Instagram verses Facebook verses YouTube verses blogging.
I guess it's all a sign of the times.
I know my youngest grandson wouldn't touch Facebook with a bargepole and to my knowledge he doesn't have an Instagram account. He is a gamer and used to be on YouTube, but I don't know if he still is or whether he is now on some other platform. My older grandson shares the occasional thing on Facebook and chats with me via Messenger, and my eldest grandson advertises his removals business with a Facebook business account, free advertising is never to be sniffed at when you are running what started off as a small company.
Quite a few bloggers have made the leap to YouTube and are being pretty successful in their new 'careers'. I only ever used YouTube as a vehicle to be able to download little films off my phone or camera onto blog posts. I have never felt the urge to be a YouTuber and can't see myself ever doing it.
I have quite enjoyed my dalliance with Instagram, and have been astounded at the viewing figures on my little reels, posts and stories ... I still get confused about which is which. 😕
But looking at my professional Instagram dashboard, I have had over 13,000 views in a little over a month ... that is crazy!! It is also a little bit alarming to think that all those people have been looking at my posts, and the question is of course do I even want so many strangers looking at my films, pictures and ideas?
As you can imagine I am having a really big think about this one.
I think my forte and my heart will always be in blogging.
I love the written word, it's tangible, it stays where you put it, and bar a little mis-translation occasionally is exactly what it says it is. Us Bloggers were also at the forefront of the whole 'Influencer' and online advertising thing. I remember myself and a few blogging buddies being asked to choose three tea towels each from a lovely small company and do a review of them. These were actually brilliant by the way and lasted me for years. Most of what I agreed to review turned out to be really good. I was very picky and choosy and rarely said yes to an out of the blue offer ... although we did once jump at the chance to get an anniversary meal completely free of charge by agreeing to review a pub chains new menu.
Very true Sue! I've recently made my Instagram a private account. I don't have a blog so I don't know if it would feel different when it comes to a blog? I think maybe it would...It is an interesting debate.
ReplyDeleteI've always been very relaxed about blogging, maybe slightly careful with my addresses and financials, but always happy to chat and meet with fellow bloggers and readers when we lived in Wales. It was a beautiful place, it would have been mean not to share it. 😀.
DeletePerhaps we should all get into tik tokking - whatever that is!?
ReplyDeleteOh gosh no, even my eldest son has decided no more TikTokking. 😄
DeleteBAD blogging experience: I was asked to review a book by an American pastor's wife. As a courtesy, I sent her a copy the day before I posted it. She sent a very grumpy email saying it wasn't nice to put negative things In a review, and could I take them out! My "negative" comments were that I was unsure how well it would go down with British readers, because of the many transatlantic terms [eg faucet, fannypack] and having a weekly manicure appointment wasn't something that the women in my church did [this was a major feature of the book] GOOD a company sent me money to hold a party for somebody, so we held a BBQ for our church worship group. BEST the many true friends I have made over the past 17 years. I can't be bothered with insta or tiktok. I watch YouTube but don't make videos. Facebook is useful occasionally
ReplyDeleteI was always going to giving honest reviews, and I made sure the few companies that I dealt with were okay with that. The only one that wasn't happy with my review was Aveeno, I criticised the planned excessive packaging of a new range it was launching. Happily it's all in the shops now ... minus the extra packaging. 😃
DeleteIt's a shame that she didn't take your review in the right way. I think we've all made some good blogging buddies over the years.
I enjoy blogging and reading other blogs, including yours. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's something that you have to enjoy to be able to keep it up isn't it. ❤️
DeleteWell! Being asked by a company to review things! I am impressed! Knowing you through your blog I'm sure you gave them a fair and balanced review.
ReplyDeleteI've stopped looking at Facebook (too much ads and junk) but I am thinking of getting back onto instagram as a way of keeping in touch with family and friends who use it.
My old blog had a lot more Followers, which was a necessary requirement to be asked to review things, it's just the same for Influencers these days.
