A Virtually Free Meal

 


This recipe popped up on a Facebook Group that I am a member of a few weeks ago, and I photographed my screen so I would remember to have a go at making them.

I haven't as yet, but I am going to for sure.

It would be virtually a free meal wouldn't it as the ingredients are so minimal and cheap.  Schnitzels made from just oats and flavourings.  I hope they stay together well, I'll let you know once I make them.

I thought of them the other day as I was dividing a tin of beans into my usual three portions.  I usually have one of the portions on a baked potato, one on a slice of toast and then a spare, which I now think would go perfectly with my virtually free schnitzel. 😊

  1. Sounds good and it reinforces what I’ve always thought - why don’t we make savoury porridge, and yoghurts too? Why do they always have to be sweet? This could open up a whole new category of eating for me. Thank you. I will try this later today. Val

    1. I use yoghurt as a savoury ingredient quite a lot, in coleslaw and added to curry etc

    2. Yes, Sue I do too, but I was thinking more of being able to buy savoury flavours in the supermarket - I’m thinking crisp flavours would be good to start with, before going on to blends of herbs and vegetables. I must put more thought into this. Val

    3. Well, I tried the recipe and it was very tasty. I baked them in my halogen oven with a spray of oil. They were nice and spicy and crisp. I enjoyed them as a snack throughout the day. More will be made and I shall try different spices too.Thank you again. Val

  2. Well, I never knew Schnitzels were fried porridge! Is that what the song in the Sound of Music mentions?

    I'll leave that recipe/taste test to you!

    1. A schnitzel is usually a very thin, breadcrumbed piece of meat, or as a vegetarian option it could be a seasoned slice of breadcrumbed aubergine. This is the first time I've heard of one being made from porridge. 😀

  4. We have porridge or basic muesli with fresh fruit every day for breakfast. I blitz porridge oats to make oatmeal.
    Staffordshire oatcakes were a popular frugal meal here, a yeasted oatmeal batter fried like pancakes, filled with grated cheese or bacon, or whatever was available.
    Oily fish like herrings and mackerel are tasty fried in oatmeal.

I make a fried oatmeal patty adapted from The Prudent Homemaker's blog .I mix about 1 cup of leftover cooked oatmeal with 1 egg,finely chopped onion and celery with salt,pepper, poultry seasoning and about 3/4 cup of dry breadcrumbs(enough to hold it together).Form into patties and fry in margarine or oil.You can eat them in a sandwich with burger fixings or with chicken gravy or thinned cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup with mashed potato and veggies.

Her name is Brandi Simper and she is also on Instagram and face book but not on you tube as far as I know.She is also a wonderful photographer and has a fantastic garden that she grows in the desert atmosphere of Las Vegas.She tells her story of how her family survived for a whole year on her garden and food storage with very little income when her husband wasn't working.

  8. Fried oatmeal! Now that sounds interesting. I don't like oatmeal (what you'd call porridge) in general, but, spiced up, breaded, and fried might be something to try. :)

    1. To me oatmeal isn't porridge, it's the coarser grain that I use to make oatcakes out of. But I think all the terms for oats are pretty interchangeable aren't they. I've cooked leftover already cooked porridge into a pancake style patty before, and that was nice. 😀

  9. Hmm, now that sounds very interesting. I have had oatmeal made into muffins, pancakes, cereal, and granola, but never a schnitzel. You must tell us how it works out.
