The Freebies I Got Last Month

At the end of every month on my Instagram account I used to share the freebies that I had managed to collect over the course of the month.  Now, while it is easy to scroll though photos and photos of napkins and sugar sachets on Insta it might be quite a different kettle of fish on my blog.

But here for posterity is last months collection of acquisitions.  All gathered legally and to save them going to landfill unwanted and unused.  I'll explain them all this month, to give you an idea of how I collect them.

For instance in the top photo - Alan chose a tomato ketchup sachet to go with his Booths bacon bun, but decided not to use it, he used one sachet of sugar instead of his usual two, and the napkins were leftovers, they always seem very generous giving you one each and at least one spare.

I have a Dobbie's card which entitles me to two free coffees per month, along with many other perks.  We nearly always manage to visit and pick up our freebies.  It was my Dad who introduced us to the wonderful art of enjoying outings in retirement and getting free coffees with membership cards.

Another day another Booths breakfast, this time for some reason Alan chose brown sauce when he was asked for his preference ... he rarely eats this, and I really don't like it.  I might use it to flavour a soup or a curry, or pass it on to my son who loves the stuff.  πŸ˜•

Napkins and a sugar sachet.

Another napkin and more sugar.

The white sugar was off someone else's tray, they left it behind when they went ... I'm getting a little bit braver at doing this.

I always bring home unused napkins, otherwise they are swept into the bin when the tables are cleared along with everything else.  Far better for them to be used at home and then thrown away than to not be used at all.

I have not had to buy any paper kitchen towel rolls since December of last year thanks to this new habit of mine.  I use my collection of rescued napkins for any messier jobs, and keep my one roll of kitchen paper for anything food related.

Two little sugars.

A single tomato ketchup sachet.

I only use tomato ketchup on sausage or 'bacon' butties, so having a couple of these in my little stash means I don't have a bottle of ketchup going off before it can all be used up.

Just a couple of napkins, but always worth bringing home.

I have the Greggs app on my phone and while we have been stopping at the motorway services at least twice a week for the past two years, it means that we have been able to enjoy quite a few free coffees and sausage rolls by gradually building up the required purchases in each category.  It's buy nine and get one free, so when there are two of you ... and occasionally three ... enjoying sausage rolls and coffee, this soon adds up.

This month I had a free sausage roll to enjoy, is it just me or do they taste even better when no money changes hands.  πŸ˜€

A couple more napkins for the stash.

Sugars and salt.

Alan had forgotten to ask for them when he bought us some coffees and chips at Booths one lunchtime, so he went back to rectify this.  They nearly always give you far more than you actually need when they hand them over this way.

Mayo and napkins, I never say no to mayo!!

This one seems excessive, but it was due to Alan telling me he was getting one thing and then getting another, and me being the one gathering the cutlery and condiments.

Nothing will go to waste though.

So these photos were usually to be found on my Instagram page, if you are interested in seeing what we get each month I can continue to share, but if not this is a good round up of what is usually added to my stash, and it can stay on my blog for posterity.

  1. I don't drink coffee, and wouldn't go out for tea - very rarely go out for a meal, only with family or when being taken out. You have a goodly stash there though.

    1. I can honestly say that if I wasn't with Alan I would virtually never go out for a meal. I rarely ate out until we met, he loves it and always has. I do go out for the occasional coffee on my own, but with the rising cost now I think even that would be a much rarer occurrence too.

  2. I enjoy seeing your freebies stash. In fact your rubbing off on me coz the other day I was in a cafe and I noticed the peeps next to me had left those little butters on their tray unopened obviously and my first thought was what a shame coz that'll be thrown away should I grab it lol but then I realised it'll prob just melt all over my bag so I didn't bother. I like hearing about how you get your freebies and how you use them. I was very impressed about not having to buy kitchen roll since December that's incredible. You've inspired me to try harder on saving resources and thinking about how we use them 😊

    1. I always carry little zip lock plastic bags in my bag for things like leftovers, lemon wedges ... or butter pats. While I don't use butter Alan does, and those little pats are perfect for him to cook a steak in, or just use on his toast at home.