DeleteYes, Facebook is mostly adverts and AI these days, it's a shame because it started out well. 🫤
I have been a blogger since 2009 and have used it as a diary of what I was doing when. I watch Youtube videos but don't make any videos myself. I tried Facebook briefly once and hated it, so came straight off again. I don't use any other social network platforms. I enjoy blogging and following other blogs and hope to continue for a long while yet.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's how I started with my shop diary blog in 2008, then we moved to the country and it evolved. I think blogging can be addictive, I've completely stopped a couple of times but always come back. 😀
DeleteHi Sue. I have read your blog since the beginning. I have always enjoyed it and I always will! Have a good weekend. Bun
ReplyDeleteAww, you're a real old timer then, 17 years of my weird and wacky ramblings... you deserve a medal. 😄🏅
DeleteI have read your blogs since 09 as that is the start of my blog. Don't enjoy FB except for a private pet group and only use Youtube to see videos/listen to music. I enjoy your blog, your humor and the animals so hope you keep it up, Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWow, thank you that's a lot of reading. I'll be keeping it up for sure but sadly we're down to just one lonely pussy cat these days, so there's not a lot of animal content. 🐱❤️
DeleteI dislike the term 'influencer', I wouldn't want to influence anyone! I use FB for keeping up with family news, but frankly it's a pain in the bum nowadays with all the advertising and shoving 'suggestions' down our throats, and now AI stuff.
ReplyDeleteI've never had a problem eith the term, it describes their function very well. These days everyone seems to be influenced by what others have. We used to call it 'keeping up with the Jones's' ... if we had the money to do it.
DeleteThe AI stuff on Facebook is scary isn't it, and even more scary are the people in the comments sections that think it's all real. 🫤
Although I've been blogging for a total of almost 11 years I've never been asked to review anything. I must not be interesting enough! ;0) lol...
ReplyDeleteI can't stand facebook or Insta and Tiktok is too weird. Utube is ok in places but I don't believe half of what I see on there with AI interference etc now. I do love some vloggers like Vivi, Shoestring Jane and Ali in Scotland but a lot of the rest leave me cold or in total disbelief. Life is too short to be glued to a screen :)
Angie
I don't think bloggers get asked much these days, maybe some with the more advert heavy blogs, but not us bloggers with less than 1000 followers for sure.
DeleteI'm not do keen on the bloggers that just sit and talk to camera, but I have been watching Alie in her build up to retirement, and of course she has a Pug which always grabs my attention. Another real favourite is Rewilding Jude, he's setting up his smallholding in Scotland, which brings back happy memories for me.
I used to like Facebook when it just showed me friends/family posts and the very occasional ad - but now it's wall to wall ads and reels, and yes, most of the younger generation won't go near it! I did instagram for a while but not anymore and I watch YouTube sometimes but have no ambitions to post anything on there either.
ReplyDeleteReading blogs that I enjoy still ' feels like home ' to me , long may it continue.
Alison in Wales x
My son told me recently that he sat and watched all of my YouTube videos on his huge television. I was a bit mortified at first, but then I just thought 'oh well'. Mine are snippets filmed just to added to blog posts, definitely not big screen entertainment. 😄
DeleteI've been blogging since 2007. I just can't seem to kick it. Tik Tok and You Tube just don't cut it for me the same as writing does. Love your blog. I love the format and your design. Hope to be a long time reader!
ReplyDeleteBlogging is addictive isn't it, I've tried to break the habit a couple of times. 😄
DeleteWelcome to the gang. ❤️xx
I only read blogs. I don't have a facebook or instagram account, so what I can see on those is very limited before it nags me to get an account. We do use YouTube a lot. There's loads of things about places we know or want to go to and the ability to say 'don't recommend' a particular channel or topic means that it's fairly easy to start limiting what you see to stuff you are actually interested in. We also use it instead of going to exercise classes and figure the premium subscription is worth it. Perhaps that's the difference? I don't/won't use things that want to inflict intrusive adverts on me.
