My Easter Shopping ... and Temptation

While Alan was doing a final pre-Easter days work with the builders at the bungalow yesterday, I took myself off to the shops for the things that I wanted this week.  First I called to Aldi, gosh it was really busy considering it was only 9.30 am.  People with full trolleys and the Easter egg aisle was virtually impassable.

I'm pretty stocked up with most things at the moment, so these were just extras that I fancied and replacements for things I have used.  Of course I had to include Ginger's Tasty Licks, a very necessary thing at the moment as he is on two lots of medication from the vets, one for his arthritis and one for his over-active thyroid.  They must taste nice as we have no trouble getting any of his medicines down him. most unusual for a cat!  🐱

The receipt for posterity ... and price comparison in a years time.

Gosh doesn't fish and wine bump up the cost of the shopping, I may have to have another try at frozen salmon fillets, the last lot that I got were not that nice though.

Then it was round to Sainsbury's as I had a £2 off coupon for the little Oggs cakes and they are currently on Nectar offer at £3, so I got them for just £1 which makes them a very nice Easter treat.

I picked up some of Alan's favourite cough sweets, he eats them in the car when he's travelling, I like the black traditional ones but not the honey or cherry flavours, so they are all his.

So pretty bog standard shopping for me really.

We don't do family meals or even visits at Easter any more, which is a shame.  So there's no need for us to stock up on the makings of a large lunch.  I think I am going to try and rectify this once we move and we have our lovely big open plan living area.  It would be nice to get everyone round once in a while.

As I paid for my Sainsbury's shopping the machine spat out a very tempting coupon.  It's £18 off a £60 online shop, I need to sit and have a think about this one as it is a really good offer.  Perhaps to good to miss ... I don't know.  🤔

  1. Sounds like you did well with your shopping. I had a grocery delivery today and spent just under $60.

    1. It was just bits really, it seems like I never do 'a full weeks shopping' these days, just top ups. 🤔

  2. £18 off a £60 shop is too good a deal to miss. You could buy a lot of things for your storecupboard with that. Do you never buy toiletries or washing powder or liquid soap or salt/pepper/sugar/loo rolls/toothpaste/shampoos etc? Those are the things which bump my shopping up.

    1. Happily I have a couple of weeks to think about what to get, if I use it. Yes, and when I do they all appear on here at some point. My washing pods come from 'smol', so they don't. I never buy liquid soap, I use bar soap. I ask for shower gels, shampoos, and body and hand creams for Christmas and birthdays off Alan, as he knows the few that I can safely use.

  3. Bovey Belle above has said exactly what I would say and many of those items will have nectar price reductions, if you choose carefully.

    1. I think toilet rolls would be good to stock up on as the ones that I buy haven't been on their usual offer for a while, so I've been hanging on waiting.

  4. I got a side of salmon on Nectar prices this week which made it cheaper per kilo even than frozen. I'm not keen on frozen salmon either, except when I freeze it myself.

    1. I find too much water comes out of frozen salmon when you cook it, so they obviously pump it full of water before freezing it to add to it's weight. Freezing it ourselves is a much better option.

  5. I know what you mean about the frozen salmon at Aldi, I think they only do pink salmon and it’s not nice at all. Happy Easter 🐣

    1. Yes, and it's in very small pieces too. Salmon is going to have to be a very occasional treat. 🫤

  6. We’re having a lunch for six on Sunday so I was off to M and S this morning first thing. The retail Park was heaving and as we followed the M and S lorry in to car park, there wasn’t much with a good date on it. I usually do an afternoon tea when these visitors come but decided to do a buffet with some hot food and salad. I also bought an Easter chocolate log as the other 4 all like sweet things. They can take any leftovers home for tea as I don’t want the sweet things left in the fridge as a temptation to the diabetic one in this house. Catriona

  7. I will try the cat treats for my beloved Milo - he has daily meds for arthritis, and is not great at taking it . Thanks for the tip

    1. It's really working with Ginger, I do think they must have improved the flavours of cat medicine though, he is even licking it neat off the edge of the bowl.

  8. That Sainsbury’s voucher is too good to miss isn’t it.
We’ve gone off salmon at the moment, I’m quite glad as it’s so expensive!

    1. It's definitely a treat food now, for good reason I guess. I'll most likely be back to tinned fish after this week. 😄

  11. I'm impressed that you were able to buy a bottle of wine for less than £4! Even our cheapest wine here is more than that.

  12. Well, in Canada, we never get offers like that!

I still do a Sunday Dinner for my family. They all know they are welcome. Our sons friends know that there will be a meal if they drop by. I enjoy it. We catch up and the dishwasher does the dishes.

The only person who ever said anything snarky was my Mother. "Just like an episode of Blue Bloods" with a sniff. I just passed the lamb and asked if she wanted fizzy water.

  13. I went to Sainsbury’s for the May issue of Gardeners World (£9.99) with the 2 for 1 Gardens to Visit booklet and voucher for the next 12 months.
We got 2kg of potatoes and Savoy cabbage at 15p there, and 1kg of onions for 8p, carrots and parsnips 4p, from Aldi, from their Easter offers.

    1. I usually buy that edition of Gardeners World, it's worth it even if you just use the ticket once isn't it.

I got potatoes, carrots and onions from Aldi on Saturday, it just had to be done. 😁

  14. The voucher offers a good saving. Perhaps it IS too good to miss, Sue. Sainsburys have just emailed me a £6 off £60 delivery which I will use week after next. I've already booked the slot and can adjust the order later on.

Happy Easter to you and Alan xx
