14th Aldi - £34.83
This is the post I was going to do on Monday, but I simply did not have the energy and needed to decompress after Sunday ... and then I needed to get it all out of my system yesterday.
We called to Aldi on the way home from visiting Mum, and I think you can tell that I needed some treats as well as a few necessary bits. Two bottles of wine, chocolate, two packs of cheese and pasta, two of so many of the items in my trolley. I think I just get in the habit of picking up twos when I am running out of something, which is no bad thing really.
I did limit myself to one block of chocolate ... but only because I already had some at home. 😁
The wine and fish definitely bumped the cost of this shopping up, but I was still happily surprised that this was all I spent, I was expecting it to be more.
When I got home I realised that I had taken the photo of the shopping in the trolley before I had added the eggs to it. So I laid it all out again for your perusal.
I really could have gotten way with not shopping this week, but sometimes your sanity tells you that it needs some wine and chocolate.
I did sort of need more pasta though, as I had tipped the last of my smaller sized bags of penne into my large pasta jar on Friday. It used to come in 500g bags, now it seems to be only available in 1kg size. I seem to have lots of spaghetti in my store cupboard but I was down to no replacements of penne, which is obviously my favourite.
So, that's the rice jar and the pasta jar freshly filled, and the shelf is looking very healthy at the moment.

I wonder why they've changed pasta to 1kg after all the years of 500g - cynically I wonder if it's so they can sneakily reduce the packs to 750g and charge the same. Enjoy your chocolate and wine after the weekend stresses.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering that too. All the years of me doing challenges and buying a 500g bag for 42p, and then suddenly it's in 1kg bags. Sainsbury's were the first to do that last year, and now it seems that Aldi have followed suit. Oh yes, some of the wine went down very well. 😀
DeleteI should think the chocolate was welcome after such a day. I hope your Mum can leave hospital and get back to her own bed soon.
ReplyDeleteShe is back at her care home now, she will be seeing the doctor today to organise oxygen being given to her in situ next time it's needed. That was literally all they did for her at the hospital.
DeleteIt's interesting to see how Aldi (a German firm) markets its products in other countries. As a German, some stuff looks just the same to me apart from the language printed on the packages, some is way different. I guess they source partly from the country they are located in, mixing it with products they offer and buy/produce on a global scale.
ReplyDeleteI hope your Mum's health has improved and she can go back to the space she is used too soon.
Yes, I watched a really interesting programme about this a while ago. Seemingly it took them about a year or so to adapt to the British tastes and ways of celebrating events throughout the year, and then their sales really took off. 😀
DeleteFood with a colour theme? Our Aldi has been rearranged again, the staff said they didn’t know where anything was now. Their budget fusilli has gone and the budget fruit and nut mix has been missing for weeks.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of orange, both on the packaging and on the foods isn't there, I hadn't noticed. :-)
DeleteOurs has stayed with the same layout since they had the big refurb a couple of years ago, it makes for a nice speedy food shop, and yes, I bet the staff are pleased with that too.
You most definitely deserve wine and chocolate after the weekend you've had. Yes, you did get a lot for your money too. I wish we had an Aldi a bit closer to us, then I could give it a try. I'm not getting much for my money at the moment :0(

It was very necessary and really enjoyed. It is really having an Aldi and a Booths so close to us, with a small Sainsbury's to occasionally plug any gaps.
DeleteSo many beautiful and delicious ingredients! Which recipe is your favorite to make with them?
ReplyDeleteThere is going to be a lot of pasta this week, so with just cheese (my new obsession), or with the simplest of tomato sauces ... half the cherry tomatoes roasted with half an onion and a garlic clove and whizzed up. The Kyivs with rice and peas, both of which I already have and most important of all, the wine with the chocolate. 😄
DeleteThat's my favourite Aldi chocolate, hope it did the trick…
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely little bars of chocolate, aren't they. Five in a pack, so I can choose have just one ... or go mad and have two over the course of a film. 😁
DeleteI am a rice person, and don't often eat pasta, but had some spinach and ricotta tortellini last night, with a mince/bean sauce and veg. Made a change. A good shopping trolley there. Your basa is a damn sight cheaper than the smoked haddock I bought last week (£7.50!) for making kedgeree with. In my defence, there wasn't a price on the front of the freezer and only two packets left . . .
ReplyDeleteI think I veer between rice and pasta for my obsession. It was rice until about a week ago, now it's really simple pasta sauces, or even just cheese on pasta, which is unbelievably good. 🍝
DeleteI don't know how you feel about visiting the supermarket, but in Greece products are getting more and more expensive. Of course you can't compare since the quality changes!!
ReplyDeleteEverything is getting more expensive isn't it, there has to be a time when prices stop rising and pack sizes stop shrinking ... surely!!
DeleteYou've earnt every mouthful of the wine and chocolate!
ReplyDeleteWe usually eat pea or lentil pasta as the normal stuff is too stodgy for our taste but after our trip to Rome when we discovered that not all pasta is equal Jon's bought Barilla, it's delicious! x
That really is a good pasta brand isn't it. I am getting on well with this Aldi one at the moment. I've recently realised that it's brown pasta that disagrees with my stomach. 🤔
