Set the Table Nicely

I've got so many random bits and bobs in the fridge at the moment that I have decided to use everything up before I buy anything else to go in there.  It will also help me with the fact that I have very little money left after paying off my credit card this month.

There's even less in the fridge door!  😕

Don't panic I won't starve, there's stuff in the cupboard too and I do have my savings if push comes to shove.

Oh well, if I set the table nicely no one will notice that there's not that much food on it.  😄

You may notice the Instagram logo has appeared on my sidebar again.  I decided to re-join as I was missing following some of my favourite Instagrammers.  I do have a page of my own once again, but this time it's mostly about small home and small budget type things rather than photos of my family.  So if you would like to follow along just click on the button on the sidebar and then Follow.

I am just going to be sharing some images from in and around the lodge, foodie things and moneysaving things and my current reading material.

  1. You have more willpower than me - hate having an empty fridge, and my girls are always telling me off for it!

I love that room setting. Old chopping boards are now on trend (sold two big ones at the weekend) so need to get more stock. They decorate a kitchen beautifully.

    1. I do like the challenge of finding a meal from what appears to be an empty fridge, and the determination it gives me to make good use of everything. I sometimes miss having all my old chopping boards, but I can only use one or two at a time so they had to go.

Alan has more than me, in fact we went to see The Accountant 2 last night, and when he opened his cutlery drawer and there was one knife, one fork and one spoon, Alan said 'Ooh look he's just like you!!' ... I'm not really THAT bad, but it's tempting. :-)

  2. Shirley Conran wrote in her book Superwoman about budget foods, and making an effort with appearance is important . She said «a candle always improves the appearance of a meal table - but even candlelight cannot disguise spaghetti ad nauseum«. This phrase has always stuck with me, especially when our very tight budget means we have eaten a lot of pasta!

    1. I read her book a couple of times, borrowed from the library when the boys were small. It did inspire me to set a table even better than usual when there was less food. The boys liked helping themselves from central dishes, so I would add all sorts of things, extra bread and butter, a big bowl of shredded lettuce or cabbage or sometimes just a jug with more of the soup that we were eating.

  3. Your fridge looks so clean and organised and shiny! Mine's an untidy clutter of packets and bits and bobs... now I feel I must Do Something about it!

    1. It's funny a lot of people comment on how clean and tidy my fridge is. It helps that it's really well lit, and that I am a wiper!! If a shelf is not holding a lot I can't help myself but move everything and wipe it down, then I carry on as I move it's bits back and usually end up doing the whole fridge. :-)

  4. Aw... such a cosy photo. You know you can't resist a challenge, even in a year of no challenges! I just know you will eat well from the bits you have left.

I don't 'do' Instagram so I'm missing out on your posts there, but would find it all a bit daunting I think.

    1. There are just going to be more photos of food and the garden, along with a few reels. 😀

  5. Because of your mention and clicking the button I discovered I have an instagram account , there's nothing on it but I must have started it for some reason. I updated my profile but there's still nothing on it - probably won't be - can't cope with two things!

    1. Yes, I was surprised to see you were already on there. Oh well, it's there if you need it in the future isn't it. 😀

    1. When I'm not in the mood I do one shelf at a time. That way I can do it before the 'door open alarm' goes off as well. Well that's my excuse.

    1. Gosh I seem to have inadvertently guilt-tripped so many people. Oops, sorry, now go and wipe out your fridge ... but only if you want to and the sun isn't shining. 😄

  9. It's funny how you can make food stretch a little bit longer even when you think the fridge is almost empty. I enjoy having a week when we eat from the fridge and pantry. Sometimes I have plans on my weekly menu to make something and then I run out of time as we end up having to have a quick meal. At the moment I have been making nutloaf for the last few days but spent time in the garden instead. At least the nuts have a long date on them!
I liked Instagram the way it was before all the changes - can't get used to all the reels and no comments.

    1. It does make you think more about what to make when there's less to choose from doesn't it. The comments are still there in Instagram, but I agree about the reels, mind you they are much better than TikTok ... that's staying deleted for me. 🙂

  10. What a clean and organized fridge. A lovely table setting is always something that seems to make things so much better.

    God bless.

    1. I think it's because it's so well lit that it looks neat and tidy. I also decant things into glass storage containers and jars, so lack of garish packaging helps it look fresher. 😀

  11. Lovely table and room. I eat from the corner of a small counter in the micro kitchen. I should use the table more but moving a plate on my lap in a manual chair is tricky.
