Bargains ... and a Surprise Find

I was shopping for some chicken for Mavis and milk for Alan the other day, but I took the time to wander around Sainsbugs as I had time to spare, and it was raining hard outside and I had no desire to get soaked walking back to the car.

Anyway I spotted a few of my favourite things and all these were on offer, so I decided to have a little stock up.

These tissues should do me well into hayfever season and perhaps even beyond.  The Linda McCartney 1/4lb burgers are the best meat-free burgers on the market in my opinion.  They satisfy that occasional urge for something not too vegetable-y, and with sliced onions piled on top, lots of tomato ketchup, a lettuce leaf and tucked into a nice big bun make for a delicious evening meal  No chips needed, they are filling!!

I've not had the pies for a long time, so it will be a bit of an experiment to see if they are still as good as I remember them.  I do remember that a 'soggy bottom' was usually the only thing wrong with them, so I'll be heating a tray in the oven before they get put in there.  I mean, no-one wants a soggy bottom!!

The Quorn Smoky Ham-Free slices are what I occasionally use either on a salad sandwich or fried in a little olive oil they make a lovely 'bacon butty'.

Now while I didn't save the receipt to give you the exact prices, I did make a note on the photo that all together these should have cost me £26.40, but with the special offers with my Nectar card I spent only £16.80, so a £9.60 saving.

Definitely not to be sneezed at. 🤧

I've found all sorts of things whilst I have been sorting out at Mums, the other day looking through the last couple of photograph albums I came across photos of Mum and Dad's American holidays, including this particular one that I had never seen.

We have relatives in Chicago, Illinois and they went to stay with them for a while before journeying on to Las Vegas ... where they got married for the third time, a whole other story!!   Anyway when they came back they brought us all souvenirs from a White Sox game that they went to with the relatives.  So of course we had to pose for a photograph in Mum and Dad's garden on our next visit to them.

The boys were thrilled with their gifts, much more thrilled than perhaps Simon's expression on this particular photo would lead you to believe.  😄

  1. Love the photo of the boys when they were younger. I’ve discovered I can’t eat soya in any form and I need to have bean or vegetable burgers. Let’s hope we don’t need the hankies very soon for our hayfever but I reckon it will be next month I’ll start with the tree pollen. Have a nice weekend. Catriona

    1. It's a great photo isn't it, I've worked out that I'm around 31 there, and my ex-husband 36, which makes Mum a bit younger than I am now. A real blast from the past. There's quite a lot of people that are sensitive to soya aren't there, luckily I am okay with it, although I am sensitive to sesame, which I only found out recently.

  5. I'd forgotten about the LMcC burgers, I was buying them for a while, then switched to the Aldi veg burgers, neither in the freezer at the moment - I'm waiting to do a shopping 'haul'!

    1. These burgers are lovely aren't they, even carnivorous Alan thinks they are great. They are about as close to a meat texture as I can tolerate. 🙂

  6. Wow! - you look so much like your mum!!
Another one who can't tolerate soya here - I was always super sensitive to its phyto-oestrogens and not in a good way!
Have you tried Fry's 'burgers' or other products? - even my 'can't eat a meal unless it contains meat' husband who avoids vegan/ veggie meals (I think it's the result of being brought up in a house where they ate a lot of lentils/ bulghar wheat etc when he was young due to a lack of money and his mum was an 'interesting' cook...) thinks they're great.

    1. I do don't I, but there's only 20 years between us too. Weirdly I also look like my Dad, but as they were occasionally mistaken for brother and sister it's not too surprising. 😄

I haven't tried many Frys's products as they don't seem to that available in the supermarkets in our town. ☹️

  7. A price increase, fewer tissues in the boxes, and they get thinner too.
I posted a dozen unused, vintage handkerchiefs to my sister for her birthday. Pretty things, hand embroidered linen and cotton, British made with good hems which will last for years. They can be found for pennies on eBay.

    1. Thanks for highlighting that, I thought it was my imagination that made me think they were thinner tissues now. They definitely are!!

Vintage hankies are lovely aren't they. I used to buy them and turn them into lavender envelopes, to be popped into drawers and cupboards, or just hung on dressing tables. ❤️

  8. The old photo is lovely and you look so young for 31!
I still buy the Linda McCartney pies occasionally but do struggle to avoid the 'soggy bottom ' issue. I've started using the airfryer, turning the temperature down a little and cooking them for 5 minutes longer than in a standard oven. Of course it does depend on the power rating of an airfryer as to timing, and I know you sold your airfryer so this doesn't help you 🙄 Why am I waffling on? 😂
BTW no idea why I'm suddenly anonymous again 🤔

    1. I do don't I, oh to turn back time but know what I know now. 😄

The only answer to the soggy bottom in an oven, is to stand the pie on a piping hot tray from the start of cooking. Maybe in an airfryer you could carefully turn the pie upside down for the last couple of minutes.
