My finances are holding up quite well at the moment, the repayments from my son are helping as they are coming in regularly each week, he's lucky he gets paid weekly so finds things easier to manage that way. I have been really good with my spending overall so there will not be any huge credit card bill to pay off in full at the start of next month, and well just in general things are just working out as I hoped.
The cheap Easter veg that I picked up is lasting well and has really helped out with my almost non-existent budget, these are the two bunches of Spring Onions before they went into the fridge, a few are now missing but they still look really good, this is my favourite way of storing them, and it's what pint pots were made for. π
This is the only shopping that I needed this week.
I buy these bottles of sparkling water once every 4-6 months and then refill the bottles with the much cheaper Aldi sparkling water. Although our tap water is really good, and indeed I drink a lot of it at home, in the car I prefer to have sparkling water, and sometimes I drink it in the evening as well instead of a glass of wine.
Total spend here was £9.50 in Booths for the water and eggs, and 75p in Aldi for the buns.
I tried the rice that I bought from Aldi last week the other night.
I just served it really simply with a salt and pepper fish portion, also from Aldi. It made a very tasty meal. The portion size was just about right for me, I do like a lot of rice, and the vegetables in the rice were lovely, not at all mushy just a really good texture. I think I may buy it again, but I also think I will have a go at replicating it for myself.
I've been gathering in all my free birthday treats over the past couple of days and there are still more to come. When we called into Booths for the bit of shopping that we both did we went upstairs and I got my free birthday cake, this time Alan chose to have a scone. Yes, most of the places that give out the freebies don't have dairy-free options so he's doing quite well out of my birthday, at least he buys me the coffees. π
Sue xx
The spring onions look good, I'll have a go at seeing if I can find a way of storing mine like that without them tipping over.
ReplyDeleteMine have never tipped over, they usually sit on the top shelf of the fridge. All the weight is at the bottom really, the widest part of the onion and the water, so it's very secure.
DeleteI always remember your good tip about the onions. Agree that rice is tasty and makes a quick meal.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
It does keep them fresher for longer. π
DeleteOur tap water has a 'taste' but we use a water filter and that improves it considerably [and our tea doesn't have the scum we have noticed on cuppas at other local places] Our daughter bought us a Sodastream some years ago, and so we carbonate our own water. She got it because shefelt I did not drink enough, and it has certainly helped me up my water intake.
ReplyDeleteIt's awful when the water coming out of the taps tastes wrong isn't it. But I guess we are very lucky to have running water. So many people don't. π«€
DeleteOurs tastes nasty and has rust in it at times so its bottled that I use and need for the storm season. Raising my sparkling fizz to you in hopes you enjoy all those treats.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I once lived in a house with water like that. Seeing bits floating and then sinking in your water is just yuk isn't it. Really undrinkable and not even nice in the bath. π«€
DeleteSo that's how you store spring onions!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've done it this way for years. π
DeleteIs that basil I see hiding in the corner??? I can't seem to grow it in the house at all. Enjoy your birthday treats.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It is, just a supermarket plant. I've never been successful with it indoors either, and it's still too cold for it outside. It used to romp away in the polytunnel when we lived in Wales. π
DeleteLast July I purchased a pack of 4 charcoal water sticks from Amazon. One stick lasts for 6 months and it can be re-purposed as a fertilizer in the garden. Just fill up with tap water and pop a stick into your container, water now tasty wonderfulπ I'm wondering how much the eggs were Sue?
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good investment, and I love anything with more than one use. The eggs were £5 and the water £4.50.
DeleteI've adopted your way of storing spring onions! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. π
DeleteSounds like you are doing well with your minimal shopping. I went over my grocery budget already, this month, but, I'll make it up, next month.
ReplyDeleteSome months we just need more expensive things don't we. I'm very lucky that my store cupboard is still so full, so that helps. Eating out so much while we have been travelling and renovating has meant that not much has been touched. π
DeleteHaving that money coming in from your son every week must be a great help.
ReplyDeleteI love the Bisto pot you've got your basil in! xxx
It's only £25 a week, but it's been good timing while I wait for my first little pension payment on 1st May. It's just my Bisto tin, I'd used up all the granules so I thought I would temporarily make use of it. π
DeleteI love the chicken picture and what a beautiful wood frame. Our tap water here tastes just like mud, although it doesn't look muddy. So as I drink loads of water, I buy it in bottles, which I feel guilty about - all that plastic. I'll have to look into some sort of water filter thing.
ReplyDeleteWe used to use a water filter jug when we lived down south. I always felt guilty at throwing all the filters away, but I think they can be recycled now can't they. π
DeleteThe picture was a souvenir from a holiday in Clovelly.
