A Case for Slow Living

I never thought I would say this but already I am missing the warmer weather.

I usually find sunny days far too hot, I like being cool. But here in the north of England the last couple of weeks have been cold ...and I mean cold. The central heating has clicked on a few times and it is set to only do that when temperature falls below 15 degrees.   I even added another thin quilt onto my bed last night to keep me a bit cosier.

I love this meme, but in my head I sort of adapted it as I read it to suit our current weather conditions.  Today for instance is the first day for two weeks that I have been able to get the washing out of the line to dry.  I haven't been able to do much in the garden other than remove the decimated lupins from their pots.  I fear there was no way to rescue them, the greenfly have won for the second year running.

The poem that Joy mentions in the comment section.  I Googled it.

But I am revelling in slowness, and the light lingers longer and longer as we head towards the 21st and the longest day of the year.  I lay in bed last night watching the light slowly fade from below and above the curtains, remembering that as a child I hated being sent to bed when it was still 'daytime'.

I rescued the crusts from my toast, along with half a slice of toast that Alan couldn't finish when we went out for breakfast last weekend and I am currently turning them into some oniony, garlicky croutons to have with my homemade soup for tea.

It will be a nice simple, frugal and tasty evening meal on a day that is already turning just a little bit chiller.

Time to go and get the now dry washing in now I think.

    1. Oh they were delicious, I could taste them all evening. They complimented the lentil and veg soup perfectly. 😀

  2. It has been cold and wet in Staffordshire after the hot spell in May. Porridge for breakfast, and soup with salads. I baked a large rice pudding with cream and sultanas with the Sunday pot roast. I got my very old uniform cardigan out again, to wear over summer pyjamas, for reading in bed. The forecast is looking a bit better for next week.

    1. Yes, it's been the same here, I have a cardigan on the back of my chair that gets put on to keep me warm as soon as I sit down for any reason. 🥶

  3. "...remembering that as a child I hated being sent to bed when it was still 'daytime'."

Someone said this better than me, but the punishments of childhood become our goals as adults. Take a nap! Stay home! Ah, sounds like bliss. 😀

  4. I'm with you. Dave and I were just commenting on how chilly it's been. But at least it's raining, and I'm happy about that.

    1. I don't mind the rain at normal levels, but we've had it torrential every night this week up to now, the garden has been battered. But, on the bright side I haven't had to do any watering. 😄

  5. Warming up in this part of the world. Although the rain cools us slightly, the humidity is something else! I will be making some croutons this week, too. From a loaf of French bread I bought on Friday. Also...what is brown sauce?

    1. Humidity is hard to cope with isn't it, dry heat is a bit easier.

Brown sauce is like a spicier, more umami version of tomato ketchup. When they ask Alan if he wants some when he buys a bacon bun, he always says yes, then very rarely actually uses it. I don't like it much so I wish he'd say yes to tomato ketchup instead, at least I use that occasionally. 😄

  6. We warmed up so much here on the Canadian Prairies that we were under a tornado watch for two days. Today has been lovely, but tomorrow more rain and a chance of another tornado watch.
Just wishing the weather would behave a bit.

    God bless.

  7. I was the same, I hated having to go to bed in daylight as a child!
Although this year is their fallow year and it isn't on, traditionally the weather the week before Glastonbury is usually awful, looking back at old blog posts there's one incidence of my wearing gloves! Last year I actually built our stall wearing a fake fur coat and a woolly hat! xxx

    1. After reading your post yesterday I was wondering how you were going to cope with Glastonbury, the fallow year has fell perfectly. 😀

  8. Heating clicked on here too a couple of mornings - I think it is warming up as the week goes on. The rain was useful for filling all the water butts and giving everywhere a good soak but it wasn't so good for the first day of Queens Club tennis (I know you'll be riveted to hear!)

  9. A Case for Slow Living, wonderful, you do post some inspirational verses Sue. Thank you, it was just what I needed to read, to remind myself that I am a lady of a certain age.🤣 June.

    1. I think we all forgot we are ladies of a certain age, which is sometimes a good thing ... if slightly tiring. 😁

  10. Do you remember the old child's poem by RL Stevenson, Bed in Summer?
In winter I get up at night,
And dress by yellow candle light.
In summer, quite the other way.
I have to go to bed by day . . . etc
(Funny how childhood poems stick in your memory - I can still recite the whole poem.)

  11. Revelling in slowness, how lovely. Yes, hasn’t it been chilly, normally courgettes grow like weeds but mine are so slow this year. I’m wrapping myself in a blanket to watch telly in the evening.

    1. Our courgette plants are growing well, but it's been too cold for the flowers to last long enough for the few bees that I've seen to pollinate them, so it's going to be a while until we get the first actual courgettes I think.

  12. Sue you are The Goddess of Thriftiness. I too hated being sent to bed in daylight, or indeed whenever I thought it was too early. On occasion I would kick up quite a stink. Makes me laugh now, such a brat.