    2. That's a good idea. I can't use it either but hubby can.

    1. Nancy Birtwistle's books are really good for hints and tips on eco tips for the home and garden as are Rhonda Hetzels. Nancy is also on Instagram and Rhonda's blog is still up even though she no longer writes it. https://down---to---earth.blogspot.com/

Apart from books and blogs most of my tips come from years of experience in having to make money stretch as far as possible.

  4. It's so annoying to live so far from a Dobbies! I'm halfway between Woodbridge and Bury St Edmunds. 40 mins to both!

    1. We are about 30 minutes from our nearest one, annoyingly there used to be the one that me and Mum went to every week, that one would have been a few minutes from her care home, but that was closed down this time last year. Alan will travel a long way for a free cup of coffee ... just like my Dad used to.

  5. Good habit. My problem is remembering to take everything out of my handbag again - its not good to find out that your purse is coated in sugar a few days later! In the summer I had a day out with my son (he's in his 20's); we treated ourselves to ice cream, which soon got rather messy in the hot sun, and he thought it was hilarious that I whipped out the napkins I'd put in my bag after lunch. Just as well I had though - we needed them!

    1. I try really hard to remember to take all the little bits I've rescued out of my bag as soon as I get home, but I have been known to forget and pull out my phone along with a shower of salt sachets!!

  6. I was planning a craft once with some children and wanted lots of little Tiptree jam pots. When we took some OAPs from a church group on an outing , I went round every table asking them for the pots from their cream tea! Complete strangers in the cafe contributed theirs too

    1. I just use the Quorn Vegan Ham Slices these days and gently fry them, but I used to like the 'This Isn't Bacon' bacon, but it was quite expensive.

  8. We were at a very posh Christmas dance many years ago and every place setting had a Christmas hat of the expensive kind, At the end of the night, most hats were unworn so I gathered all the ones from our table-about 20.when the young waiting staff realised what I was doing, they got a black bin bag and piled in as many as they could collect from the other tables. Our P1 and P2 pupils had the most splendid party hats ever for their school party which saved the school’s previous resources and the hats were enjoyed by little people who though they were the bees knees. 1. That is an absolute brilliant 'rescue', and I bet you were the only ones to leave the dance with a bin bag full of goodies.

    1. Hobby, obsession, hatred of things being wasted, it's all of them. I take after my Dad, but he used to take it to extraordinary levels that really got out of hand. I'm definitely careful about that. πŸ˜„

  10. We've started having coffee out more often. Only in local independent cafes, it's our tiny effort to help them survive. Neither of us have sugar or milk so there's hardly ever anything for us to collect. If we are lucky enough to be given a biscuit with our coffee it never goes to waste.

    1. It is nice to get a little biscuit with a cup of coffee isn't it. Sadly due to cost, it's not as regular an occurrence as it used to be. I either eat them there or bring them home, they're never wasted. πŸ™‚

  11. Members’ 2 free hot drinks a month each at Dobbies. I collect the used little jam jars too. A few sachets of brown sugar, to save them being wasted. Oh, and we got 71 pounds of apples from the hedgerow on the way home.

  12. I like to see the 'rescues' from your cafe visits. Years ago I popped an unused butter pat in my bag - wrapped of course - found it again weeks later πŸ™„πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚
Last week I was bemoaning the price of cooking apples to OH, where we used to live there was a tree in the village on public land, I often filled several carriers with windfalls, no one else bothered. Later that day, on FB ( does have some uses πŸ˜‰) there was a local lady who had a bumper crop, offering them for free to anyone who could come and pick them. We were off like a shot, beautiful apples, cookers and eaters, not a mark on them, they'll last us for months.

  15. I do bring the sugar home occasionally if my husband is with me but as i don't take sugar I never ask for it if i'm on my own. I've just discovered the Greggs app and had my free coffee for joining when i went to book club last week :-)

    1. I don't ask for sugar for myself, but it occasionally arrives on the saucer so I do keep it then. Alan seems to vary so much with his sugar consumption at the moment I think it's to do with how bitter the coffee is. If I'm picking up sugar I guess at two.

The Greggs app is proving really useful for us at the moment. They know what they are doing though, the free sweet treat I got for my birthday, got me hooked on glazed doughnuts. πŸ˜„

    1. Sadly the Dobbies near to Cheshire is the one me and Mum used to go to, and it closed down last year. The only Booths in Cheshire is in Knutsford, the Hale branch closed a while ago, much to my brother's dismay.
