Latest Bungalow Update - Devastation and Demolition

Where once there was a garage and a garden there is now a hole and two mountains, one of soil and one of blocks.

Things have to get worse before they have a chance of getting better, and now perhaps we can all see why this is going to take us at least a year of taking down and rebuilding.

The bathroom is now mostly out, just the toilet waiting to be removed.

And to keep everything nicely up to date here is a quick walk through that I did yesterday, while we were waiting for the builder to come and have a look at the hole that will be the new garage foundations.

Alan planned to have the garage rebuilt first so that we will have secure storage for any of the building materials and tools needed on site.  The old garage was unsalvageable as it's concrete pad had cracked and the walls were in a terrible state, in fact Alan said that once the roof was taken off the lefthand wall came down all by itself.  While we don't actually need a garage to put a car in, as we will have off road parking for at least three vehicles, we do need it for the storage it will offer us as there will not be much in the bungalow.

    1. His accent is very mild at the moment, he keeps coming out with very Lancs phrases, a sure sign he needs to visit Scotland for a while. πŸ˜„

    2. Usually I come back from a visit "home" with my Suffolk accent tuned up but oddly not so much this time.

  3. “You can’t make an omelette without breaking an egg”. As my son kept telling me when we updated the whole house while living in it. My mantra over the time it took was, “ this too shall pass”.πŸ™‚ It’s going to be a delightful home Sue, thanks for sharing the videos I shall enjoy seeing the progress. Well done Alan “a man who can” is always a hero to me as my husband can’t, hence my son’s involvement in our update. June

    1. Exactly, your son is right. πŸ™‚ It's really handy being married to an engineer who used to own a building company with me. πŸ˜€

  5. Well done! It will be brilliant once finished. Are you having a brick built garage or wooden one? If the latter, email me and I'll give you details of the brilliant company who fitted ours

    1. It will be block built. The house must have had a wooden one originally as the foundations were virtually non-existent, hence the slab cracking under the weight of the old block built one. The build of the new one starts next week. πŸ˜€

    1. It is almost a complete rebuild, only the roof, exterior walls and one interior wall are remaining. The floor is coming up next. 😬

  7. You two don't mess about do you! You have achieved a lot in a very short time. I think getting the garage built first is a brilliant idea πŸ’‘

  8. Guess your summer holidays will be spent on the building site😊.
You might have mentioned it previously but could you remind us how large your bungalow is please. Bet it’s going to go from the worst house in the street to being the best looking one

    1. Haha yes, hopefully the worst of the work will be over by then and we'll be onto some of the 'nicer' jobs. πŸ˜€

We've just been working the square footage out, we reckon around 800 sq ft mark. So more than twice what I am used to and less than Alan currently has. Happily the other houses on the street are very well looked after, ours was really letting the side down. 🫀

    1. Yes, Alan has asked me to take the films as a record of what we will have achieved, he has a terrible memory. :-)

Looks like a lot of work was done in a short amount of time.

    1. We had all the electrics disconnected so that Alan could safely remove all the sockets and light fittings, those sockets were installed and isolated by the electrician so that any workmen will have access to electricity for their tools ... and for the very necessary electric kettle for cups of tea etc. πŸ˜„

  12. What a sensible decision about the garage and safer storage. Really good video to whet our appetites (you've got such a steady hand !)

  13. That's a very neat building site. What an organised and tidy worker you have in Alan. It's brilliant how much has been done so far. It's a good idea to keep videos and photos. Some of us pop up on 'on this day' from time to time; interesting shots of where the pipes are under the floor etc🀣😁
It will be great to be able to look back over them when it's all done. Our bungalow is around 1000sqft and that's been good because it give us enough shared and separate space.

    1. It should be even neater ... briefly ... after tomorrow. I've just sold all the kitchen units and they are being picked up, and a skip is being delivered for all the debris. πŸ˜€

It sounds as though you have similar space to us.

  15. We have about that same space and that was exactly what our place looked like during renovations. Alan is much neater than Harvey though.

    God bless.
