coffee maker and my 40+ year old Kitchen aid. I'm not using that a lot these days as I'm not cooking up cookies or treats very often. I do use it to make pizza dough though.

  14. My Ninja air fryer is the most used appliance . When I had my kitchen updated about 9 years ago I had a boiling water tap fitted so no use for a kettle now.

    1. My sister in law has one of those boiling water taps, but I have to admit to preferring my kettle. 🤔

  15. Yeah I tried an airfryer, didn't get on with it so like you I sold it. I haven't got a big kitchen so other than the kettle I don't keep anything out. My toaster is in a drawer and other larger things are in the pantry.

  17. My coffee maker, the bread maker, the instant pot, the breakfast sandwich maker, the toaster, the yogurt maker and slow cooker are used the most. I do use the toaster oven, electric roaster, and the food processor, just not as much as the other items. My dehydrator while not used often during the year, works overtime right now, and the electric roaster gets put into use when we have Hubby's family for supper and I need more oven room.

    God bless.

  18. This is a fun post! I use my microwave, toaster oven, toaster, and rice cooker the most, I think. But, other small appliances are called into service from time to time, also. Now that my daughter is moving back home, she will be bringing down her air fryer and various other appliances, too, and we will have to figure out where to store them all!

  19. Hello Sue. I’m new to your blog and love reading it. Can I ask please what sort of things you cook in your Remoska pot? I’ve seen them and wondered how people use them. My most used kitchen gadgets are a big water urn so we don’t run out of hot water, my slow cooker and yogurt maker. Sue in Derbyshire x
