How Many Times Do You Shop Each Month?

 26th - Sainsbury's £21.03

Whenever I share my shopping I get comments along the lines of 'I don't know how you manage on so little' or 'I have to spend a lot more' etc, and I've never really explained it well enough really.  So it's totally my fault.

I buy all the food that I need, and yes occasionally some of the food or treats that I just want or that  temptation leads me into buying, to top up what I already have in the house.  Most of you have seen my bulging cupboards and know all about my on/off stockpiling for a rainy day.  This year that has all been done with money that I have made selling things off while decluttering prior to our forthcoming move, and not always from my very limited food budget.  I've done well, and while I have been eating very well I have also built up quite a respectable stash of things that I need and will make good use of.  Every shopping trip has something that gets popped into the bottom cupboard, one day I just know it will all explode outwards with a flurry of assorted packages and tins littering my tiny kitchen floor, it really is that full.

I was definitely seduced by these lovely strawberries this week.  No sooner were they home than they were washed, trimmed and popped into the fridge for random snacking moments.

It's almost the law in the UK to have strawberries at the end of May and into June, then as soon as the lovely homegrown fresh flavour starts to diminish I rarely buy them anymore.

Some people eat the green tops too, while I can't stand to do that nothing gets wasted here, and they get added to the fruit scraps bag in the freezer ready for the next round of compost heap jelly.

Booths £8.35

Yesterday I had to call into Booths for some bread for Alan and while I was there I thought I would get some for myself too.  They had none of the sort I like, indeed the bread shelves were pretty spartan.  I guess everyone is either picnicking, barbequing, or simply living on sandwiches and buns.  I got myself some buns instead and will make do with those.

I can use the teacakes in the top photo instead of breakfast toast, they are already sliced in half and in the freezer waiting to be called upon.  As you can see I was tempted by a quiche, some of the bought ones tend to be a bit hit and miss, but these Higgidy vegan quiches are full of flavour and delicious hot or cold, we both like them so I will be sharing.

The fridge is looking very healthy going into the weekend, the quiche was still on the worktop when I took this photo.

Anyway, the title of this post is 'How Many Times Do You Shop Each Month?'

I went back and checked my own total after noting down what I had spent up to now this month, and I have shopped eight times in May. I spent a total of £99.37 all together, which averages out at a very respectable £25 for one person for a week.  Some of the cash from my limited housekeeping and some from a couple of small sales of household stuff.

Eight times seems excessive but we tend to stop at the supermarket on the way back from somewhere, or just pop out for a couple of things, and it's been a long time since either of us did a proper 'weekly shop'.  I find it so much easier to manage this way, and looking in a lot of the trollies in the supermarkets during the week, so do a lot of other people.

  1. 4 times at supermarkets for me in May. - I don't count car-boot finds as a shopping trip!
My heaps of shopping on yesterdays post looked like loads of shopping as someone said but so much of it went in the freezer - thank goodness for a chest freezer.
My spend for the month was £110 but 20+= batch made meals in the freezer as well as frozen fish and two different packs of veg burgers.
Hopefully someone at the boot sale tomorrow will have strawberries as yours look luscious and I've only had 4 off my plants :-(

    1. Freezers are so good at swallowing up masses of food for later and portioned out use aren't they. I need to go through mine and have a bit of an organise.

Strawberries are delicious at the moment. 🍓

    2. Twice a year I empty the freezer reorganize and .And a list of what's on each shelf so we don't lose food due to having so much in the freezer

  2. I shop weekly, but if there is anything I forgot I will pick it up locally. If Tam and Rosie are coming, I always have to get extra (wine, strawberries, sliced bread etc and things that Rosie WILL eat - v. fussy, would live on strawberries, and cheese on toast.

We shouldn't be getting Rosie strawberries at all - Tam said something about them being cumulative in the body (PFAS I think they are) - but we wash them well and she loves them so. I grow organic strawberries for Rosie, but not enough of them!!

My shopping includes an average of £15 - £18 a week on cat food - you have to buy sachets, now tins are no longer available - they went further of course, hence the sachets.

    1. I hadn't realised that tinned catfood, and according to my son tinned dog food too, has all but disappeared. It costs us £3 a day to feed Ginger, he's on the fancy little shapped pods now. Luckily Alan pays for this. 🐱

  3. Weekly supermarket deliveries, and top up as and when.

  4. The more I think and read about this the more I think those of us who do a ‘big’ shop every week instead of shopping according to need , probably spend quite a bit more.
The problem I have is that we live 9 miles from the nearest supermarket, nearest Aldi is approximately 45 minutes drive away 😕
This week when doing the Tesco online order I challenged myself to only buy what we absolutely couldn’t do without , I spent about £25 less than usual……..it’s a start.

