Rhubarb, Rhubarb, Rhubarb

 


I picked another huge amount of rhubarb last week, this is the third big harvest this year.  

The first picking went into crumbles which we mostly ate straight away, the second was gifted to my sister-in-law when they visited a couple of months back as her and her fiancé both love rhubarb, and now I have this batch. 


This time I stewed it and portioned it up to share between us.  We ended up with five of these takeaway containers each for our freezers.


Once mine had cooled four went into the freezer and the other went into the fridge.


I am still keeping up with my new breakfast routine of one weetabix served with some sort of fruit, and then a fried or poached egg on toast a bit later,  It was an amazing revelation just how well rhubarb pairs with weetabix.

Looking at the plants this morning I would think an equally big harvest will be on the cards next week.  Just giving the plants a bit more space by harvesting the last lot has really brought it on even though it is getting much cooler, especially at night, now.

Just one last harvest to complete the season I think, and hopefully this will see me through a quite a few more servings of rhubarb for my breakfast over the next few months, as I will alternate it with tinned peaches and the occasional banana.

I need to make the homegrown Summer-y goodness last as long as possible.

  1. A small bowl of porridge for me, with a spoonful of stewed apple. Scrambled egg with courgette and mushrooms.

  3. I’m a complete fan of the takeaway boxes with snap shut lids and see through sides for storing food in the fridge and freezer but my nerdiness won’t allow a stray box that doesn’t match the lids!
    Out it goes ( to a charity shop, with its own lid of course )

    1. These takeaway boxes are great aren't they, and I'm trying to remember to label everything clearly. Happily the permanent marker that I use actually washes off the boxes quite well ready for re-use.

  5. I love rhubarb, which I've probably mentioned here before 😉 When I'm feeling pushed for time I just chop it up and freeze it raw in usable portions in poly bags - brilliant stuff and lasts for a year.
    The weetabix and rhubarb is a great idea.

    1. I froze it raw last year, and it freezes really well doesn't it. The only downside is that it takes up so much more space when it's chunky and raw. When Alan's Smeg gave up the ghost a few months back, I took all the bags of rhubarb from his freezer, cooked it up and then re-froze it. It saved so much room.

  6. One year I really went over the top with freezing rhubarb (mighthave told that...), I had 10 kg on rhubarb in freezers... So now I'm really keeping it down, only 5kg this year 😆

  7. Once it gets a bit too warm here on the Canadian prairies the rhubarb goes to seed. I have lots in the freezer and even got some jam made.

    1. It can go to seed quite quickly can't it, I was extremely lucky to catch mine during that really hot spell and cut off all the flower stalks as they appeared.

  8. I love rhubarb. I have tried to grow it, here, but, the summer was too hot and the plants died. It is very expensive to buy and not all grocery stores carry it.

    1. It is surprisingly expensive to buy in this country too, considering we usually have the perfect climate for it. But I guess that's mostly due to transportation issues.

  9. You have had a massive amount off your plant this year. At the allotment, ours was very productive too and we gave a lot away to allotment neighbours, family and our lovely new neighbours across the road. I have a couple of bags of it chopped up in the freezer for crumbles but we've had so many apples this year that they have taken priority ! kg after kg of them have been prepped and frozen, given away whole to (it seems) the whole street as well as family! I wish we had a local foodbank who accept donations of fresh fruit and veg but couldn't find one. I might have to make more effort to do so next year if we have a glut of anything.

    1. I always think that it's such a shame that most foodbanks don't accept fresh homegrown foods at this time of year. Our plants have done amazingly well. I have just done the final harvest and will be stewing it this afternoon ready for freezing.
