Not the Christmas That We Expected ...

We've not had the Christmas we expected, but we had a Christmas and that's more than some have.

Santa left us a dose of flu each.  Alan started on Tuesday and me on Christmas Eve, we did manage to pick up the Christmas food order from Booths, but Alan wasn't thinking straight and accidentally brought the supermarket's shopping basket home with us still carrying the food in the boot of the car.

We will return it, sheepishly and apologetically when we are both thinking and walking straight.

We didn't forget the gravy ... we somehow cobbled the Christmas dinner together between us, and manfully and womanfully ploughed through as much of it as we could.  It was the one meal of the day we could manage, it's been leftovers ever since.  Thank goodness for fridges.

The best news of all, none of the Christmas chocolate or alcohol has been touched ... so it should be a good New Year.

I do hope your Christmases were good.  πŸŽ„

  1. So sorry to hear you were poorly-Norrie was poleaxed last Tuesday by a shocking cold and I have the milder version. We too are eating what we can from the load of food still remaining in the fridge. Glad to hear you are on the mend now but take care not to overdo things and let your body recover. Catriona

  2. Sorry to read you have both been axed by the dreaded flu germ which is doing the rounds. At least you managed to eat some Christmas dinner, but I think leftovers are the best part. At least you could sit and make plans for your new home. Hope you both feel better soon. Xx

    1. Oh we didn't dare make any plans, our brains were fuddled. πŸ˜„ We've made a few today though to make up for the delay.

  3. I am sure Booths will forgive you! They seem a lovely bunch (at least they did in the Knutsford store last Monday)

    1. The guy on the door was lovely, he always is. He said 'I didn't see a thing', as Alan added our returned basket to the stack in the doorway. πŸ˜€

  5. Tough luck. I remember the year our family all had the flu and we survived on egg nog for a few days, all we could manage, which was handy as no one well enough to be the nurse. Enjoy the chocolate when you get to it.

  6. So sorry to read this. I am still struggling to get back from the Laryngitis virus with add ons, 3 weeks on, so hope your bugs don't linger as long. You have my sympathies as being poorly at Christmas is no fun.

    1. I think we are getting over it. Hiding away from the world for a few days seems to have helped. It's good when you don't have to force yourself to do things and can concentrate on getting better. πŸ™‚

  7. Oh bother! That wasn't in the plan, but seems to be the way most people I know in the UK are right now. The hospitals must be inundated! I love those days after Christmas, living on leftovers - they're nearly as good as the original feast (and sometimes tastier, as the flavours have had time to develop.) and I haven't had to cook! Yay!

If your supermarket has any sense, they'll welcome your trolley return with wide smiles and gratitude.

Our family has gone away on holiday so we are very quiet, and able to do Whatever We Want, Whenever We Feel Like It ... which is bliss. Although we love them dearly, of course!

    1. Luckily it was only a shopping basket not a trolley, I might have noticed Alan attempting to get a trolley in his car boot. πŸ˜„

  8. Hope you are over the worst today and better for new year.
Touching wood - all the family seem to have got through without getting nasty things this Christmas.

    1. Definitely over the worst now, it's mostly a sore throat, snotty nose and aching ribs now. I hope you and your family manage to keep avoiding all the germs. πŸ™‚

  9. Sorry to hear you’ve had the flu.
Tech issues again, mean less comments from me, which is frustrating. But I’m still reading all your posts and enjoying them very much. Get well soon x

  11. Hopefully things are changing little by little and you’ll both be back to normal pretty soon. Honey & lemon in hot water can be soothing when you’re under the weather

  12. I've had a flu bug that has come and gone then resurfaced mightily. So I do feel for you. It's such a nuisance at this time of year. Thank goodness you have each other. I don't think I would have eaten a thing without the Mr looking after me.

    1. We mostly kept to our own homes and wallowed in solitude, we don't 'do' being ill together very well. I hate being fussed when I'm poorly and Alan just sleeps, which for some reason I find terribly annoying. Poor man!! :-)

  13. Hopefully you are both feeling a bit better now. Our son and family came to stay for a long weekend on the 19th and he kindly left me his germs! Went down with them yesterday, but the family know me so well, I have 6 new books to read so between lemsips and tissues, I think I can cope πŸ˜€

    1. Yep, that's all I need, only in my case this time it was Lemsips, tissues and television, I couldn't concentrate on books at all.

  14. I'm glad you're both on the mend. Bad timing and horrible, but at least with the consolation that you are now both retired and not under any pressure to get well for a return to work. I'm a bit like Alan when ill and sleep a lot. I know when I was really ill when day time tv becomes bearable. As soon as I feel better it's intolerable and I am back reading.
As you say thank goodness for fridges, particularly modern fridges that seem to keep food fresh for even longer.

    1. There's no pressure to return to work as such, but the first builders are in on the 5th of January so Alan was definitely glad to be feeling well enough to start the demolition of the garage today. 🫀
