Is there anyone else out there that loves it when a sticker comes off a jar in one fell swoop?
I hate stickers of any sort with a vengeance, and I'm frequently found peeling them off things that Alan has bought, as well as anything that I buy. I have had to fight for years not to peel all the information stickers off my laptop ... but Alan says that is a huge no-go. The day it dies it's final death, not long to go now I fear, I will peel away with relish.
But jars, now that is a thing. If the sticker peels off in one go, or soaks off easily in a bowl of soapy water, I am loath to let go of what might be a very useful jar.
It seems I have a cupboard full of very useful jars.

And no, I don't have Pittakionophobia ... I just dislike stickers and the residue they leave on things.
Agree entirely about the stickers-the first one I always remove is the one from the rear windscreen of the car with the sellers logo on it. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one that does that. I had to pick away at each letter of the sticker on the car rear window when I first got it home. But it was so satisfying once it was off. 😀
DeleteI keep a stock of useful, pretty, jamjars too. They are good for leftover tinned food in the fridge, we have a couple of tinned prunes or apricots with breakfast so a tin lasts for several days. Small jars are useful for puddings on a picnic.
ReplyDeleteIt is satisfying when a label soaks or peels off easily.
The last trace of a sticky label comes off when dabbed with the sticky side of the rest of the label.
Labels which need soaking off respond when the bit of the wet paper label which does come off, is rubbed on the remaining bits.
Yes, I do the dabbing thing with the rest of the label if I really want to keep a jar with a stubborn label. Then the last resort is 'sticky stuff remover. I hate that thick line of glue that is sometimes on jars. 🫤
DeleteOh what another great word I have learned today (along with Catriona's Huntigowk) I am amused that you "peel away with relish" So often it is the pickle jars that are the worst!. But easy peelers which leave behind a perfect rectangle of sticky goo are a bit annoying. I'm sure that when I first got into Jan making (ok, half a century ago) You could leave jars in soapy water overnight, and then two minutes with a brilliant pad in the morning and they were clean...
ReplyDeleteAldi big pickle and beetroot jars are great. The labels just float off. 😀
DeleteOh yes, the ones that leave a whole area of sticky mess are awful, they have to be very special jars to avoid just going into the recycling bin.
Have you tried filling empty dry jars with hot water and leaving them a minute or two to melt the glue so you can peel the labels off easily? Or filling them with cold and putting them in the microwave? Very satisfying peeling experience!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried the microwave method ... yet!! 😄
DeleteI'm the same way with labels. I must have them off. Ikea's labels come off relatively easy on their bins and stuff. I like the Bonne maman jars the best!!
ReplyDeleteOoh, yes, they float off, there's just that little stubborn tab that's between the lid and the jar. 😀
DeleteThere's some very attractive jars going for free (complete with labels), aren't there? xx
ReplyDeleteOh yes, some great jars, full of tasty products. I make it my mission to find them. 😄
DeleteI haven't saved jars in a very long time. Mostly because I could never get all the silly label off. Perhaps it is time to start once again for storage purposes.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
They always come in handy for something don't they. 😀
DeleteI'm dealing with a very annoying small jar that has done 2 rounds in the dishwasher, soaked, scrubbed! I was tempted to throw it away but I'm not giving up,,,yet😂 I'm going to try Frugally Challenged tips using the microwave. With regards to stickly residue left on jars, I use lemon essential oil (a few drops) or Olive Oil (a few drops) I find it helps 🤞
ReplyDeleteI've been known to persevere that much for a particularly nice jar. 😄
DeleteI detest stickers on things especially on items not meant for them. I sent Mercy to board during our recent termite tenting and she returned a sticker queen. Stickers adorned her dishes, some toys and her litter box. I spent hours peeling and then had to get the glue off...not nice at all. If it ever happens again, I'll try the olive oil suggested here.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that must have been annoying. 🫤
DeleteI guess I am not the only one who feels the need to save just about every jar I come across. I have stopped saving the plastic peanut butter jars, though. But, I've got boxes of glass jars and some even get reused! LOL.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I've not had a plastic peanut butter jar for years. I am a bit better at purging my jars every now and then since I've had such a small kitchen and not much cupboard space. But like you I used to have boxes full. I sold them when we left Wales. 😀
DeleteI'm with you all on the sticker thing, they are so annoying. Jam from the local garden centre is in a lovely little jar with a thick label which peels off intact and cleanly. I put them through the dishwasher afterwards and keep them all 😊
DeleteLast year I worked with a lady at the elections who refused to wear her identity badge because it was a huge sticker! I'd never heard of that particular phobia before.

Ooh, I would have been itching to peel it off myself all day. Yay to the jam jars. 😀
DeleteI was just rearranging my collection of "useful jars" today! I am loathe to throw any out but it is getting a bit out of hand!
ReplyDeleteI do that occasionally, in the vain hope that I will be able to put some into the recycling and make some space in the cupboard ... it rarely works. 😄
DeleteThanks for introducing pittakionophobia to my vocabulary! I hate stickers - my bugbear is the residue they leave on my charity shop books. xxx
ReplyDeleteI do like learning a new word, even if I can barely pronounce it. 😄
DeleteOh yes, stickers that leave residue on books should be outlawed!!