ReplyDeleteTwice I've paid for premium on YouTube, it makes it much more enjoyable doesn't it. I hate adverts with a vengeance and when vloggers start raving about some product that we can have 10% off with their code, I just fast forward these days.
DeleteI'm not dedicated enough to blog on a regular bas. Years of nightshift put paid to that.
ReplyDeleteI did get a gift to review from a company on my IG page. It was a bundle of dog supplies. I gues my pack looked like potential social media stars.
I am a mazed at how certainn loggers who swore they would never take freebies if they didn't use the product change their attitude over the years. An E Bike comes to mind. It appeared out of the blue on a random post and has never been seen or mentioned again.
I guess it is very tempting for them when the offers get bigger and bigger. I kept everything small and only accepted things that were genuinely useful to me long term. I also turned down all offers of tv and radio after our brief appearance on a television programme. 📟 📺
DeleteI love to read the blogs I follow and admire your dedication in keeping going. Catriona
ReplyDeleteHaha ... you make me sound like a real old timer, okay I admit it, I am. 😄
DeleteI much prefer blogging. It's like popping round to a friend's house for a chat. I flirted with IG and amassed a few thousand followers very quickly but found it a drain on my time and all rather vacuous and empty.
ReplyDeleteLike you I download videos from my phone to YouTube but can't be doing with watching amateurs blathering on about nothing. I've never looked at Tik Tok - I imagine I'm about 50 years too old for it!
I used to be inundated with offers including as a vintage expert on a TV show - no way, Jose! I've accepted wallpaper, prescription glasses and a book in the past! xxx
I briefly watched TikTok, but there was no way I would have uploaded anything to it, and it was a huge time eater, so I quickly uninstalled that one. I love that the things we were offered back in the day, were so totally different.
DeleteBlogging will always have my heart, I just don't have as much time as I'd like to keep up with posts at the moment. I use Instagram occasionally, and I signed up to facebook (I don't really use it, but I do like to read useful advice for when I go walking). I rarely go on Youtube, as I find that I'm more likely to read posts than watch and listen to vlogs.
ReplyDeleteI always love to read your posts, Sue, even if I don't always comment. Xx
I think we are all similarly loving blogging and reading blogs more than any of the other platforms. ❤️
DeleteI concur Sue. Blogging still feels authentic to me. Sharing tips and news with any folk who are popping by my blog, and of course visiting other like minded bloggers too, a proper community. I do follow some vloggers on You Tube but once they start ranking up the paid promotions I lose interest.
ReplyDeleteYou've hit the nail on the head there ... blogging is authentic. 😃 I think a lot of us put more faith in the written word don't we. Seeing things in black and white helps us to understand and take it in so much better. And of course it's there to go back to, or even print off, if we feel the need to.
DeleteYes, we did it first! I started blogging in 2007 and I’ve read your blog for quite some time. I’ve met some lovely people via blogging and I even got involved with the vintage fairs due to blogging. I’ve kept the blog going as my diary and it’s lovely to go back and reminisce, now and again.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the weekend! 😁
There are quite a few of us that started at a similar time and continued right through to today aren't there. I think it proves that blogging is addictive. 😀
DeleteDid you know Elaine Kirsch from the vintage fairs?
Well said, like you I started blogging before 'influencers' were even invented - March 2008 when my first post went live.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about wondering who are the people racking up so many views on your posts (particularly the Instagram ones).
I am so glad you have continued/are continuing, thank you - it really is like a quick coffee and a catch up, with none of the nonsense which I/gram or other channels try to push onto us. xx
Gosh, we entered blogland at the same time. 😃
DeleteIt is slightly worrying that so many of my views on Instagram are from non-followers, and they rarely leave any comments. Possibly it's time to step away again.
But, have no fear I will continue to blog, so grab your coffee every time I pop up. ☕️
