Aldi - 20p
At the start of the week I picked up some of the Easter 'bargain vegetables' from Aldi. This year once again they were promising that they were absorbing the loss and not the farmers ... I hope that this was true.
The potatoes were 8p for 2 kilos, the onions were 8p for 1 kilo and the carrots just 4p for a kilo. Lots of food but not much money.
They might have been cheap but I was still going to look after them and make them last as long as possible. So they were all unpacked, left to breathe for a while and then repacked into my Lakeland Stayfresh bags.
Booths £9.60
We went for a coffee at Booth on Easter Monday so we got a bit of shopping while we were there, I spent £9.60 on a dozen eggs and two organic long-life soya milks.
Booths £7.25 + £1 for the book.
I called back to Booths on Wednesday to pick up a ready made pastry case, after being at the Doctors. My back has been really bad and I just couldn't face making my own pastry, I cheat when I have to and I am more than happy to admit it.
The soya milks had been reduced since our last visit so I snapped up two more at the new lower price, along with four lovely looking Gala apples that were four for the price of three and a loaf of bread. I kicked myself on the way home as I remembered that I have one of these loaves in Alan's freezer. Oh well, it will all be used.
I was waylaid by the charity book table on the way out and this book forced me to buy it. I am already halfway through, it is brilliant.
Have I anything to declare ... ?
Only my complete inability to stop shopping for food when I am supposed to be on a shopping ban while I work on making space in my freezer and random food storage areas.
Oh well, it was only me that knew about the ban, I didn't tell Alan and I didn't tell you ... so no one knows. 😁
Sue xx

You can always donate it back (after you finished it!) and then there wouldn't be any evidence...
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes I do this virtually every time. 😄
DeleteI cheated this week and bought a pack of shortcrust pastry. I cannot remember the last time I did that!
ReplyDeleteSometimes it just has to be done. 😀
DeleteYour secret is safe here! I know how debilitating a bad back can be, after my ruptured disc a few years ago now, so no-one would blame you for making shortcuts. I always buy the organic versions of milk and eggs too. I like to think of happy chickens and cows ( with cows milk) and happy fields with crops.
ReplyDeleteI do miss going to Booths when we went up to Scotland, we would stop off at the Penrith or Kendal branch. Our nearest was Ripon when we visited my daughter but they closed it down. Hope your back gets easier. Take care.
We're switching to mostly organic things these days, whenever we can after buying from Riverford this past few months.
DeleteMy back is a lifelong condition, but flare ups make it so much worse. Getting back to 'my normal' would be good and would also bring my blood pressure down. 🙂
I'm so sorry to hear that your back pain has been bad once again, Sue. I must have come out in sympathy because mine has been bad too. That's why there have been no blog posts over the last week as I couldn't concentrate on anything. I had to take Ibuprofen to make the pain bearable and it upset my stomach making my IBS worse. I try not to take it but sometimes I just have to. Getting older is no joke is it :0/
ReplyDeleteYou have some bargain veg there! Soups maybe?
I hope you feel better soon,
Angie xx
Mine isn't a 'come and go' back pain, it's a permanent day in and day out condition. I take the edge off it with paracetamol, and have taken 8 a day since 2021, but since the flare up in February it's gotten a stage worse and I am having to adjust and occasionally add other tablets into the mix. I can't take Ibuprofen as that can't be used as a long term medication, and it does upset my stomach. .
DeleteGetting older is no joke, but it's better than the alternative ... I think!! 😄
PS your secret is safe with me too!! lol...
ReplyDeleteHaha 😄
DeleteYou have my sympathy reference bad back, hope it’s easing up a bit now.
ReplyDeleteA bit of cheating in the kitchen is sometimes a good thing, and I must admit I loathe making pastry cases.
Alison in Devon x
I just need to adapt to the new level of pain and take control again. 🙂
DeletePastry cases are just fiddly aren't they. The cheat was very tasty 😀
When I look at those veggies, I see soups and scalloped potatoes, and other good things. Nice bargains!
ReplyDeleteSo much potential, and they should last me a while. 😀
DeleteWell, you can't really turn down three bags of veg for 20p, can you?! You are a skillful shopper!
ReplyDeleteI think virtually everyone in England would have been tempted to get at least a couple of the Easter vegetables. 😄 Most supermarkets sell them this cheap at Christmas and Easter. Some people go a little bit mad, which is not a problem if the vegetables aren't wasted. 🙂
DeleteI have been a dreadful shopper . The o ly thing I consistently make sure I have is cat food ! I have just been told that I need both knees replaced - with the Consultant talking to me about horrendous wait times or “ availability in the next three weeks “ if I opt to pay - for a horrendous price . In between trying to empty my house , buy another and help my daughter move , it’s all a bit much
ReplyDeleteS
Gosh yes, one thing we always have a lot of is Ginger's favourite cat food and treats.
DeleteWe seem to be 'over a barrel' if we want quick operations etc these days don't we. Pay or join long waiting lists, I hope you can get things sorted.
I hope you get some relief from your back pain soon, Sue, it's so draining, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteJon snaffled some of that veg, too - he's using some of the parsnips and carrots to make a veggie tagine tomorrow, I can't wait! x
Once I get it on an even keel I'm much better at ignoring it and pushing through. The tagine sounds nice, as long as it's spicy but not too sweet. 😀
DeleteSo sorry to read that your back pain has become worse. I'm trying to come to terms with more or less constant sciatica pains, myself.
ReplyDeleteYou found some good bargains! And, your secret is safe with me, too! :D
I'm hoping to get back to my old level of normal with careful levels of activity.
DeleteYou're all good at keeping secrets. 😄
What great prices on the veggies. I though my back was doing well today, until I went to Mass. I might have to take a pillow with me as the pews are just so hard.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Gosh, that is the worst thing ever isn't it. A pillow sounds like a good idea for next time.
