Lawn and Order

*

Lawn mowers were out in force this weekend, not at our house I hasten to add, we are most definitely a lawn free zone.  But it seemed that virtually all the neighbours were either cutting grass or power washing their patios.  Oh well, if they've all got their little plots done now, peace should reign supreme for the rest of the week.  😄

Over at the bungalow the plumber has now installed an indoor stop tap that will one day be hidden under the kitchen sink ...

... and an outdoor tap.

Which means that one day in the not too distant future, we will be able to annoy our neighbours with a jet washing session.  😁

    1. I used to really like it too, eventually I even got to like the UK version with Bradley Walsh.

  2. We too are a lawn free zone, surrounded by people with tiny patches that think they need huge petrol-powered mowers and strimmers. As a hedgehog lover I find the sound of a strimmer very stressful. The same people - often retired and with no need to carry out noisy mowing on a weekend - don't bother to check for hedgehogs when they bash into their long grass.
The outside tap looks lovely, no doubt there will be plenty of water butts too 😉
Our power washer is quite quiet, and our neighbours, deaf from their noisy mowers don't even notice it - plus we only use it 2 or 3 times a year.
It's definitely too hot for me.

    1. Strimmers are so dangerous for hedgehogs aren't they. :-(

There are going to be water butts at the 'working end' of the garden, hidden away at the back of the garage. We tend to use our power washer just once each year, mostly to get the green build up off the Indian stone we have here, it gets very slippery.

  3. I have never seen the point of power washing the brick drives. The neighbours spend many noisy hours doing them. The council had to unblock the drain which was full of sand.
We kept the front lawn for Daisy Dog, one of the last in the street now as the rest are car parks, and that takes just 10 minutes to cut with the battery mower.

    1. I don't think people realise that the sand has to go somewhere when brick drives are power washed. Alan was saying that there is a water permeable topping you can put on it, but we have virtually decided that the drive will be tarmac. Luckily even with parking for three or more cars available we will still have room for a small garden at the front, but there will be no grass.

  4. Oh the joy that a garden tap brings - no more lugging watering cans or even in days gone by hooking up a hose through a window to the kitchen sink tap. Washing windows & watering veg are yours to enjoy in the foreseeable future.
As an aside do you have space to install water tanks - rain water really is better for veg…..not being chemically treated like town water is

    1. Oh gosh I remember those days way back in the 80s/90s, I've been lucky enough to have an outside tap everywhere that I have lived since then.

We won't have tanks, but we will have a row of water butts to catch rainwater off the roofs. As you say it's so much better for the plants, especially vegetables.

  5. This bungalow was all grass when we moved in and now we still have a lawn and beautiful flower beds, but we have daisies and buttercups and the birds have given us cowslips... and gardeners have to have an outside tap!

    1. I would have loved a lovely lawn and flower beds, but unfortunately I am not up to maintaining them now, Alan would do it if asked but he doesn't really enjoy it.

Oh yes, we always have an outside tap, and usually a couple of power sockets too.

  6. Spent half an hour in the garden planting up some tubs and had to come indoors even though I had a large hat on. Cool drink and feet up until much later methinks. 24C here which is a hot as Minorca where my daughter is currently cooling herself in a lovely pool. Catriona

    1. It's been far too hot for me, any bits of gardening have been done first thing in the morning, and then I retire to the cool of the house for a lie down.

  7. That gave me a giggle. You can still watch Law & Order on Sky. In our new to us house we have an outside tap (a real boon ) and the developers also put in outside electric mains, very handy for our little Flymo. Garden thermometer is reading 100 degrees. TOO HOT! Xx

An outside tap was always useful, and now electrical outlets are vital for a modern garden aren't they. We've had both for many years so it was a no brainer to install them here, and a car charger too.

  8. I don't think I ever really notice who is mowing or washing in my little neck of the woods. I figure, get it done when the weather and your schedule align. I use my leaf blower and lawn mower and power washer during daylight hours only, and not every day. People have to accept a little noise if they live in a city, right?

    1. Oh yes, I am more than happy to accept the noise of day to day living from the neighbours. It was just comical that after a very peaceful hour on the patio everything started all around us at once. One neighbour mowing, one power washing and one assembling a new sunroom type building.

  9. I get the joke!

I've never understood the appeal of power washing. I would never even think to power wash our steps, but my upstairs neighbor used to do it every year. I'm glad he's moved!

    1. We have to do it at least once a year, otherwise the green bloom on our Indian stone paving stones gets very slippery when wet. We've both slipped on it in the past.

  12. Sorry I didn’t watch that so didn’t get the joke 😀
Hotter here today than yesterday, most of our neighbours seem to be staying indoors 😉