    1. I don't think it's easy at all, or cost effective, to be nipping backwards and forwards when you live so far from the shops is it. We had that scenario when we lived in Wales. 🤔

    2. I do that esp in super Wal-Mart by looking in my cart and removing what I can do who until " next time"

  5. I average going to the store maybe once a week. Sometimes for a full order, sometimes one or two things to round out what I already have. There is more than enough food in this house, just sometimes not a lot of novelty and variety. I have been very good at not buying boxed wine, ice cream, or other treats. Yay, me?

  6. I do an online shop once a month and spend £40ish. I visit the little village shop every few days to buy bananas. I eat out most weeks either in the village pub or at a pensioners lunch.

  7. I shop every Friday. Sometimes I will have to make a mini shop on Monday for things I forgot. It's funny, because I follow the same routine my mom used.

  8. Like Alison in Devon, I'm thinking a weekly shop is not the most efficient. Since moving into town last year I have slid, without much thought, into a larger amount of non perishables purchased approx once a month and then buy the fresh stuff as needed. Once a detailed planner I'm loving this relaxed approach. It will be even more laid back when my subscription veggie box from a local farmer begins next week as you never know what you are getting.

    1. I think I'm developing a much more relaxed and laid back approach this past few weeks, it's good isn't it. Maybe it’s something to do with the sunshine, as well as escaping the rigidity of the past year for me. 🌞

  9. I don’t like shopping so do it as needed. Tonight we are having hot food as the temperature has dropped a bit today. I should have walked round to the shop and bought milk but I decided I could last one more day. Your fridge looks so well organised and agree about strawberries being delicious just now. Catriona

    1. I really like food shopping, I'm sure everyone in here has noticed. 😄 But the shop needs to be nice and quiet these days, so I'm an early morning shopper if I fancy a browse around.

  10. I shop once a week with a list at a fruit/veg place and Aldi.

  11. I am always amazed at how cheap it is in the UK. For one dog, two adults, and feeding one adult four suppers a week, I'm lucky to manage on $600/four weeks.

  12. It really depends on the number of weeks in the month. This means I usually shop every two weeks thought lately I have been trying to stretch that out one or two days. Now that the garden is in I probably will not be running out of produce so quickly.

    God bless.

  13. If you mean food shopping, I try to limit it to once a week although sometimes I run out before the week is up.
And yes, the strawberries are starting to taste like strawberries again, thank goodness. xx

    1. Yes, I meant food shopping, but also the things that get picked up at the supermarket. So tissues, toilet rolls, personal hygiene etc. 😀

  14. Too many is the answer - I live very close to two supermarkets so far too easy to 'pop in' and succumb to the yellow sticker bargains! I aim to do one main shop a week and one top up for two adults.

  15. I get groceries delivered 3 to 4 times a month. In May, I had two grocery deliveries and did one in-person shopping trip at a specialty store. My monthly grocery budget (food only) is $250 for two adults. Some months, I go over my budget and "borrow" from the next month's budget; other times, I carry over any extra money to the next month.

    1. That's a good way to do it. It means you can borrow from next month's budget and perhaps pick up some bargains or extras that will save you money in the long run. 😀

  16. We have Aldi, Sainsbury’s and M&S Food all together on the ring road just a mile away, and the other main supermarkets within 3 miles, so I compare prices and offers using the Trolley ap. I shop weekly, mainly at Aldi, for fresh foods and basic ingredients, and keep the pantry and freezer well stocked. I look out for any reduced price plain meat and fish, 30% or 50% off, to freeze in portions. DH buys extra milk once a week. We grow some fruit. We make our bread, cakes and kefir, marmalade and jams, and I cook from scratch. My budget for food for 2 pensioners is £5 a day.

  17. Usually, we get 3 or 4 home deliveries a month plus odd bits when we run out of anything. I do like to choose my own bananas and strawberries though. Strawberries must be British grown as I find others are just far too hard and tasteless, not to mention the airmiles!
£25 for a week is pretty good, well done :)

  18. Other than hobbling to the Tesco Express 300 yards from my house twice a week (for fresh milk/bread) I no longer shop in person due to illness. I now have grocery delivery once every 2-3 weeks, and a veg. box once a fortnight. I find it suits me as I can easily keep an eye on the running total and can go back and edit my basket. The main drawback is that I can't take advantage of any yellow stickers, but I am less likely to put a random item in the basket just because it appeals to me in the moment. I was talking to my friend the other day as she was enthusing about fresh strawberries but I'm not actually very keen on them. I much prefer raspberries - but then I'm the odd person whi prefers green peppers to the red or yellow ones.

  19. I shop about three times a week, I like things as fresh as possible. I always check what i have though so I can use up things when cooking the evening meal. My husband has a big appetite, I could probably live on a lot less and certainly not cook every night.

  20. I big shop once a week. And go again about every 10 days for a few more things that we've run low on or to buy sale items that are for longer storage ( canned goods, sugar, etc). I keep a list of 30 common items I buy all the time and every once in awhile write the prices by those items from 4 diff stores ( 3 are 2 miles from house Publix Kroger and aldi are all in two blocks of each other. and Wal-Mart is an extra mile). That way I know a bargain price. And I know which items are often buy one get one free.
