Food, Treats and a Thank You

This was my shopping yesterday, a grand total of £18.59.

Most of the things that I bought were on offers, either Nectar offers or my personal choice Nectar offers, so it meant that they were all worth having.  The little dessert pots are delicious and they, along with quite a few other vegan things, have only just begun to be sold at our small branch of Sainsbury's since it's refit, I turn them into a mini crumble type affair by crumbling a shortbread biscuit on the top.  At a reduced price of just 95p each instead of the usual £2,and with a July date, they were well worth getting and we both really enjoy them.

The bottle of Fanta and the bag of Revels sweets are not something that I usually buy, but we are going to the cinema today to see The Salt Path and I know ... as he always does ... that Alan will make a last minute decision to buy both of these at the sweet counter on our way in.  Last time he did that the same two items cost him almost £8 and having saved money on our tickets by going to the Silver Screening I was not about to let him blow money on sweet treats.

I don't usually have any sweets while I'm at the cinema and if I do take a drink it's a bottle of water from home, but as the Silver Screening tickets come with an offer to be able to have a coffee and a cake for just £5 I might be tempted for once. 😀

As I'm not doing any sort of official challenge I don't show all my food purchases these days, but sometimes it's nice to have a reference to look back on here on the blog.  Although it isn't a challenge I am quite enjoying keeping my spending low, while being able to have a little splurge every now and then on things like the in-season strawberries without having to confess.  😄

A card arrived the other day and we were both a bit confused as there are no events in our lives this week, it was a really lovely surprise when I opened it and it was a thank you card from my youngest grandson for his birthday money at the end of last month.  Somehow you don't expect thank you cards these days do you especially from a 16 year old, yet thinking back he did the same last year.

 It made our day.

  1. Cinema sweets are a real swizz, far better to remember to bring your own!
Your grandson is very thoughtful, well done him.

    1. Cinema sweets are an absolute rip-off, they are getting huge profit margins, but I guess that's how they supplement the massive hire costs of streaming the films. I much prefer to take something of my own, and I can make sure it's in a quiet wrapper if it's something I'm eating during the film and not before the film starts.

  2. Well done that boy! Remembering to say please and thank you is an important habit, and means a lot to the recipient

  3. What a lovely lad! Such a thoughtful gesture and he's got great taste in cards, too!
We're off to the cinema later (The Phoenician Scheme, we're huge Wes Anderson fans). I never eat or drink in the auditorium although we're not adverse to treating ourselves to beer and artisan pizza in the bar area post film! xxx

    1. I can tell he chose the card as he's a gamer through and through and has posters just like this, this makes it more special and something to slip into my 'Keeping Memories' box.

  4. That boy is a credit to his parents! I once had a teen tell me that people don't send thank you notes anymore. They do and it is not a generational thing, it is something learned at home. Enjoy the film.

    1. He really is a credit to my son for sure. :-) Simon, his Dad, is really into cards for anything and everything, so I guess it's rubbed off on Oscar. I'm really looking forward to it.

    1. The book is brilliant isn't it, it's on my 'to be read this month' pile ... which will make it the third reading since I got it when it first came out seven years ago.

  6. What a fab Grandson. He's a credit to his parents.
I really enjoyed The Salt Path book and would love to see the film. We haven't been to the cinema since before the pandemic so that might need to become our treat for July :)

    1. We both really enjoyed the film, I was quite surprised that Alan enjoyed it as much as he did. He obviously hadn't read the book and it's not usually his sort of film, but he loved it.

  7. Lovely to get a thank you card, it is a relief to know that a gift has arrived.

The Salt Path looks like a good film.
We get an intermission with tea and biscuits included with the entry for the monthly afternoon film at the Memorial Hall. There are no adverts, the volume and lighting are just right, no chatter or mobile phone, no stale smell of popcorn, and no one slurping or munching through the film. There was absolute silence for Conclave, and applause at the end.
The films are well chosen to suit our age group, and £5 seems reasonable. I will remember to take a cushion.

    1. That is a really good deal isn't it. Ours was a real 'grown-ups' film showing, lots of people coming in with cups of coffee, and a few had glasses of wine. :-)

  8. I always like bringing my own treats to the movies too! Looks like you got a good grocery haul. I am jealous of the fresh berries & tomatoes. We have been painting our kitchen cabinets this week so all we have been eating has been frozen foods haha. Thanks for sharing!!!

  9. We are not allowed to bring anything from home to the movies. Lovely card from the grandson. How very sweet of him to remember to send you a thank you.

    God bless.

    1. It used to be that way here too, but these days I think they turn a blind eye if you are discreet. They are just desperate to get bums on seats to make the film showings worthwhile.

  13. I enjoyed seeing what you bought at the grocery store. :)
Glad you enjoyed the movie and was able to take your own treats.
How wonderful that you received a thank you card from your grandson! So many people forget or don't bother to send thank you cards.

  14. Leaving Twitter once it became Musk's property was not a difficult decision.
Leaving Instagram was - most of my nieces and nephews post their news on it.
But I did leave it and actually I still hear enough family news through my sister-in-laws WhatsApp group.

    1. I left Twitter years ago, it got very toxic. I did leave Instagram earlier this year, but I've been dallying with it for a while again recently. I'm not sure at the moment whether to carry on or not. It eats into my reading time. 😄
