Free Food from M&S, and the Non-Challenge Challenge

I didn't really need any shopping after our little break away, and I actually said no when Alan asked me if I wanted to join him on a trip to Aldi on Saturday ... as he didn't mention going for a coffee, that made it much easier to say no.  😄

But on our way back from visiting Mum yesterday I decided to ask Alan to do a slight detour on our way back to the motorway, so that I could use the £5 M&S voucher that was burning a whole in my pocket.

As you can see I didn't buy much, in fact I was determined to stay around the value of the voucher.  I did well as my shopping came to £4.88.  Luckily Alan had picked up a pack of yellow-stickered cream scones, that he just couldn't say no to, two M&S cream scones for £2, it simply had to be done.  So that meant that I got the full value of the coupon and all my food was free.

I don't usually buy white buns or bread of any description, but rather weirdly they had absolutely NO brown bread or rolls in the store!!

I made myself a cheese burger for lunch when we got home, and although the bread was beautifully fresh, it just had no substance or flavour.

It's back to brown for me as soon as I can.

I wasn't hungry at all by teatime so I ended up having a very late supper of a bowl of pesto pasta.  It was tasty and very satisfying, but doesn't green fusilli look a bit weird in photographs ... maybe that's one instance where white would have been better.  😄

I would usually have added some halved cherry tomatoes for a bit of an additional colour pop, but supplies in the fridge are very low now and I didn't have any.  I am determined to use up all the old fridge stock before I buy anything new, and it's going really well.  The only things that get added to the fridge are the opened jars from the cupboard, such as the pesto or things that I purposefully cook too much of.

Something that I had completely run out of before our little holiday jaunt was onions, but that nice man next door asked me if I would like one of his.  So when he asked "red or brown?"  I said "yes" ... and managed to snag one of each.  These should enable to me to make good use of everything that is left in the vegetable drawer and mean that I don't have to go out and buy anything and get tempted by a visit to the shops again.

The red onion was called in action straight away yesterday, it's leftovers are in the tub on the bottom shelf, and I am about to make good use of the brown onion.

This non-challenge challenge is going really well, better in fact than some of my actual challenges.  😄

Have you ever completely eaten through the contents of your fridge, freezer or cupboards before having a complete restock?  In all my years of blogging I don't think I have ever managed it completely.

  1. I wouldn't dare eat everything in the house - that would be tempting fate for the end of the world and empty shops!!

    1. It really would wouldn't it. I think I am only attempting to clear the fridge, the cupboard and the freezer will remain stocked with lots of my stored foods. Although saying that, supplies are at their lowest for a while ... which in my case is still a lot.

  2. No, never managed to clear stocks completely nor even come close 😉😄
Agree about white bread, the only time I enjoy it , is toasted .

    1. I flattened and toasted one of the buns this morning, and with butter on one half and jam on the other it was more palatable. I still prefer brown though.

  3. I don't really think that I have managed to get through a whole fridge of leftovers or things to use up. I almost managed the bits and bobs in the fridge freezer a few times though. Like you we much prefer brown bread to white.

    God bless.

    1. I am enjoying the challenge of finding ways to try and use everything up, todays plan was to use up the carrots, hence me being glad to have the brown onion. It's funny most of us grew up eating only white breads, well I certainly did, and now we eat mostly brown bread. :-)

  4. My refrigerator starts to look like yours more towards the end of the month when I start to run out of things. I do like it though as it is super easy to find items I need.

    1. Yes, you don't have to move anything out of the way to find what you need do you. 😄

  5. The family used to eat all the freezer contents before our holidays because we were so prone to power cuts in our Leicester village, and I didn't want to come home to defrosted food. Now I always have plenty in store in case of unexpected visitors

    1. I've never tasted potato bread, but I loved potato pastry when I made it. 😀

  7. We got fairly close to it in lockdown 2020 until I managed to source fresh fruit and veg deliveries from a local company that had been supplying restaurants. Much later we finally got a supermarket slot and ir was much easier.

    1. Yes, I think quite a lot of people struggled for a time during the first lockdown didn't they. It was a worrying time, especially for the elderly. ☹️

    2. Indeed, we were unable to get deliveries of any kind for months in 2020. Our Daughter used to drop bits and pieces off at the door and my Brother dropped rice, pasta and longlife milk off. We were so grateful as it was a right scrum at the supermarket and we were fearful, at that time, of catching the virus.

    3. It's hard to believe that was five years ago isn't it. Both Covid and lockdown affected so many people in so many ways.

  8. When the kids were little and money was tight our fridge (with a tiny freezer compartment) was often almost empty. The cupboard was always pretty empty too. It scares me now to think how close to the wind we sailed. Later on, when I was working part time and finances a little easier I could do a weekly shop and restock a bit. Our Son was once heard exclaiming "is this a fridge? Or am I in Heaven?" !!😂
Nowadays I don't like to run everything right down as its tempting fate, apart from the fridge which is then easier to clean 😀

    1. Yes, I remember some really tough times when my boys were little. Everything counted, down to the last biscuit to last the week. But we got through it and learnt some valuable lessons on the way.

  10. The only way I can tolerate white bread is when its toasted, it really is the food of the devil!
Yes, we frequently have almost nothing left in the fridge or on the veg rack/fruit bowl between shops! We've always lived within walking distance of shops and, even during Covid, food was only a short walk away if we needed it. xxx

    1. It's not good is it, I mean white bread rarely even looks good. I want to start buying smaller quantities of fresh stuff, although my fridge is great at keeping things for a long time I would rather buy what I want for the week and use it all up. There will always be back ups of vegetables in the freezer for emergencies.
