Easter Shopping and Cheap Veg

Alan was going to Aldi this morning, so I decided that I would go with him and take advantage of some of the cheap vegetables that the UK supermarkets are using as a loss leader to get the customers in this Easter weekend.

I decided to stock up a bit on fish for the freezer while I was there, and some lovely little marigolds seemed to have fallen into my trolley.

I don't know what made me buy these frozen rice bags really, but I thought they might be nice to try and I had never noticed them before.  At £1.99 for a bag of  four you are definitely paying for convenience.  I might have to do a side by side price comparison by making some golden vegetable rice for myself from the rice and frozen vegetables that I have already got in.

The downside to shopping early in the morning when the supermarket is nice and quiet is that you have time to browse the aisles!!

So of the £33.48 that I spent, only £1.24 went on the cheap Easter veg ... their naughty little ploy worked well didn't it. 😄

On both mine and Alan's receipts we were astonished to see that the potatoes that should have been 8p have gone through at only 4p.  Four pence for 2kg of potatoes ... I do hope that the farmers are not the ones paying for this ridiculous pricing of food.

  1. The broccoli in Aldi here was old and yellow! - I didn't buy any! and to make up for the cheap veg, their 4 pints milk had gone up 10p -

    1. Well that's not very good is it. Our Aldi's veg was lovely and fresh. I guess only having two small supermarkets in our town means they will be able to sell it all off each day. I've noticed a lot of price hikes recently. 🫤

  2. The owner of the corner shop told me about the 8p veg when I dropped a parcel off yesterday so I sent Jon down to Lidl to investigate and he came back with parsnips, carrots, broccoli spuds and green beans - plus beer, wine and nuts! x

    1. That's you nice and sorted for the Easter weekend then. If you've got parsnips you've just GOT to have beer and wine. :-)

  3. No such luck here in the US. I was pretty appalled at .68kg (1.5 lb) of red potatoes costing me the equivalent of £2.63. Two medium sized onions cost £1.17. Very depressing. Absolutely nothing cost only 8p. This was especially notable as I just returned from the UK where I was able to grocery shop for a lot less. Like you, however, I noticed a lot of significant price hikes here, as well. 450g of beef mince is now £7.80. Feel awful for young families. Can only imagine what costs will be when all the various tariffs hit in full. Thanks to the orange idiot. I did bring back a three month supply of my PG tips (cost only a fraction of what they cost here, even before new tariffs).

    1. Oh gosh, that's some very expensive onions!! I don't blame you for getting the PG Tips, at least they are relatively light in a suitcase. :-)

  4. Even though we have our food delivered we still pop to Tesco's now and then usually to top up on yogurts.. and we always manage to spend more than we planned.. that frozen rice looks rather nice.

    1. It does look nice doesn't it, maybe it was a clever packaging that caught my eye. :-)

  5. That is a crazy low price for those potatoes. I have really been trying not to put extras in the cart, but every so often something ends up being purchased that was not planned for.

    God bless.

    1. It's a ridiculous price for potatoes, it makes me wonder how long the supermarkets will keep doing this twice yearly, almost giveaway price for vegetables?

  6. Sounds like you found some wonderful bargains. You can't beat the price of those potatoes!

  7. I used to get that frozen rice to go as a "side" on occasion. I agree though, easy to make up yourself.

    1. It is a good little time saver, and it will go really well with the fish portions that I have bought. I might have a go at making a batch up for myself though, lot's of little homemade bags of frozen rice and veg would be so easy to do one day that I am in the mood to do it. :-)

  8. The Easter offer on vegetables was unexpected. I have stocked up on potatoes, parsnips and swede at 15p and carrots at 8p, and a lovely broccoli, 8p. I would freeze broccoli, but need the space for half price leg of lamb, £6.15 a kilo at Aldi, which will make three smaller Sunday roasts.
I wasn’t tempted by the over packaged, over priced Easter eggs. We will share a 100g bar of good dark chocolate, Asda Madagascan Fairtrade, £2.15.

    1. I only found out about it last week, on one of the Facebook groups that I am part of. :-)

  9. Our food in US is getting hideously expensive, and costs vary depending on region. Aldi's here tend to have better prices but the quality is not consistent. I hope you enjoy Easter.

    1. Both the US and Australia are really seeing a massive price hike in food prices aren't you. It's quite scary.

  10. We seem to be fortunate with the prices for food herein the UK, although I am concerned about the consequences of the 4p cheap veg for farmers...

    1. That is always the first thing on mine and Alan's minds after knowing so many farmers over the years.
