I have been slowly and surely eating my way through the freezer drawers over quite a long time now, but have I been making space for Christmas food?
If I have I've failed miserably!! No matter how much headway I make I quickly fill the gaps with random leftovers that I just do not want to go to waste.
There are some gaps, although looking at these photos you wouldn't think so. I have been trying to eat the odds and sods that were in boxes taking up more room than they should have been, and that has been going well ... with some interesting results.
Three hash browns for breakfast must have been my most random meal, and one that I lived to regret. All day long no matter what else I ate or drank I could still taste them. It's put me off buying any more that's for sure. Maybe I should have had them as part of a meal instead of the whole meal!!
But I did manage to throw away the box. 😄
I've done so much better at using up the things that are in the food cupboard.
Seen here from both sides of the dividing bar, as I can't step back enough to get a straight on shot. There is so much more of the wood visible now than there was in my last photo taken in June of this year.
This was how it looked in June of this year when I sorted out the 2025 foods and those that were out of date. I'm happy that some of the oldest foods have now been used and nothing has been wasted, but I guess I could have done a bit better.
Ah well, my not so little stash has kept me going nicely this year through my tiny pension payment months. There are only five months until my State Pension now, or as Alan insists on calling his 'my old age pension'.
But have I made space for Christmas food ? The answer really is no. But then I don't have much to buy, and what I have already will fit easily into the new spaces in the cupboard. I have two boxes of mini mince pies, and one of some teeny tiny fairy cakes to take to Mum's on Christmas Day. I have cheeses in the fridge and chutney in the cupboard, along with the little silverskin pickles and jar of beetroot that are visible on the bottom shelf. I have stuffing in the jar on the top shelf and Linda McCartney sausages in the freezer, so for my 'main item' I will make a sausage and stuffing Wellington or plait.
To compliment all that I will hopefully, be able to pick up some of the cheap supermarket vegetables to complete my Christmas lunch. Alan has ordered his main item from Booths, I don't know what his final choice was as he kept changing his mind, he's also ordered a couple of dairy-free 'cheesecake style' mini desserts for us both to have.
So that's it, we are pretty much sorted.
Sue xx
We rarely have left over food, but when we do we usually eat it the next day.. however our little pantry is well stocked as we usually buy as we eat stuff so the shelves are always full!
ReplyDeleteWith me just cooking for one I always tend to make at least two portions. If I don't fancy the same again the next day, the second portion goes in the freezer. 😀
DeleteI'm constantly trying to eat down the freezer then my husband spots a yellow sticker bargain and it fills up again. 😀 Maeve x
ReplyDeleteIt's like being on a roundabout trying to eat your way through a freezer isn't it. 😄
DeleteIn the autumn, my cousin helped me prepare loads ofthe apples and pears for the freezer. It took all day.And now i discover the labels we used have all come unstuck and fallen off! But I have made some freezer space by rearranging carefully...
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, that's not good. I just write directly onto everything with black marker pen these days. BUT, I forgot with two tubs and thawed them out thinking they were potato soup ... they were stewed apple. 😄
DeleteI am far too weak willed at this time of the year. Not for Christmas food but for the bargains to be had regarding meat, salmon, cheeses and of course the veggies.
ReplyDeleteI portion things up and freeze them for use later.
I am conflicted though because there isn't any "bargain food" really, is there? Someone, usually farmers aren't getting paid enough.
I am more and more going off meat though. I'm finding it a bit harder to digest.
My husband is a hard core carnivore.
We are having ribbolitta for tea tonight. There will be a lot of face pulling. 😂😂
The bargains are pretty irresistible aren't they. But I have to admit, that maybe for the first ever, I have been really good and fought the urge to buy too many extras. I've not eaten meat for such a long time now, I did Veganuary in 2017 and stayed vegan for a long time. I will be doing it again in this January.
DeleteI know what you mean about those boxes. And if you take things out of boxes and into a labelled poly bag, they fall down to the bottom and out of sight/mind. Having not gone big shop shopping for a couple of weeks really has created some freezer spaces. Now I just need to carry on! xx
ReplyDeleteExactly, I found a solitary garlic Kyiv in a bag on it's own tucked away ... a nice tasty surprise. :-)
DeleteSounds like you will have plenty of space for your Christmas food. I just put in a huge grocery order to be picked up later in the day. Some of the items are for the almsgiving that will take place on Saturday, some are for the pancake/waffles breakfast my daughter will be hosting for a few of her friends on Sunday, and the rest will be for us for the rest of the year. We generally don't buy any special food for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have a few treats, but we don't really need to go overboard do we. :-)
DeleteI have been tidying our freezer as Norrie tends to locate stuff wherever there is a space! I need to do a top up shop of veg etc but need to wipe out the fridge first. Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt will be nice to stock up on some vegetables, I have run the fridge right down to just two onions, a pack of beetroot, four carrots and two potatoes.
DeleteEverything in good order, nicely satisfying. I finally got my pension 3 years ago. I call it my pleasure pension as it does enable me to buy extra things when I want them. Or if not I can save a bit and tuck it away for trips out.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to getting mine, the full State pension will seem like riches after getting less than £80 a month for the previous year. :-)
DeleteI had been trying to make space for Christmas supermarket meat and fish offers, by using up what I had, especially the bulky frozen vegetables. There are often yellow stickered bargains to be had, one year I did well with cheeses and made a lot of butter to freeze from cream at 2p a pot.
ReplyDeleteI was glad of the space last week when I had the offer of some local venison.
There are nearly always really good offers on at this time of year if you shop at the right times aren't there. Oh gosh cream at 2p a pot, I bet you were ecstatic. :-)
DeleteSo neat and tidy! As usual we're hosting the Dead Relatives Society dinner on 25th December and haven't even thought about what to cook (or buy) - it might end up as crisps and beer! xxx
ReplyDeleteI like to keep the cupboard and the fridge nice and tidy, I get so annoyed if I have to rootle around to find things. Crisps and beer sound like a fun night, add in some slices of pizza and I would be round in a shot. :-)
DeleteI'm struggling to make room in the fridge. I keep spotting things I need for Boxing Day with a long date on them eg cream so bought it in case we miss out in the last delivery next week. I will need room for a trifle in there! At least I got some 15p veg today: 2 x bags potatoes, carrots, sprouts, parsnips and a swede. Some were for us and some for our daughter. At least Christmas dinner is sorted !
ReplyDeleteAngie
My fridge is pretty empty to be honest, so if Alan needs to borrow a bit space he will be able to. He always buys himself a big trifle for Christmas, and somehow he manages to eat the lot over one or two days. :-)
DeleteLike you it seems that as quickly as I make a space, I fill it with another leftover. This year I did not purchase pickled onions or olives we will make do with the pickles I have made over the year. Hopefully that will clear out even more room. The only cheese we will be using is the cheddar I bought a couple of shopping trips ago. Once again hopefully clearing things out even more. I am taking crackers and hot pepper jelly poured over cream cheese to share with family at our small get together and perhaps some baking, but that depends on how much our sons eat of the baking.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Ooh, hot pepper jelly poured over cream cheese sounds lovely. Cheddar was always my favourite cheese, luckily there are now some good dairy-free versions of it that I can eat in small quantities. :-)
