Going Back to Simplicity

Those of you who follow me on Facebook will have seen this image yesterday along with the message that I am now no longer on Instagram or Pinterest ... if you followed me on these too, I'm sorry but I really have vanished.
I simply decided that enough was enough, more than enough in fact, so I shared this message and the above photo:

Just in case anyone is wondering ... or has even noticed ... this morning I have deleted my Instagram account. Facebook is currently hanging on by the skin of it's teeth, but I am fed up of social media and all it's bombardment of bad news, fake news, vitriol and adverts. I am stepping back to simplicity and it feels good. You'll probably find me in the corner with a book.

It was nice to almost immediately get so many private messages from family and friends saying that they completely understood.  It seems that we are all getting fed up with adverts, AI generated posts and the proliferation of keyboard warriors.

At this rate I'll be living in a log cabin in the woods, eschewing all modern conveniences and inventions.  😃

Sue xx

  1. I don't blame you, Sue. I recently dipped my toe into Facebook, but with all the fake adverts, potential scams, and general unpleasantness, I have decided it is not for me. I'm sticking with Blogger and Instagram only, from now on. Unless you know of a spare cabin... Xx

    1. I spend just a few moments a day on Facebook these days, checking my 'Memories' and seeing if family and friends have posted anything. As you say it's now mostly adverts and unpleasantness.

  2. Sometimes, one has to step back to regain some normalcy, I think. Especially, these days.

  3. The only facebook stuff I look at is the village groups from round the area - they are handy for information and there and blogland are the only places to find me.

Your re read of Garden Cottage Diaries must have nudged the simplicity button! Do you remember 'Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot and her shack in the woods. (just looked and it's £20 now!)

    1. Yes, I do check our local two pages but even on those just recently there has been so much bickering and snide comments.

Yes, the Garden Cottage Diaries and my current book are inspiring me ... I am being refuelled with simplicity yearnings. I read Gaining Ground a couple of years ago, then passed it on to someone as I didn't get on that well with her style of writing but the basis of the book was good.

  4. I stay on FB as I post about my crafting p, motorhoming and food. I only joined 10 years ago when my daughter was travelling in the States and it. Ea t I could see her photographs. Too many cowardly keyboard warriors out there who can make it a very u kind place at times. Catriona

    1. They really do don't they. So many people hide behind their perceived anonymity, there was one girl who called out all the men who criticised her weight and looks by tracking them down on social media and sharing their photos for the world to see, they were not the prettiest people at the party by a long shot. Now THAT was satisfying to see.

  5. I haven't looked at Facebook in months; the last time was enough for me. I might as well delete my account.

    1. I was very tempted yesterday, but then my grandson shared photos of my new great grandson and I realised why I keep it.

  6. I do not blame you, I am thinking of doing the same.

  7. I have never had any type of social media account and don't feel that I have missed anything. Although I sometimes look at Pinterest for ideas for creative things, especially when I worked as a Teaching Assistant and needed fresh ideas for cards and craft projects for the children I worked with and my craft club group.
I love reading blogs however I don't have my own blog.

    1. Pinterest does have it's place for inspiration for teachers and crafters, but even on there adverts started creeping in far too much for my liking. I love blogs in general, well I guess I have to say that I've had one since 2008. 😄

  8. I'm totally with you on the simplicity front Sue. We are trying to move to an area where we can downsize and simplify our lives. Less stuff more joyful experiences and more animals.

    1. The less you have to tie you down the better. Believe it or not, I'm still decluttering my stuff. It's slower these days but whenever I find something I haven't been using it goes. 😀

  9. I don't blame you at all. I don't do any of it apart from writing my blog and reading blogs.

  10. Agree, I gave up instagram years ago and pretty sure FB will be going the same way very soon. It really isn't the useful, friendly thing that it was and all those links and reels drive me nuts.

    1. Yes, there's far too much movement and advertising on the screen all the time now. I wish there was some way to simplify it.

  11. I don't do Instagram at all but i do use Facebook for a few groups I belong( cancer) which are very helpful. i love the cabin in the woods, although I have lived that way once and wouldnt want to go back:)

    1. There are some good groups on Facebook, you just have to pick and choose wisely don't you. 🙂

  12. I totally understand your motivation. I only do Facebook to check on local events or council news. The rest is so unpleasant to read that I don't bother. Instagram, twitter (X) or pinterest have never interested me enough to look at them. Blogland is a bit iffy sometimes too. What a sad world this is becoming.

Many congratulations on the birth of your new Great Grandson ! I must have missed this post somehow! You see....there CAN be good news sometimes :)

  13. I don't do any of those things, this is as close as I get to dallying with social media, and I only read and comment on a few blogs that I find interesting. I loathe Facebook, it is such a poor product that it irritates me that it has been so successful.
I have a Office 365 family subscription - I buy 15 month deals and add them on via my Microsoft account. If anyone has forgotten camelcamelcamel is a useful site for getting notifications of amazon price drops. We use albums in Microsoft OneDrive to share photos and that keeps it simple and private. I am very wary of free software, there's often a privacy price that I'm not prepared to pay.

    1. Facebook started so well, as a tool to link friends and family, sadly it's gone downhill ever since. I'm not keen on Microsoft, so I keep as much as I can away from there.

  14. I left Facebook 5 years ago - I allowed it to dictate my day. When I deleted my account it took me 30 days or do of Facebook withdrawals. But I stuck with it. I’m so much happier without it. A big time waster for me.
That first photo is dreamy! I’d love to sit there, writing ✍️

There is life after Facebook And it’s a good one!

    1. Haha ... I am just about discovering that there is also life after Instagram. 😄

It's a gorgeous photo isn't it, I want to find a little table like that one.

  15. Good for you! I have a secret Pinterest account where I create boards when I pack for holidays which none can access except for myself. I stopped using Instagram in 2020 and haven't been near Twitter for over a decade.
I do use Facebook, there's some really useful groups I belong to and I like being able to chat with old friends and blog readers. The adverts drive me mad! xxx

    1. I stopped using Twitter around the same time as you, I'm getting over stopping Instagram now and I think Facebook will be something that I check in on briefly just twice a day. The adverts have ruined it. I don't have notifications on my phone for it, so I am using it on my terms not when it beeps and tells me to.

  16. I never signed up for FaceBook and tried Instagram for a bit until the ads were taking over. I think I still have Pinterest but hardly ever visiti.

  17. Well done you, but PLEASE don't stop blogging, xx
I refuse to use FB or Twitter. I confess to an Instascam account because there are some lovely quilting people I follow, but the Ads and influencer accounts are a pain in the wotsit.
Nothing wrong with a simple life - I have been away in the van for the last three weeks and it has been quite lovely.

  18. I struggle with Instagram and have to keep cutting down the number of accounts I follow as it can become very time consuming if they put stories up. Just as well I don't have Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest. I'm a creature of habit and love to read blogs. A log cabin in the woods reminded me about one such home I loved on YouTube "Thoreauvian simple living: unelectrified, timeless tiny home" you may have already seen it Sue although some of your readers may find it very interesting, peaceful and calm.

    1. Instagram really does eat up time doesn't it, it's as bad as TikTok which I deleted last year. What a coincidence, I watched that YouTube video last week. 😀
