Shrinkflation Strikes again

Shrinkflation has struck again.

The lovely vegan Aldi sausage rolls, were miraculously held at the same price of £1.19 for years.  They were tasty, they always cooked up really well, and were enjoyed by meat eaters and non-meat eaters for so long.

Then shock horror, a few months ago they vanished from the freezers.

I checked every single time we went in there, and while other things disappeared and then came back there was never a sighting of the sausage rolls either on the shelves or on any of the shelf edge labels.

Then on Friday look what I spotted, stacked high  filling a third of the top shelf of the freezer and being introduced as a new product ... sausage rolls.

But in a pack of two!!

Now that is a little bit sneaky if you ask me.  They are still really good value for money as sausage rolls go, and hopefully they will be as tasty as before.  I have opened the box and they do seem a little bit longer than they were previously and I will be trying them for flavour for lunch one day this week.

At least I guess this shrinkflation is blatantly obvious, there for all to see two instead of four.  But one of my favourite sausage rolls is now 50p instead of it's original 30p, and that is quite a jump.

Although I guess, in the grand scheme of things, it's not the end of the world. 😄

  1. it's happening with everything I am finding. Here in Canada in the Wal Mart we used to buy a six pack of bagels, then like you said with the sausage rolls they disappeared from the shelves, when they came back, there was only four in the pack, but at the same price as it was prior when there was six in a pack. Everything is rising in price......

    1. Things really are going up in price aren't they. I totally understand why it has to be, but it still comes as a bit of a shock when the rises are no longer in pennies but in much larger amounts.

  2. With your cooking skills, you could make and freeze some excellent chick pea, bean or lentil and vegetable pasties, individual pies, and pastry rolls, well within budget and made only with natural ingredients. There's a challenge.

    1. I really should have a making session and get a lot of homemade sausage rolls into the freezer, ready for 'emergency use'. :-)

  3. I looked at the packets; the old saus

    1. -Sausage rolls were 240 calories, the new ones 380, so they are definitely bigger... assuming the calories aren't from thicker pastry!

    2. I didn't have an old box to compare the contents in details, but the sausage rolls do seem a bit bigger overall, pastry and filling. It will be interesting to see how much they grow when they are baked. I guess with that many calories in each one it makes for two satisfying lunches ... with my usual dollop of mayo for dunking. :-)

  4. So cheeky, and if they were a good seller before why couldn't Aldi just leave well alone!
Hope you find them just as tasty as the old version.

    1. I guess they were a bit of a loss leader in the plant based freezer section for a long time, but now they have other very successful products. Fingers crossed that they are as good. :-)

  5. The same happened with a nut/cereal bar I like. Disappeared for months, and the replacement version is now three per box instead of four and they are 30g each instead of 40g.

But the shelves are generally full, no-one shoots at me in the grocery store carpark and I have the money to buy what I need. I shall hold my complaining until I find something that really warrants it 😂

    1. I think the only thing I'm complaining about really is the sneakiness. I understand totally that they have to charge a reasonable price for their products, and with raw material costs shooting up so much, as well as transportation etc it has to be done. But wouldn't it be nice if just now and then a supermarket put up a poster saying 'Sorry our costs have had to go up on X, Y and Z because of .... '. Now that would be refreshing!!

  6. BEG's comment made me laugh out loud! I used to love the Holland and Barrett veggie sausage rolls, mind you I've not had one for about 15 years, I remember them being so big I'd have to cut it in half and have the rest the following day. 50p's still a good price though, isn't it? I've never bought a Gregg's one but I bet they're more than that. xxx

    1. Yes, 50p is a brilliant price, and it still makes them a LOT cheaper than many of the other supermarkets offerings. Oh yes, Greggs are a lot dearer, especially at the services where we are currently getting them on our way home from Manchester, I think they are £1.65 ... but then they do cook them for me. :-)

  11. Long time reader, first time with a comment. This made me smile as the Iceland, 'No porkies' range recently did the same - from four standard rolls to two jumbo sized. I wonder if they are the same supplier? Unfortunately one wasn't enough so instead I ate both of them which was like eating three...oops!

    1. Ooh, I bet they are then. The same rolls in differently printed boxes, so many things are like that these days. I'll have to see if I can get hold of the 'No Porkies' to do a comparison. :-)

Thanks for the warning I will definitely only have one at a time. I used to just about manage two of the old version, but three ... now that would have been impossible!!

  12. There’s a school of thought doing the rounds here in Australia- don’t know if it’s the same elsewhere
Seemingly shoppers (population in general) will accept less for the same amount of cash than they will the same weight for a higher price.

At one time many years ag we were on a low income so I get into the habit of counting the number of biscuits (our one treat) to make sure there was an even number. I’m still ropable that one manufacturer cut a favourite down by one (11 in the pack not 12) for the same price I certainly wasn’t happy about that

    1. That made me think! I don't know which camp I am in at the moment, I think ... I would rather have an increase in price and the same number and size of product. But like you, years ago I absolutely HAD to have the same number of things in packs to make the feeding of my family possible. Any price rise or reduction in the number of items in a product meant that I went without.
