I was asked by a blog reader about the charity book table that I buy from, and donate to, in our local Booths Supermarket Well it was nice and quiet in there this morning when I called in to get Alan a bottle of milk so I took a quick photo.
It's not always this full, indeed at the start of the Bank Holiday weekend it was very depleted. But usually when this is the case, a lovely townsperson will go through their own book collection and donate some books.
I am in the habit of tidying up the books as I look through them, as are a few other people. I am being very particular these days and I have definitely donated more books than I have bought. There is a poster on top of the boxes telling you which the current charity is, it usually changes each month and they are always local good causes. The poster also suggests a donation of £1 per book. Some people give more and some give less, so I suppose it balances itself out. You just pop your cash in the yellow collecting box on the far right of the photo.
I called round to the bungalow as usual at lunchtime with Alan's dinner, I've been doing this every day while he has been so busy, as well as cooking his evening meals.

So much has happened so quickly. Alan had spent the morning doing the plumbing for the kitchen water heater which is in the corner cupboard to the right of the window, while the kitchen fitter got all the base units in place, then Alan switched to the floor tiling in his bedroom, he's changed his mind about having carpet in there. It's all starting to come together very nicely.

We're really happy with it. Happily it's the same kitchen fitter that did my current kitchen, so he sort of knows what the handmade part that is that he's having to build from scratch needs the look like.
DeleteWow—that man can work! I also tidy the charity book stall whenever I am in a shop with one. Norrie is currently tearing out decking he used to build a continuous planter at the side of the house as it has rotted. He then discovered the previous log wall in behind which had also rotted! New planks are coming tomorrow so fingers crossed it all goes well. I’ve just made an appointment at the dump so that he can take up the wood and all the plants he pulled out-think it will take se eral runs to get it done, Catriona
ReplyDeleteOh, what shame, did you line it? We always line the sides of our raised beds and planters with a double layer of membrane, it extends the life of the wood a bit, but is still water permeable when it has to be. We are thinking of brick built beds this time, as Alan fancies a bit of brick laying to add to his skills. 😀
DeleteIt is lined thank goodness so the soil will hold while the new edges go on. Brick would be lovely and definitely longer lasting. We actually wanted sleepers but they are too heavy for us to lift niw and we were let down by the person who was supposed to come and do it,

DeleteIt must have saved you so much money having Alan doing all the jobs he is able to. Your kitchen will be lovely when it's done. What tiles have you chosen? Lots to chose from on the charity bookshelf.
ReplyDeleteWe could not have afforded to do this without Alan being able to do so much of the physical stuff, both for himself and labouring for the professionals. The floor tiles are the ones in the photos, there are no wall tiles for the kitchen it is going to have the same splash-back as my current kitchen, which is just a thinner version of the worktop. Alan has always liked it ... and I don't think he could face laying any more tiles, he still has the bathroom ones to do.
DeleteAn uncarpeted floor in the bedroom sounds cold! I guess Alan could get some area rugs. Everything is coming together nicely, and the book table is a great idea. Our urban grocery stores are all way too small for anything like that, unfortunately, but the St. John's Wood library has some book sale carts parked in front.
ReplyDeleteWe have underfloor heating in the bungalow, or will have very soon, so the tiled floor will be lovely and warm in Winter and nice and cool in Summer.
