I seem to have a plethora of little cut in half tubes of various things around the place at the moment. But as you can see from this photo of the mini travel sized hand cream, originally picked up from a hotel stay, there is always a lot more in tubes than you can possibly squeeze out in the proper way.
I wonder how many years of throwing away nearly a quarter of my products I had!!
I know so many of my readers already do this, so I really am pointing out the obvious, but if it helps one person to see the light and save some money in these price rising times then it worth a bit of repetition.
This particular one looks so cute now that I have popped it's 'top' on. 😄
There's an even tinier one in the bathroom.
My lips really suffer in the Winter months, and even more so when I am constantly blowing my nose when I'm not well. So having a few tubes of this in the bathroom cabinet has been a godsend. But I'm not wasting even a drop of it.
There was a tube of toothpaste also chopped near the bottom, after I had scrapped all the contents down, but that is now all used up and it was the dropping of it into the bin that inspired this blog post.
Yep, I get my ideas from everywhere. 😁
Alan asked me the other day if I had bought any kitchen paper yet.
As you can see here from the kitchen roll holder under my wall cupboard the answer is still no. I think the last time I purchased a new roll was probably in either November or December of 2024, so I am doing well with my paper napkin saving from cafés etc.
I do have to admit to carefully retrieving Alan's thrown away cardboard roll from the paper recycling bin yesterday ... he had thrown away the cardboard roll off his kitchen paper with two pieces of paper still attached. 😧
I will make sure to use them for peelings or wiping up and not for anything to do with fresh food making, although they were sat quite neatly on top of an empty box of assorted chocolate biscuits that Alan had for Christmas.
Sue xx

I, too, cut down my tubes of creams and turn bottles up side down to get the last bit out. :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I have regular upside down bottles around the place, it's amazing how much drains downwards after 24 hours of upside living isn't it. :-)
DeleteWhen my daughter lived at home she was always throwing toiletries etc in her bedroom bin, some hardly used. It was a treasure trove for me especially as it was all Clarins 🙂 June
ReplyDeleteThat was bad for her, but very, very good for you. :-)
DeleteDo this with tubes of things too and it’s amazing how much cream etc is still inside. I can also brush my teeth for a least four days after Norrie starts a new tube-I have him trained after 54 years not to throw the existing tube out! Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much toothpaste gets trapped along the inside of the tube isn't it, even after the flattening and scraping along with a knife. It's the same with tubes of tomato puree.
DeleteDoesn’t everybody do that 😊
ReplyDeletePeople with our years of experience and even a basic level of frugality yes, but I have a lot of new, younger readers and it's nice to share tips that we may have picked up years before. As I say in the post if it helps just one person to achieve some savings on their products then it it always worth repeating.
DeleteSue, there are cute little spatulas on Amazon made just for scraping out the product from tubes (of cream, toothpaste, etc.). They aren't very expensive and they come in packs of 3 and different sizes.
ReplyDeleteYes, I've seen them recently. But then I thought why buy something to do what I am already able to do very easily with my finger or with things that I have been using for years. But I guess they would have other uses too.
DeletePackaging is often not consumer-friendly. That's an understatement!
ReplyDeleteYes, they really do want us to waste the products don't they, just so we will keep buying more and more. It is not good for the consumer or the planet is it. It infuriates me. :-(
DeleteI have to laugh as I have been doing this since I was 21 when my brother mocked me for cutting the tube to get the last out. Still do it today 45 years later!!!! Small savings add up
ReplyDeleteI always forget to leave the paper napkins out to use. Good ideas here. Jean
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm in your club! There's often an array of bottles standing upside down, trying to capture the dregs. I stuff toilet roll inners with the lint from the tumble drier (when we use it) it makes a great firestarter! xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm with you all the way, Sue, and I'd have rescued the kitchen roll too!
ReplyDeleteYou've saved me from my maniacal squeezing of tubes, putting them on hard surfaces and crushing them for the last drop. How much easier my life is going to be!
ReplyDeleteLots of cut open tubes here as well. I am going to get every drop that I can.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
