Here it is at last, the kitchen that I sat and designed with our brilliant kitchen guy. He did his magic and got it all pictured on his computer programme, and now at last Alan can see what has been inside my head since we first looked round the bungalow.
While Alan is the technical guy, I am the one with the vision for what could be in a place, so we work well together ... once we both get the other's vision.
The kitchen is the same colour scheme as the one I currently have in the annexe, as we both thought that it would suit being in a kitchen/dining/living room space. But it has a lot more units and a built-in washing machine to the left of the sink.
The table and chairs are just an 'artists impression to show how the space will be used. We will probably have to make do with our old dining table at first, but may change it when funds allow.
Of course, I will still have some open shelving for my cookbooks, is a kitchen even a kitchen without cookbooks on display!! 😄
We are going back to our old 'American style' fridge freezer but without the water/ice dispenser shown in this picture. We loved this free-standing design when we had it in our Welsh kitchen.
The French doors on the left of the picture lead to the garden, and will eventually open onto decking with steps down to the garden, and the glazed door on the right leads to the small hallway, the front door and both bedroom doors.
I have to say, I am really pleased with how it all looks and the sheer amount of storage space we are going to have behind all those cupboard doors and large drawers.
Finally here is an 'artists impression' of the dining and living room end.
The main differences are, that we will have our main television on my sideboard as we are not 'television on the wall' type of people, and my bookcase and Alan's tall lamp will be in the large alcove.
The multifuel stove we are getting is a more traditional design, and Alan is treating himself to a smaller leather reclining sofa, as his current one is too big for this space.
But the main thing is that Alan can now see my vision ... now if I could just learn to understand the finer points of underfloor heating, solar panels and their batteries, and having three water heaters it would be perfect. 😉

That looks splendid! Good to see you have plenty of electric sockets. How do your corner cabinets work? We love our carousels. One year on, we are so grateful for the careful planning which happened before the work began. I hope your new kitchen brings just as much joy.
ReplyDeleteThe corner cabinet to the left will have one of the water heaters in it and the one on the right will most likely just be a shelf. Rather than a carousel that space will have plastic baskets that will simply be slid along and lifted out. After designing four kitchens in the last five years, I think I'm putting everything that I've learnt to good use. 😄
DeleteYour kitchen units are the same as mine, only I have round pewter handles. I even have those slim pull out units either side of the cooker! Gosh, you will struggle to fill all those cupboards now you have pared everything down to the minimum, but more room for food :) Is your current kitchen table a circular one? It will be a nice light room with the French doors out to the garden.
ReplyDeleteI love the timeless simplicity of this design and the subtle green colour. The only thing I'm changing to this time is having a stainless steel sink, having a cream one as I have now is not good when we eat so many turmeric containing curries and red pasta sauces. 😄
DeleteDon't forget we will be combining both our kitchens into one ... I just have to persuade Alan to simplify his a bit!! Alan has our rectangular table from the Welsh house, I don't have a table here. If it doesn't look right we will probably look out for a round or oval one instead ... when funds allow.
Your new kitchen looks lovely and quite spacious, too. I like the open plan. :)

DeleteThat's exactly what I'm aiming for in our extension, but our space is only about 10' by 20'. It looks wonderful, I do love an all-in-one living cooking dining room. A modern version of the old fashioned farmhouse kitchen.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting for me to be able to measure it properly once the walls are down. Our kitchen guy got the measurements from the architect for the plans, but I need to know the feet and inches for myself and actually see the space.
DeleteYour new plans look so light and airy and I have always like the colour of your units. We have shaker style units too and the pull out cupboards and corner cupboards and almost 20 years on I still appreciate the careful planning we put into it. The flooring is being replaced next month-for the first time by a professional fitter as Norrie’s almost 77 year old knees are not up to laying click flooring. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of my units so I was really happy when Alan said he would be happy to have them in our final home. We had to add the pull-out cupboards to even out the space at the side of the oven, not my first choice but I will make them work for me.
DeleteAlan's knees have been playing up with taking all the floors up , now he has a bit of a break before he has to get down on them again to lay the underfloor heating. ;-)
It all looks beautiful. It gives us all a good idea of how it is going to look, as well as Alan of course.

ReplyDeleteSkye - I am a 'wiper' by nature, so every time I am waiting for the kettle to boil I am wiping worktops and door trims. I also put pages of magazines on the top of the units so that any dust settle on them rather than the top of the cupboards, it's very easy to change them every few months and not have to clean up greasy dust ... yes, I learnt the hard way. ;-)

DeleteThat's a really nice kitchen, and spacious enough for fairly ambitious cooking! (Anything beyond a sandwich is ambitious in my book.) I didn't even know "American style" fridges were available in this country. When Dave and I go back to the states for a visit, we're always surprised by how HUGE the fridges are!

DeleteThat looks like a lovely spacious kitchen. There's only one thing I would prefer, that is not to have the washing machine in the kitchen. Our current and last home we've had a utility room and I wouldn't want to be without it. I'd happily sacrifice a bathroom to keep a utility room.
ReplyDeleteSadly that's something we just do not have the space for, the two ensuites are essential in such a small bungalow. We have gone for a quieter built-in model to try and minimise noise.
DeleteYou will love the drawers. from my experience--- Ask how much weight they will hold. Hope you get some slide out drawers for lower cabinets like I have.
ReplyDeleteMy current ones, that are the exact same size, hold lots of weight and I have always loved them, there's no scrabbling around on hands and knees to get things out of the back of cupboards. They hold all my pots, pans and baking equipment easily. There is only one of the lower cabinets that could have slide out drawers, but with all the other drawers in place that won't be necessary.
