We called to Booths for a coffee on Saturday morning. Unusually Alan didn't have a bacon bun for his breakfast, he had a cream scone ... now that surprised me. 😄
I needed some eggs and some white pepper, but walking down the fridge aisle I spotted these chips on a '3 for 2' offer again, so I picked up three packs. Each pack will be split into three and will be frozen for adding to future meals. A third of a pack along with something else is just perfect for me.
At the tills I was looking at the Christmas Country Living multi-pack offer and Alan talked me into getting it. He then proceeded to pay for all the shopping, including a Christmas gift for my brother ... and there was me only the other day saying that I was doing nothing for Christmas yet. The magazines won't be read until 1st December, it would just be wrong!!
Then we went around the corner and into Aldi.
Now I didn't really need anything except bananas, something green and some cat treats, but I think all the talk about the budget and prices going up must have been on my mind because I bought a few tins and packets to stock up next years cupboard. Alongside something else for Christmas, a couple of little Christmas puddings.
Of course not everything will last, and one of the tubes of 'Stackz' has already gone. There were very quickly munched through while we had a glass of wine last night whilst watching The 1% Club on tv.
I should hide the chocolate from myself, which is quite an easy job to do these days as I seem to be in the habit of losing all sorts of stuff at the moment.
I'm going to try and get into the habit of keeping all food receipts for future pondering over. With the speed at which prices are going up they should make for interesting reading in a few months. I'll stick them into a notebook so I don't lose them!
I thought that I actually got quite a lot for my £20.65 in Aldi, indeed even the guy on the check out mentioned that,. But thinking about it, it's mostly because there's no animal products or wine in amongst the shopping, doing without those is always a good way to save money.

I really like the Mash Direct products and I bought some of the chips after your recommendation. We have Readly, so I confess to already reading many of the Christmas magazines. Catriona
ReplyDeleteThe chips are really tasty aren't they. If I didn't portion them up into sensible sized portions I would be so tempted to have a big dish of just chips and mayo.
DeleteSeeing all those beans reminded me that when going to shop at Lidl today I better put some cans on my list. I was thinking about stocking up anyway, so why not start today? I also decided to do what you do with the receipts and keep them for a comparison next year. SBL
ReplyDeleteNext time I'm at the shops I will be picking up some chickpeas and some baked beans to add to my stash. Yes, keeping the receipts should make for interesting reading shouldn't it.
DeleteI'm adding lentils to my plain mince beef batch cooking these days, better for me, for the planet and my purse.
ReplyDeleteYes, on every count. It's such a sensible idea isn't it and stretches meat out really well, and the best thing is you don't really notice the smaller amount of meat if you make it super flavourful. Of course I don't use any meat but I do still add all the flavours. :-)
DeleteI add 1 tbsp oats too , a fibre-rich purse friendly filler...
DeleteI do that too Angela, they also help to thicken up the sauce slightly for things like cottage pie don't they. :-)
DeleteIt looks like a good amount of groceries for the price! and I love the idea of saving my grocery receipts for the next year. It will be eye opening to see just how much we spend, plus how the prices fluctuate.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of getting a cheap 2026 diary, but then I realised how many blank notebooks I already have, so I am just going to write the date on each page as I stick them in.
DeleteI have noticed that when out of stock items come back into stock, the price has usually gone up. I shop online, so receipts are not hard copies.
ReplyDeleteIt is a crafty way of doing it isn't it. They must think that if we don't see something for a week or two we will have forgotten the price or the pack size. Could you screenshot the list of goods you buy, or print it out and keep a copy?
DeleteYour pickles are definitely cheaper than pickles here in Tennessee in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI spotted these highlighted on someone's Instagram post the other day. They have been massively reduced to clear. At that price they are a real bargain and the date on them is actually 2027, so I might pick up some more next time I'm in Aldi.
DeleteI'm going to be doing a Lidl run for the same reason this week. Good idea to keep receipts for a while, it will be interesting to see what items get hiked up . Also a great to tip to add a few oats to meat dishes....... I'll be doing that.
ReplyDeleteThose stacking crisps are soooo tasty, I'll add them to my list 😉😆
Alison in Devon x
They are far too tasty, we meant to only eat half ... and then they were gone!!
DeleteYou did get quite a lot of groceries for the amount you spent. Our grocery prices are out of control, over here in the US, contrary to campaign promises that grocery prices would come down on Day 1! Ha! I don't save the actual receipts, but, I do list my grocery prices in my blog posts and keep a record of what I paid, that way.
ReplyDeleteI did well this time. 😀
DeleteI can go back over this years, and previous years shopping posts to check prices, but I think having the actual receipts will be more tangible for me.
I did my shopping today and I was a bad girl and let things get really low in my pantry. I have started to build that back up and I know prices just keep on going up here in Canada. You managed to get a good haul on the groceries.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
The prices just be getting ridiculous in Canada. They were high enough before, so I dread to think what they're like now!!
