The Cupboard Under the Stairs

Not that I have too many at the moment.

But poor Alan after supposedly retiring back in February is still working through the last of our final contract ... and without pay!!

The company he works for had very kindly paid him upfront for our final contract so that we could set the wheels in motion to legally close down our limited company.  But then more and more has had to be added to the workload, and now because he is an honourable man and a lot of it is teaching people how to do the work that he used to do, he is ploughing through it.

Thank goodness my side of things is all done and dusted.

With Alan being away this week and me having no dogs to walk, talk to or look after it has felt very strange.  Ginger is not quite the companion that Mavis was.  His needs are few and very simple, and he has taken to sleeping in the cupboard under Alan's stairs so I'm not even seeing that much of him ... although it is lovely and cool in there so I could join him.  😁

The photo of Ginger is an older one ... he's not around for me to photograph at the moment!!

  1. I have a cupboard under the stairs here but it has a door and I keep "stuff" in it - far too much "stuff"!!

    1. You're lucky your mischievous cats don't sneak in. 😀

  2. Good to have an honourable man at your side - cherish him [and feed him cake in Booths on a regular basis] I do hope this contract is all sorted soon

    1. Between the cake and the bacon butties at Booths he's doing very well. A couple more trips down South, one to Cumbria and then a bit more computer stuff to round everything off, and he should be completely free by mid-September.

  3. Sorry to hear about Alan's continued workload what a flaming nuisance. Perhaps you may consider adopting another pup? They do have a smashing life with you two.

    1. No dogs for us for at least another year or so, and no cats after we lose Ginger. We want to have some time for holidays without having to rely on family for pet sitting. The idea of being able to go away at the drop of a hat, or just stay away from home on a whim is very appealing.

  4. Would you consider adopting another pup, or do you feel you have "done your bit" with dogs? I can understand that there is a big difference between Ginger and a dog!!

    1. There will be no dogs for us for at least another year or so, and no cats after we lose Ginger. We want to have some time for holidays without having to rely on family for pet sitting, my sons don't live close and they work full time with limited holidays and pets of their own. The idea of being able to go away at the drop of a hat, or just stay away from home on a whim is very appealing.

    2. I know exactly what you mean!! We're in our 60s now, although financially better off than our younger days, we are very much tied down with 5 pets!! This puts spontaneity at zero! The 2 rabbits are 9, the cat is 13, one dog is 16 and the other is 2. I calculated a week in boarding for them all but at almost £1000, it makes for an expensive week's holiday. We used to regularly take one dog on hols, but things are harder now.

    3. It always seems so hard-hearted to plan for a future without pets when you still actually have them, but we have been for a while. We knew with their very similar ages that we would lose them all within a short space of time of each other, and I think we needed the consolation of something at least to look forward to.

Your pets are good ages and perhaps in the not too distant future only the cat will need to be boarded, and then the younger dog could come with you on some travels.

    4. Forgot to add that 3 of the 5 pets are rescues who found their way to us!! The 16 year old dog was inherited from my late MIL. I must be a soft touch!!

    5. There's nothing wrong with being a soft touch where animals are concerned. ❤️

Ginger was a temporary foster cat and Mavis a double rescue. 🐱🐕

  5. I so understand your decision about more pets. As you know I'm a fellow (?) animal lover but we have health problems going on......one serious...... with both our two young beloveds at the moment and I can't help thinking about a time in the future when we won't have the worry and distress.......I hope that doesn't sound selfish, I love them, probably too much if that's possible.

    1. I know exactly what you mean Alison, and it's not selfish at all.

We have told ourselves that we will have one or two years off from pets and then re-evaluate the decision. In the meantime we are staying away from animal rescue sites and venues, you know what we're like ... we'll come back with a pair of dogs that just HAD to be rescued!!

  6. We decided on no more cats a year or so before the last two, sisters, died. They were about 19 when we lost them at the end of 2022 and we hadn't been able to board them or get cat-sitters for some years as they were very frail; tiny meals four times a day in their last year! The freedom to book time away (now I'm not bound by school dates as well) is wonderful.
I doubt it would remain cool in the cupboard under the stairs with both you and ginger crammed in there!
