There's Nothing Frugal Here ...

March came in with a bit of a whimper after our February went out in such an awful style.  We needed time to regroup, rethink and just be.  The sun came out yesterday and reminded me of this famous Charles Dickens quote, as it really was Winter in the shade and Summer in the sun.

The washing blew itself dry in a couple of hours, a chilly wind is almost as good as a warm wind for clothes on the line.  After a morning coffee sat outside in the sunshine Alan helped me to hang my new curtains.

I'm pleased with them, really pleased.

Which is such a relief as they have cost me my whole final months salary.  So much for my plan to use my last three pay packets wisely and make them last as long as possible.

Sometimes you just have to do what makes your heart sing.

They replace these curtains which I bought ready made from Dunelm when we moved into this property four years ago.  I felt a smidge of guilt replacing them so soon but it didn't last long.  😊

I felt much less guilt replacing the bedroom curtains.

They have been with us since we moved into our Oxfordshire farmhouse back in 2009 and they have done sterling service in each of our properties since, but now it was time to let them go.

Now both my rooms match, and when the bedroom door is open it's lovely to see my lovely new curtains almost side by side.

And of course the old curtains have now been listed on FB Marketplace, so maybe there is just a little bit of frugality still involved.

  1. Lovely when we get things we really want, sometimes we just have to swallow the cost. The new vertical blinds we're getting for the kitchen and lounge (both of which are pretty big windows) are most likely going to cost us an arm and a leg, but I'm just so fed up with the nets, I'm not a fan of nets anyway, they look so untidy.

    1. The good side to having these lovely new curtains is that they will easily cover any French doors we put into our next property, so they will be made good use of. I do have to have my voiles up at the windows as I have such a huge expanse of glass that is completely overlooked by the houses to the side of us. I feel like I'm in a goldfish bowl with them down. Alan has vertical blinds in every room of his house, but I just don't like them at all. I used to like venetian blinds but they get so dusty don't they.

    1. It makes such a difference having them matching as the bedroom door is virtually always open.

  3. I think the new curtains are so pretty and fresh. I'm eyeing up our bedroom ones; cheap was definitely NOT frugal as the fabric has shredded in the sun.

    1. Time for a spot of shopping for you methinks. Go on ... treat yourself, I'm so glad that I did. :-)

  4. As you have proved just how long good curtains can last then this little bit of 'non-frugal' will prove to be a good investment (and decent quality curtains will help insulate in winter so you might save a little money on heating ☺︎).

    1. Yes, they will be made good use of when we move as well as here. I have had them lined with thermal lining so it should be cosy in Winter and keep some of the heat out in Summer.

  5. Sometimes, it's good to splurge on some new curtains that bring you happiness when you look at them. :)

  6. I keep looking for new curtains for my sewing/craft room and the hallway. Nothing has struck my fancy. Yours are gorgeous.

    God bless.

    1. It took me a while to choose this fabric, but I'm happy with my choice now and pleased that I didn't rush into anything.

  7. The new curtains are lovely and well worth the cost if you love them too. They should last an age. I love the little chest of drawers on your window ledge :)
The Charles Dickens quote was so true of yesterday here. Beautifully warm in the sun but ditheringly cold in the shade. It did dry my washing too!

    1. I guess for the happiness value they are worth the cost, it just seemed such a huge amount of money to lay out. I think I am 'almost' over the shock now though. The little chest has been with me for ten years now, it was the year we all had a budget of £50 to buy ourselves a Christmas present instead of buying something for each other. We had a 'show and tell' on Christmas day at my Mum's. Happy memories right there on the window sill. :-)

  8. Good curtains are well worth the cost, I think. They add immeasurably to the look and feel of a room. Fingers crossed the old ones sell well and quickly. xx

    1. It was a huge splurge, but they will be the right size for any future French windows we have in another property, so will be well used. They make the place look so much fresher and lighter ... and of course they are green. :-)
