The View from the Loo, The Naked Civil Servant and Freebies

The view from my loo, or toilet for those not from this part of the UK.

I know my Uncle from Chicago was horrified during his visit to England many years ago, when my Mum kept calling the toilet 'the loo' ... but then his name was Lou, so it took some getting used to!!

Anyway, this is my view.  When you live on your own the door doesn't always need to be shut, and especially when you are visiting first thing in the morning and are in almost 'zombie mode'.

Looking at my lovely books makes me happy.

Ignore the Easter egg, this photo was taken quite a few weeks ago, it's long gone now.  In fact it was looking at this photo after taking it that reminded me that I had an Easter egg ... it's destiny was then sealed.

Talking of books, I picked this up off the charity book table in Booths on Friday for the usual £1 donation.  I was meeting Alan for a coffee after having my haircut and took the opportunity to browse the book table before going upstairs, well I had to pass it so it would have been rude not to.  This book was immediately picked up, and in fact I started reading it while Alan was in the queue getting the coffees.  I had no idea that Quentin Crisp was born in 1908!!

Does anyone else remember the television film The Naked Civil Servant starring John Hurt?  Seemingly it was first shown in the UK in December 1975.

Wow ... that feels like a lifetime ago, I must have watched it a few years later as I don't remember watching it with my Mum and Dad. 😀

We ended up having a coffee and a sandwich, so as usual I brought home the extras.

Then yesterday on our way home from Manchester we were both desperate for a coffee after an afternoon visiting Mum for the VE Day celebrations in the Care Home gardens.

Unfortunately, Mum can no longer get out of bed so we didn't want her lying there on her own while the celebrations went on outside her windows.  Me, Alan and my brother stayed with her for a while, although my brother had to leave after an hour as there was a football match on ... priorities!!

Anyway on the way home we had to get a coffee, so we stopped at the services and I had a free Greggs coffee available on the App.

I really am enjoying collecting my freebies. In fact I have just had a major sort out of my not-so-little stash as a lot of them are being brought into use soon.

  1. I don't shut the loo door at home either, I'd rather look right through the house and see the beautiful trees opposite our house, than a plain white door! I've often wondered about getting one of those posters designed to cover a whole door...
I remember Quentin Crisp, he described himself as 'the last stately homo in Britain', and noted there was no point in dusting as it didn't get any worse after four years.

    1. Yes, that quote is in the little bio at the start of the book.

I remember in the film him saying about the dust ... I've never been tempted to try it though. 😄

  2. That's a coincidence! When we were away we heard the song Sting wrote in honour of Quentin Crisp, Englishman In New York, played almost daily and both said it was high time we reread/rewatched The Naked Civil Servant. I used to have his quote "Fashion is what you adopt when you don't know who you are" on my blog's side bar for many years! xxx

    1. I didn't realise that song was about Quentin Crisp, I'll have to listen to it with fresh ears. 🙂

    1. Lots of people are the same, when I'm with someone though time in the bathroom is just for me. It used to be the only time I got any peace as a Mum and I think that mindset has just stuck.

  5. I cannot shut the door as I have a furry friend that accompanies me and gets very annoyed at closed doors!

    1. Yes, there's that as well. If I tried to shut the door with Suky around she would spend the entire time that I was 'missing' scrabbling like mad at the bottom of the door to 'rescue' me. If I just left it pushed to, she would barge straight in and look at me as though I committed some dreadful crime by trying to bar her entry.

  6. Love the view of your books, Sue, but I do have to close the bathroom door here. I like perfect peace when I'm in there and my view would only be a bare wall anyway!

I do remember that film but can't for the life of me remember if I actually watched it all.....

So sorry to hear that your mum can no longer get out of bed. It was lovely that you all went to keep her company during the celebrations.

    1. I think I need to watch the film again, hopefully it's on Netflix or somewhere. We just HAD to go and spend the time with Mum, I could think of nothing worse than hearing all the celebrations going on outside and not being able to join in or even watch. Her windows are both too high for her to see out of.

    2. That is so sad that she can't see out of the windows in her room. I would hate not to be able to watch the world go by if I was stuck in bed. My brother-in-law has just come out of hospital and is back at his care home for end of life care. My sister has been told 6 - 8 weeks. Here again, I am too far away to do anything as she lives in Suffolk. 2025 is turning into another horrid year for us all. Very sad.

  7. I remember that series. What I remember most about it (apart from him being beaten up for being a "queer") was the fact he never dusted, and he said something like after the first year, the dust just got thicker so it looked the same.

I push the door at least half closed as at the other end of the hall is the double glazed "door to nowhere" (yes and it truly DOES open!), looking over the sloping bit of the garden and rhododendrons between my land and the driveway to the long-closed nursing home. Just in case someone's walking up the driveway :)

    1. I think we all remember the not dusting bit don't we ... I would be too tempted to write in the dust for that to work for me 😄

Happily my bathroom is that small
if anyone came in I can reach to close the door. 🙂
