Yesterday morning I was watching WearyWolf's latest YouTube video about eating for 50p a day and of course it immediately brought back memories of me doing exactly the same thing back in April 2023 on my Challenge blog.
I just had to go back and have a look to see what I bought with my £3.50, I really couldn't remember at all. We did it so differently, and to be honest I think he did it so much better. I doubt he could have managed the week on my tiny portions compared to the really good ones that he made for himself.

I wonder how I would do it if I had to do it again. I briefly thought of having another go at the challenge ... and then talked myself out of it almost immediately. 😄
To read my version of the challenge just click HERE, and then as you get to the bottom of each post click on 'Newer Post' and you will go straight to the next days blog post.

Would be interesting not to do the chalenge again but compare like for like baskets cost wise two years on?
ReplyDeleteYes, I did that on this blog last year. I bet it's gone up even more since then though. 🫤

Would be an interesting basket to cost and track yearly
DeleteI may think about doing a basket of things that make up a regular weekly meal plan, that would be even more interesting. Thanks for the idea.
DeleteThink you are working too hard at the moment to be doing a challenge. Enjoy your tasty meals that you make using best use of what you buy. Save the challenge for next year in your new home. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI'm always tempted to do challenges again, but healthwise a lot would not be feasible these days unfortunately. 🫤
DeleteOnce again the cost of our online Tesco order made my eyes water.
ReplyDeleteAlways interesting to see how others manage their food budgets

It's shocking if you take your eyes off the totalling up amount for a few minutes isn't it.
DeleteU need to teach me please
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if we could all manage on this wouldn't it, but I'm afraid on a regular weekly basis it would be virtually impossible to keep in good health. It might be worth a go though if you were determined and planned very carefully. :-)
DeleteEven doing the exchange to Canadian funds I think I would be hard pressed to accomplish it.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I think so, Canadian prices are through the roof aren't they.
DeleteI enjoyed that one - I get a lot from Karl's videos. He's so clever and inventive around food and gives me such good ideas.
ReplyDeleteHe is a gentleman of the best kind. xx
He's such an all round great family man isn't he, and his allotments are looking brilliant.
DeleteThat would be a very difficult challenge to do over here, especially these days, unless one made a big pot of soup and had that for meals, every day.
ReplyDeleteThat is the best way to do it really, if you can live with the repetition. It works out cheaper to say have porridge for breakfast, a sandwich or something on toast for lunch, and then soup in the evening.
DeleteEven just a week eating such a limited diet would make me very ill - not even thinking about trying anything that limits fruit and veg now.
ReplyDeleteI think my version was quite good for vegetables, but the only fruit was tinned peaches. Another 50p could have seen me with 3 bananas for extra nutrition.
DeleteI must get our food bill down! There's just the 2 of us here plus pets. I buy things in case the family visit. I've nipped to Lidl today to claim 2 freebies of my choice - a box of their Deluxe king cherries- £6.99 but free and a tub of ice cream - £1.65 but used my points from their new system. I've decided to do my shop there every week. I usually go to Tesco but its getting ridiculous now. My local Lidl is a 10min drive. Tesco is 20 mins but a very busy road with queues.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people have been saying how expensive Tesco has gotten recently. It's been a long time since I shopped there, and if your Lidl is closer too, it makes a lot of sense to make the switch. 🙂
DeleteA well thought out video, and making use of the best prices, and ok in the short term. Affordable protein is the main problem with a low income. Some families I see have a trolley full of stuff with less nourishment.
ReplyDeleteHe did really well with his protein, much better than me. Chickpeas have 19g protein per every 100g, and most of his meals contained them. I don't like seeing family trollies full of packaged, processed foods, but each to their own I guess.
DeleteWe have a wide variety of stuff growing this year. We'll see what does the best, and go from there.
ReplyDeleteIt's good having all the home grown stuff available. I sometimes miss our (almost) self sufficient days, but I don't miss the hard work. 😄
