It's been a funny old week and weekend, both weatherwise and family wise.
The weather can't quite make it's mind up, one day we have glorious sunshine taking the edge of the cool breeze and I can get washing dry on the line, the next the skies are grey the wind is howling and then it's starts to sleet ... and once again I put off actually digging out my Summer t-shirts and tops from under the bed.
In the first of the family news, my brother visited Mum on Saturday, she got very angry with him and then fell asleep and didn't wake up again. We went yesterday and she slept through the whole visit, even with us both being very noisy in a bid to wake her up sensibly. Graham went back again this morning for another visit ... he only lives ten minutes away from Mum's care home ... she said hello and then fell into a deep sleep. A lot of this is obviously expected at this stage of events but it's still a bit discombobulating. Luckily our three hours on the motorways was much quieter than usual and our pit stop at Greggs on the services was very tasty on the return journey.
The other family news, in the much wider family was a very sudden and shocking death, publicised in the local news in Manchester and all over social media. As a Mum it's really shaken me and made me really sit and think about how easily things can change for us all. Just when we think life is ticking along relatively nicely, life stops us in our tracks and shows us that it's best not to assume anything.
To round the weekend off nicely, two of the guys were in the bungalow building the bedroom wall this morning ... and it collapsed. Luckily neither of them was injured, but one guys toolbox suffered complete destruction.

Yes, you are so right, life can and often does, change dramatically in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you as you travel to and fro the nursing home to see your Mum. Lots of us know how hard it can be.
Alison in Devon x
Thank you Alison. I think the two and a half years of doing the same journey two or three times a week is starting to make me a little crazy ... Alan would say VERY crazy. It's a good job we moved from Wales, that would have added another 30 minutes to the journey. :-/
DeleteKeep safe as you travel. Hoping that Mum is awake enough to talk with you on your next visit. Hoping the building work proceeds swiftly and safely! And you are right about the fragility of life. A cousin called me this week, she has had three bereavements in just a few weeks. One had been expected, the other two were not. Sad for all concerned 💔🙏
ReplyDeleteThey managed to rebuild half of the wall before clocking off for the day. Three bereavements in just a few weeks is so unbelievably sad isn't it. I know how hard it was losing Alan's Mum and then my Dad in the space of five months. I hope she has a lot of support around her.
DeleteLife can trip us up - it teaches us not to take things for granted.
ReplyDeleteIt really can. Life is such a gift, it's hard when it is literally snatched away for no reason.
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your Mum, and about the death in Manchester.
ReplyDeleteIt really takes only a minute for things to change - which is a frightening thought.
Hope your builders can rebuild and don't have any more problems
Mum's decline has been hard on everyone involved, and is the exact opposite of the other family death. They managed to rebuild half of the wall before clocking off for the day.
DeleteYeah, we've had the same wonky weather. At least you visited your mom, and even if she wasn't aware of it, YOU know you went. Glad no one was hurt by the wall!
ReplyDeleteThat is what we have been consoling ourselves with for the last few months. Even when she is awake and knows we are there, so has forgotten the visit before we have left the home and tells others that she has had no visitors. Only a toolbox and a few tools were the casualties of the collapse thank goodness.
DeleteI am sorry about your Mom, and about the death in the wider family. You are right it just takes a minute to change how life is moving along.
ReplyDeleteWe are getting the same type of weather here on the prairies of Canada. Today the sun is shining, and the wind howling. Tomorrow rain is forecast and then the next day is snow.
I am glad that no one was hurt in the collapse.
God bless.
The weather has just been unbelievable hasn't it. Today we have a cool breeze, but glorious sunshine. I'm making the most of it with a washing line full of clothes drying in the lovely fresh air.
DeleteSo sorry to read what you are going through at the moment, xx
ReplyDeleteIt's been a bit of a time for sure, it's grinding us all down.
DeleteSounds like it was quite a week. I'm sorry your Mum slept through your visit and to hear that something happened to a member of the extended family (although I don't know what it was). The wall collapsing must have been scary, but, thank goodness no one got hurt!
ReplyDeleteI hope that this week will be better.
I'm sorry I can't say more about the death in the family but there is a full on Police investigation under way. Luckily we arrived just after the wall collapsed, so although the builders were embarrassed they didn't have to worry about the people paying their wages witnessing it happen. :-)
DeleteThat really was quite a week you had. Hoping things improve. XXXXX
ReplyDeleteQuite the week, but it's behind us now thank goodness.
DeleteThat anonymous above comment was me, I didn't notice I was posting anonymously.
ReplyDeleteThanks for adding your name Maureen. xx
DeleteOh dear, that sounded like quite a week. I'm very sorry about the sudden death and the wall falling down and hearing about your mum falling asleep during your visits brought back some sad memories.
ReplyDeleteI've loved the warmth and sunshine of the last three days, its been lovely to peg things on the line reassured that I'll not have to dash down and retrive them 10 minutes later. xxx
It's sad but she's just reached that stage now. On today's visit she was all enthusiastic to see us and then fell asleep immediately, then she woke up as we were talking about going (and being noisy on purpose) said goodbye and fell asleep straight away. At least she 'saw' us this time. :-)
