Blogmas Day Twenty Three - Charity Shop Purchases and Homemade Goodies

I called to two of my favourite charity shops while I was in town last week.  One day I was in town to visit the dentist and called to the Age Concern shop and the other I was in town with Alan and nipped into the local Children's Hospice shop.

In both I got a book and a little something that caught my eye.  It's Christmas time and it's a nice way to support any charity, something for me, something for them and a 'please put the change in the donation pot'.

I definitely felt more charitable towards them than the dentist did towards me!!

At home after putting away the new shopping that I showed on yesterday's post, I used the last of my old bananas to make a batch of Banana and Walnut cakes.  Half each for me and Alan and nothing gone to waste.

To make a bit of space in the freezer I also took out all the lemon ends and apple cores and made a little batch of Compost Heap Jelly.  Two of the little jars were then labelled ready to go into Alan's stocking.

 A bit of charity, a bit of frugality and a lot of satisfaction.

  1. Charity shops are a great way to make donations. Our donations generally go in the back door to help restock the shop!

    1. My donations of actual stuff go in through the front door, and as they are all gift aided I get a statement each year of what they have made from the sales. It's very satisfying to see the total once a year. :-)

  2. It's my one of my favourite ways to shop :-}
    Is that lovely sauce boat 'Alfred Meakin' by any chance?

    1. Definitely, it's a good way to shop. No, it's Crown Ducal, but I didn't even look at the mark until I was at home. I bought it for the lovely floral spray design and the shape.

  3. A pretty little jug. I can picture it with brandy sauce for the Christmas pudding. I found a blue and white Spode Christmas plate for £1. We gift aid donations to the hospice shop, it was simple to do, and now I just have to show my C.S. card number.

    1. Yes, all my donations are gift aided too, it makes a huge difference to the charity to be able to claim an extra 25% back from nasty Mr Taxman.

  4. I love the little glass dish and it would look lovely filled with some colourfully wrapped sweets. Great buys from both shops. Catriona

    1. It's currently got some salted cashews in it, I think the contents will vary from day to day. :-)

  6. I visited the charity shop yesterday whilst we were in town and picked up my husband a shirt to go with his Christmas presents! I bought a couple of items last week as well to go in people's presents too! One of the shops had amazing handmade decorations which I bought for family! The compost jelly is a great present!

    1. It's nice to support charities with Christmas shopping isn't it. Oh, he loves his compost jelly, and he's almost finished the last jar and has been dropping hints. He's also just asked me to order him some soaps and toothpastes ... I don't need to, as he will see when he unwraps the things in his stocking. :-)
