Those of you that now follow me on Instagram will quite easily guessed that for the past few days we have been away on holiday, as I was busy sharing clips from days out and boat rides etc, those of you that don't will find the title of todays post unusual to say the least. 😄
A while ago we booked a mid-week break to this lovely little cottage in the Lake District, around four miles from Keswick. My son lives in Cumbria so we were going to combine it with a visit to him, and we did.
Our first morning out was to Keswick, for a little mooch around the shops, a couple of coffees and lots of people watching. After getting some shopping from what is seemingly the largest Booths in the chain of stores, we headed back to the cottage for an early tea and then set off for Simon's.
It's a picturesque journey to Frizington along the A66 passing by lakes and glorious views, and one that we hadn't done for quite a while. Happily two of my grandsons visited the same evening so that we could all spend some time together.
Wednesday morning saw us heading to Wordsworth's house in Cockermouth.
What seems like a plain house on the outside was in fact a lovely homely house on the inside.
The 'best office'.
A well-stocked larder.
The walled garden was absolutely glorious and buzzing with bees.
As requested I helped myself to a teaspoonful of wild flower seeds. ⚘⚘⚘
The River Derwent over the garden wall.
We decided we needed some fresh sea air after the heat of the morning, so we drove to Whitehaven Harbour and sat on the front enjoying sandwiches and coffee ... not a bad way to spend a lovely afternoon.
We got home had a bit of tea and television watching, and then Simon and Emma returned our visit and came to see us at the cottage. No doubt stealing a few ideas from this beautiful decorated and equipped cottage for their own home, which they are currently taking back to original stone inside on some of the walls.
For our final day we headed to Ambleside, stopping at Hayes Garden World which sadly has now been taken over by a much bigger company. We had a nice lunch there and then continued through the Lake District heading for Bowness on Windermere, where I worked at a couple of jobs many years ago.
We had a little stroll around and then decided to have a sail on Windermere on one of the large boats ... neither of us was in the mood for a rowing session. 😉
It was lovely to be on the water for ninety minutes of calm, breezy peace and quiet.
We ended a lovely day with tea, coffee and cakes in Lakeland's café, before making a few purchases and heading back to our cottage home.
After a lovely evening drinking wine, eating up the last of the food that we had brought from home and watching television, we turned in for the last time, drinking in the wonderful views from the upstairs windows.
I don't know if officially it was allowed, but as we had sadly lost Mavis after we had made this booking we decided to take Ginger with us. All the booking forms and the blurb for the cottage talked about 'pets' being welcome, not specifically dogs, so he came too. While he was a little angel at the cottage itself he really did not like the journey there or back, yowling all the way.
He will not be joining us again!!
It was a good little break from home and one that was really needed after all the stresses of the past year and the first few months of this one. Now we just have to wait until August when we have another mid-week break booked, just us two ... no cat!!
Here is a link to Squirrel Cottage if you would like to have a little look around it.

Sounds like a wonderful break and the photos are lovely. Ginger does look rather grumpy!
ReplyDeleteYes, that's his current 'resting annoyed cat' face. He's starting to look puzzled most of the time. 😄
DeleteWhat a lovely break. I'd love to go to Wordsworth's house (love that larder). I would love a few days to explore the Lake District as we only ever stopped there overnight when we were heading up to Scotland. What a shame Ginger wasn't happy with the journey. Great to catch up with your family though.
ReplyDeleteHe actually travels well when he's loose in the car, but I am loathe to risk it in case we have to stop for any reason. There's such a lot to see and do in the Lake District, it would be worth you travelling up for a full week. 😀
DeleteLovely. I enjoyed the photos. Poor Ginger
ReplyDeleteHe slept off the stressful journey when we got home ... but our ears were still ringing with the yowling for hours. 😄
DeleteSounds like a lovely vacation. Poor Ginger - my Dancer doesn't like being in his carrier or car rides and cries and works himself up even on the 20 minutes ride to the vet's. I have to sedate him, every time.
ReplyDeleteGinger has only been in a cat carrier a couple of times, so it's still scary for him. When we moved from Wales to England he escaped within minutes and then spent the entire two hour journey sat on top of a pile of belongings in the back seat of our truck. So he can travel well, just not in a carrier. 😄
DeleteSounds like a lovely few days away, love the idea of a tsp of seeds.
ReplyDeleteIt is a really lovely idea isn't it. I just have to think of where to sow them now. 🙂
DeleteI love the Lake District especially Ambleside where I've spent many happy holidays! Squirrel Cottage looks lovely. Ginger looks most at home but having a chronically car sick cat I can sympathise with the trauma of the journey! xxx
ReplyDeleteAmbleside is beautiful, but nearly always full of visitors. I used to struggle to park unless I got to the shop I managed very early. Happily , none of our animals has ever been car sick.
DeleteSounds and looks like a lovely time away
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
It was a nice break, but I'm happy to be home. ❤️
DeleteThe path in the garden fills my heart.
ReplyDeleteIt was beautiful. I've told Alan that I will only move house again if I can have a walled garden. ❤️
DeleteHope you have come back feeling rested, despite Ginger’s objections to the travelling. You certainly had great weather for your visit.
ReplyDeleteWe were so lucky with the weather, wall to wall sunshine every single day. 🌞
DeleteI really enjoyed reading about your great holiday. The pics are all lovely and I had hedge envy at the next to last one - wish mine looked so tidy! Such a pity Ginger was a poor traveller.
ReplyDeleteWendy (Wales)
Everywhere around the cottages was so neat and tidy. The ring of different coloured hedges on the lower left of that photo is actually where all the wheelie bins were hidden. It took us a while to find them. 😄
DeleteHow wonderful Squirrel Cottage looks 😍 I also loved seeing your clips on Instagram and although it's been years since I went to the Lake District we have had some great visits there ❤️ I thought it was so special to take Ginger with you, shame he complained in the car 🙀
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely. Slightly smaller in real life than it appears on the photos, but you know that that suits me just fine. 😄
DeleteBit late to the party here but the Lake District is my favourite place in England. We 've been to Wordsworth's house in Cockermouth - my children loved it as they were able to dress up! You may remember that I've mentioned Booths is my favourite supermarket and the one in Keswick is head and shoulders above the others except perhaps Windermere - I recognised Keswick Booths straight away from the photo. we once took our cats on holiday from Devon to Surrey - never ever again!! Fiona x
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful isn't it, I think Alan is half tempted to want to move back there.
DeleteWhile the Booths had a lot more of a selection than our slightly smaller one, I think that I prefer ours and especially our café. Ginger is NEVER coming on holiday with us again. 😄
